  1. This is Dusty. A normal person would catch on when they started giving the Barry Bonds treatment to Lee whenever he came up. Dusty Baker will catch on MAYBE the last week of Sept. after the Cubs are out of the race.
  2. Dempster time in the 9th. Come on, guys. Pull this one out and get Z the much-deserved win.
  3. I'd give Z the ball with Dempster warming up. If one guy gets on base, Dempster comes in.
  4. Z's got that dark skin, so he's better in the heat than a white boy. /Dusty.
  5. Neifi Perez= Rey Ordonez. Good glove, no hits, shouldn't be on an MLB roster, both were hit 2nd in the lineup by Dusty Baker.
  6. Ok, who's betting on a DP here? It would be typical Cubs.
  7. You're asking Dusty to call for a hit-and-run? About as much chance of me winning the Powerball lottery, and I haven't bought a ticket.
  8. Neifi can get the job done, dude. You need a vet like that down the stretch, man. He can hit, dude, just gotta let him work out the slump.
  9. Not yet, no. Well, tell me when they do, please. My guess is Addie Joss, a Wisconsin boy.
  10. So what was the answer to that trivia Q, about the HOF'er with the shortest career? I guessed Addie Joss. Have they given the answer yet?
  11. If you aren't under contract you could just sit out a year or play in Japan. If you are under contract you could retire, then stage a comeback a year later. No one is forcing these guys to play, they can walk away from the game anytime they want. Uh, I think you may have missed Swordsman's point.
  12. You assume Nomar is back next year? Or you are talking strictly about the remainder of this season? I think Nomar would be back. Dump Neifi so Dusty can't misuse him anymore, sign Nomar to another incentive-laden deal, and have Cedeno back him up. Nomar even said he wants to be back.
  13. How about giving Murton a chance before giving up on him. Just because he's not a "5-tool" prospect doesn't mean he can't play at a big-league level. He's done nothing but hit since he's been up here, and I wait to see how he adjusts once the pitchers find a weakness, but back off for now. Corey Patterson is a "5-tool" player and look how much good it's done him. I really don't care if he isn't fast or if he has average D. All he has to do is hit and walk, and not be a total butcher in left and he's welcome on this team.
  14. You know, I never thought of that, but that's a hell of a good question.
  15. Ya, Tim Kurkjan on FOXSPORTS radio said something today about another big fish is going to fry. Why would Kurkjan be on FOXSPORTS radio when he's an ESPN employee?
  16. So who you going to bench for Murton?? Lawton or Burnitz?? I highly doubt Prior, Maddux and Z will appreciate either Burnitz or Lawton butchering plays in cf. A team that fields a subpar defense deserves to fail. But I think some people favor defense at the expense of the offense.
  17. Exactly. I don't follow the logic. He wasn't hitting MLB pitching, so you send him down to AAA. He's not hitting AAA so then you bring him back up? :-s
  18. Well, assuming he isn't a 100% complete wreck, I'd rather have CPatt in CF than Hairston if Lawton is going to be manning LF. The beauty is we don't have to force Corey into a role in which he doesn't belong (top of the order)... Plus, not that it's a huge deal, but Corey is a far better CF than Hairston. I could live with Corey in the 7th spot or so... Lawton, Walker, Lee, Ramirez, Burnitz, Nomar, Patterson, Barrett (or something similar) isn't too bad... It's not as nice as some of the Manny and Dunn fantasy lineups.. but oh, well. But if you give me a good hitter with average defense and an average hitter with good defense, I'll take the good hitter 9 times out of 10.
  19. Yes. Smith was the greatest defensive player this game has ever known But was his defense good enough to make a Devi Cruz-esque hitter a HOF'er? Big whoop. Am I taking anything away from his D? No. He was awesome. But he's only getting in on a small part of his game. All things considered, if a guy is a phenomenal hitter and a lousy fielder over the course of his career, he should be HOF bound (like Manny Ramirez). But if he's a phenominal fielder and a lousy hitter (or average hitter), he shouldn't be in. Period. End of story.
  20. Aww dammit, I missed it. What was the question and what was Ryno's response?
  21. I think we have far too many "ifs" right now to make a run. We need too many things to come together and too many guys to pull thier heads out of their rectal orifices. But, IF we can pull those things together, this team can scare people and can make a lot of noise.
  22. For what it's worth Stone this morning on the score said he was to come up soon. when he is back do you think he gets the same type of ovation that manny got when he finally played? I hope he gets a standing ovation, the kid has been through alot and I hope we show him that we appreciate his efforts... I would like to see that too. It's not like he wasn't trying to do his best. I'd love to see him come back and feel welcome. I'll be cheering for him when he gets back, but he'll have to prove to me he can get the job done before I have faith in him again.
  23. Ozzie is in because he is the best defensive shortstop ever. Defense is only part of the game, though, and a smaller part than offense. Ozzie was an average to below average hitter for most of his career. The ONLY reason he's in is because of his glove.
  24. FWIW the "reject" Borowski they signed when the Cubs released him since then has pitched better than anyone in the Cubs bullpen except possibly Dempster. Borowski has not given up a run yet in 10 appearances. The walls will probably come crashing in on him soon, but at this point it looks like the Cubs should have released Remlinger instead of Borowski. Borowski's velocity wasn't where it needed to be and he was leaving the ball up in the zone. He was getting hammered. DFA'ing him was the right thing to do. It's nice to see him doing well in TB, but I'm not sure he would be real successful pitching in any meaningful games. But the thing is... how come whatever he found in Tampa almost immediately after he got there, he couldn't find here?
  25. I'd much rather have medium power--20+ HRs--from 6 to 8 positions than big power from a couple. I mean, Sammy used to carry the team for weeks at a time, but once he cooled off, or got injured, there was nothing. Spread the risk out a little. In fact, my perfect team would have 1 to 8 high OBP, .450 sluggers. Murton has a lot more value to me than sitting him and spending a lot for a banger. That works for me. I'd be quite happy with a team like that.
