  1. Let's say the Cubs could trade Dempster during the offseason- proven closer tag making him valuable to someone- for a better RF? Would you want Wuertz as closer or Marmol?
  2. Only having 7 more home games should elimiante some of the day game after a night game problems which likely prompted the day of rest. The bad part of that being that it means Kendall starts almost every game the rest of the way. I'd rather see Soto up there, especially against the Sept. call-ups that he destroyed in AAA.
  3. I see Soto as the starter and Blanco as the back up. That's what I'd like to see, but the Cubs are stupid so I'm assuming they won't give Soto a chance to start. I hear ya. But I still believe money will be the deciding factor and Soto is the cheapest option. So it depends on how much Kendall wants. Considering that Soto can also play some 1st base and actually can hit, it would not shock me to see the Cubs go with 3 catchers to start the season with the idea that they can probably move Blanco or demote Soto if they have to. It's not an ideal sitaution but the Cubs, as we've all seen, have done dumber things.
  4. Not in the slightest. Some fans are patient enough that they could tolerate a decent season falling short of the playoffs if it meant a philosophical turn around that led to the team being a perennial pennant contender in the future. Some people have a more macro-minded view than others. Let's say the Cubs miss the playoffs. Which is more likely to be the response from Hendry: "We need to change our philosophy and get better hitters especially in the outfield" or "That's what happens when you rely on young players in a pennant race" or "If Soriano hadn't gotten injured...."
  5. Hendry's fate will already be sealed before most people begin to appreciate the damage he's done. The only way Hendry can save his job is for the Cubs to reach the WS either this or next year.
  6. If the Cubs make the playoffs and lose, isn't there a very good chance that the management will take a "What do we have to do to make it over the hump?" approach? That seems more likely than saying "We were good enough but we were unlucky, cursed, hurt or whatever other excuses they usually roll out. I'm a little surprised no one has pointed this out but the Cards winning last year has no bearing whatsoever on what happens this year.
  7. I see Soto as the starter and Blanco as the back up. Hendry would probably rather keep Kendall but can't afford him so he'll be forced to go cheap at catcher. This will give him more flexibility to make a move in the OF if Pie flops next season.
  8. I've noticed. At least, it seems pretty obvious it's the same kid. I once pointed out how I never see him add any respectable discussion whatsoever to any conversation and he just went off telling me how he knows everything there is to know about baseball and shows it in all his posts. I said, again, I haven't seen it -- then he linked me to something like 3 posts in the last maybe 2 years in which he'd have one semi-reasonable baseball post followed by a dozen more of the asinine immaturity. Impressive, eh? and yet people continue to react to him exactly the way he wants them to It's the age old dilemna: scorn or pity? Back on topic Carlos Zambrano is singlehandedly sucking all the joy out of this season. The playoff roster is pretty much what it was on 8/31 minus perhaps one player. If the Cubs do outlast the Cards and Brewers there is a good chance that Steve Trachsel will be the game 3 starter in the opening round of the playoffs. That to me speaks volumes about the Cubs' chances.
  9. Ohman seems like the type of guy that rubs people the wrong way and that a lot of people don't get his humor. He's kind of like a mime. Mimes think that they're entertaining people but really they're creepy and annoying.
  10. fixed for purposes of removing unecessary hyperbole.
  11. Hmmm .... crude, but effective !! Why wait until the last game against them to do this?
  12. The timing makes me think it would, assuming that they have someone they can demote for 2 days.
  13. Let me be the first to say that Monroe is unlikely to be worth Rapada. (or 3rd) Was Coats on the 40 man roster? I know Rapada was.
  14. If the Cubs hadn't wasted 2.5 million on Blanco they wouldn't think twice about keeping Prior. Wood is a tougher case since he's unlikely to ever return to the rotation. If Hendry is still around he'll keep both since he'd look even worse if either or both were effective somewhere else. In the words of Joe Morgan, I don't know what the new GM will do because I haven't seen him GM yet.
  15. Corey Patterson was a bust therefore will never amount to anything.
  16. Most GMs take over and the first task is to clean up the last guys mess. The 2008 Cubs aren't that big of a mess. In fact they have fewer holes to fill now than any other time during the Hendry regime. In an odd kind of way Hendry could wind up being better off by getting fired now while the team is still in moderately good shape. If the Cubs do anything in 2008, BBTN types will give him share of the credit. Then when his bad contracts start to look really terrible in 3 years he will already have been hired by the Orioles.
  17. I don't disagree with any of this but filling out the bench has been one of Hendry's biggest weaknesses.
  18. it's important to note that when hendry finally got the chance to go after the Top FA, he gave an 8 year contract to a guy who is OPSing 847 as a 31 year old. EDIT: OPSing 847 as a 31 year old and very much meeting expectations, i should add. OPSing .847 while playing left field -- the easiest position to fill and the one with the highest offensive expectations. Not that I'm defending the Soriano signing but when was the last time the Cubs had a LF that put together back to back seasons of .900 ops or better?
  19. somehow this sounds familiar. I'm sure Hendry will set Listach straight. "We want guys that swing the bat"
  20. But what is his upside? A dominant set up man? A reliable closer? Wood walks too many hitters to really be either of those. Unless there's a chance he can return to the rotation I just don't see Wood being worth more than 2 million per.
  21. Why would any business minded person keep Hendry? He wastes too much money on the Henry Blancos of the world for replacement level production. This is like an office manager paying $5 for a bic pen. It's foolishly wasteful.
  22. So if Prior is on schedule and everything with rehab goes well, when could he start pitching again? I don't see anyone giving him a 5 year contract- at least not right away. I could see him getting a 2 year deal with vesting options and the possibility of making that kind of money based on health. Or getting a straight 2 year deal and then parlaying on the field success into a long term contract the way Carpenter did with the Cards.
  23. Thanks for the cool breeze. It was most cooling on my mustache. Please, cool me again.
  24. Why trade for a veteran long reliever now? In another week the Cubs can call up Gallagher, Cherry, Ohman, Cotts, Petrick, Rapada and possibly Mateo. If they're putting in a long reliever, that means the game is already won or lost. If the Cubs are already down 4 runs, how much worse can putting Petrick in be than Silva? Also, why not just use Kerry Wood in that role?
