  1. Lost in all of the drama of last night's game was the heroics of the youngster. I loved it when he got that hit to give the Cubs the lead and pumped his fist. And then when he caught the lined drive off of Kent's bat to end the game did you see how pumped up he was? I love this kid's fire.
  2. Seems somewhat reasonable as Lee was flying back to Chicago either last night or today and then having the MRI done on his wrist which will be much more conclusive and should indicate whether there was any ligament damage
  3. There are a few things that have to happen for the Cubs to stay competitive if DLee is out for an extended period of time: 1. Pitching, as someone mentioned earlier, will be the biggest key because this lineup will be offensively challenged. 2. Not only does Aramis have to step his game up, but more importantly they have to start getting production out of Jones. If they want to give Aramis some protection they will probalby have to bat Walker behind him. 3. They have to play error free ball. No more mental mistakes (trying to pick the pitcher off and balking, or throwing it away) and although physical errors will occur they have got to limit them, Cedeno in particular.
  4. Amen brother. I am seeing quite a few balls off of his bat.
  5. I am taking my best friend from High School, well since elementary school, to Wrigley for his first game. He is a die hard Brewer fan so should be an interesting day. We haven't seen either too much over the last 10 years so I hope the Cubs win, otherwise i will never hear the end of it. "Remember when we went to Wrigley and Brewers......". The thing that has me worried is Glendon "Cy" Rusch is the probable starter for that game.
  6. I think the situation will dictate whether they pitch to him or not. Bases empty, pitch to him. Runners on with first base open, walk him. Etc.......
  7. Those guns aren't the most accurate, anywhere for +/- 5mph I believe.
  8. The funny thing about Maddux is that he is a completely different type of pitcher. Maddux doesn't really blow anyone away with his stuff. He's just a great "pitcher". Maddux pitched to contact, didn't try to strike people out, just put the ball in the exact location, most of the time, to get the other person out. That is something I just find totally amazing.
  9. I don't agree with the part about Pedro. Neither Maddux or Clemens was as good as Pedro was in their prime. I'd probably go: 1. Clemens 2A. Maddux 2B. Pedro 4. Unit Don't misunderstand me, I think Pedro is great and "stuff" wise he may be better than all of them, that's why I prefaced my remarks by saying "for their body of work". I don't think Pedro will aproach anywhere near the amount of wins or the longevity of any of the guys I mentioned. His durability, when compared to them also comes into play. edit: I know, I know, wins are more of a team stat, but I think over the course of a career they can be used to compare to some degree.
  10. For their body of work I would go with Clemens. But Maddux would be extremely close behind I mean really close. Although he has less Cy Young awards I think you need to factor in that he has 15 Gold Gloves. I think Pedro would be a very distant third and if you include Randy Johnson, a very distant 4th. Pedro isn't as durable or efficient as either Clemens or Maddux.
  11. There are a lot of factors that will go into it. How will Wade Miller look when he gets back? Are they going to keep Wood? Is Guzman Healthy? Can Prior avoid another freak accident/injury? How well did guys like Marshall, Hill, Ryu etc.. pitch at Iowa? are they ready? Just to early to tell.
  12. Unless we miraculously sign Roger Clemens or something like that.
  13. Me either. Are they underrated, or are they overrated? And doesn't walking guys have something to do with "how you pitch to the lineup"? I think he was trying to say that some overrate and some underrate them and he just thinks they are what they are, depends on the situation.
  14. First it was the last week of April, then it was first week of May, now its speculated to be the second week of May. Slowly the time table goes further and further away. Makes me wonder if, even with the knee setback, he could have been ready much earlier if he wasn't pitching in a futile attempt to finish .500 last year. I don't recall the Cubs putting any kind of timeline on his return, in fact didnt' they make a point of not doing that. I think any timelines have just been speculation by the media.
  15. It was the first time in a long time I'd sat down and watched a full game Scully worked. It was truly a joy. He's amazing. What's really impressive is that he does it all by himself....and if you weren't specifically listening to hear a 2nd guy you'd never miss him. I had two favorite lines he had last night. "Maddux is like a diamond cutter, every pitch is so precise" And... "Furcal reaches out to bunt and leaves that one in Barrett's glove" He's just damn good. Yeah, I love the fact he is in the booth by himself. You don't get any of that inane chatter that you are bound to get with a two man booth
  16. What are the odds, if he continues to have a good season, that he would want to stay in Chicago and play for a "reasonable contract". A hometown discount if you will.
  17. Im not even talking about the rest of the season, or his previous two games. Just last night by itself was just an awesome game to watch.
  18. I was going to start a new thread on this, I can't believe there is only one post on this subject, outside of the game thread. Kudos to Maddux, it was such a pleasure to watch him pitch last night. It was also great to hear Vin Scully call the game and listen to the accolades he heaped on Maddux also.
  19. At the time there was serious concern about when Brian Roberts would be available to play. Baltimore's interest in Walker would have been as a temporary fill-in for Roberst, and then as a player who could fill in at 2B, 1B, DH, and the OF in a pinch. -Banghart That is true and I know there were rumors out there about the trade, but I don't think Hendry really ever considered it. At least I would hope so.
  20. The subject of why he was on the tradeblock has been widely discussed in these forums for the last few months. The Cubs wanted to improve defensively up the middle and with Walker's production and his very attractive contract, Hendry thought he would be a valuable trading chip. Hendry wasn't going to let Walker go for nothing though, I am glad he held onto him, and I was wrong when I said I thought he would be traded before opening day. One of the rumors had him going to Baltimore for Matos who is hitting about .180. As the old cliche goes: "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make." Exactly that, it was just a rumor. I don't think Hendry could have seriously even considered makiing that trade. And why would Baltimore even want Walker? Where would he have played?
  21. Looking forward to watching the game tonight. I always enjoy listening to Vin Scully call the game. Takes me back to my childhood when he used to do the game of the week.

  23. Shouldn't that have an opposite effect? Hitting in front of the pitcher, wouldn't they occasionally unintentionally/intentionally walk the guy? But with guys on base in front of you, which Murton has been on base quite a bit lately. Your approach at the plate will change, you will be more aggresive and try to knock the run in with the pitcher coming up to bat.
  24. If your talking about Pie replacing anyone in the outfield, it would appear that Pierre would be the one he will replace as he will be a free agent after the season and I didn't hear the Cubs make any effort to extend him this spring.
  25. The staff may look something like this: Z Maddux Wood Prior Miller Dempster Howry Eyre Williamson Ohman Rusch I think the rest still have options and can be sent down. This configuration is under the assumption everyone remains healthy. If everyone remains healthy, I think Hendry will have some very valuable trading chips come the deadline.
