  1. Dear Lord is this team horrible. Like 2002 horrible.
  2. Or its the fact that at one point around here the moderators actually kept discussions on topic (which they still do to a point) and actually did something about personal attacks (instead of participating in them). At some point that stopped, good threads turned into flamewars, and the posters who actually made the biggest and best contributions to this site left and it's been downhill since. This used to be a site for intelligent baseball discussion-- and on a lesser level still is. Now it's more a clique-y group of immature idiots flaming everyone they don't like *cough* and dragging discussions down to their level. However, being the stubborn fool I am, I'm going to be around forever.
  3. The NFL would have to miss way more than a full seasons worth of games before it makes any dent. It may even take more than that. I think if they lost an entire season they would no longer would be number 1. What's the #2 sport right now? Because that one would become number one.
  4. I thought the whole thing was pretty cool. It's getting to be crunch time, though, and I hope a resolution is agreed upon ASAP. I think the idea of an 18-game season is pretty much dead. That won't be happening. Right now I don't care what gets done, so long as it doesn't cut into the season. The NFL should take a look at what happened to baseball after the '94 strike. That's really when the NFL grabbed the huge audience it has now, because people were so pissed at baseball for the stoppage of play during the season. The NFL will kill the golden goose if it misses any games. Those fans will go elsewhere and might not ever fully come back.
  5. NSBB certainly has changed over time since I've been here (nearly 7 years, holy crap) in both good ways and bad.
  6. Not saying that the franchise is in trouble.. but you DO realize that we're talking about the Cubs, right?
  7. Shaq always seemed like he would have been an awesome guy to hang out with for an evening.
  8. I would have enjoyed seeing him get blamed. I wouldn't. I guess I just don't see the ill will people have towards Ryno now for this.
  9. If the Cubs are worth seeing the weather is of zero importance to me as a fan.
  10. Don't these kids get paid enough with the full-ride scholarships that they get? And now you want to pay them on top of that?
  11. The fanbase is getting itchy. They got a taste of winning, and I don't think they're content with "same old Cubs" anymore. They want a championship, and I don't think the Cubs will draw 3 million a year anymore with a piss-poor product on the field.
  12. Meh. Everyone is injured and Marmol got beaten like Brett Myers' wife. It's hard to get excited right now. Oh, and Brett Myers beats his wife.
  13. 1993 - Rick Wilkins Personally, I don't care which side of the plate a guy is hitting 30 HRs from, I just care that he does it. Man, talk about a flash in the pan. I remember going nuts over him because of that year. Holy one-year wonder, Batman! Did he ever turn out to be a disappointment.
  14. The university probably gave him an ultimatum: quit or be fired. He wasn't going to be back after this much [expletive] hit the fan.
  15. I want to say that collisions at the plate aren't allowed at any other level (i.e. college and below), in which case I don't think it would be hard to weed out. I can't remember seeing it at any UCD games I covered in the past (though that doesn't mean it didn't happen) and I remember seeing a guy blow up a catcher in high school and he was ejected immediately. So if it is outlawed at all other levels, it means that guys aren't taught to drill the catcher until the pro ranks and it seems like it would be easy to just not teach them to do it. Are catchers allowed to block the plate without the ball at those levels?
  16. I agree with this. Scoring was clearly secondary in his mind to obliterating Posey. That's what I'm talking about, when the runner becomes more concerned with destroying the catcher than getting to the plate. It doesn't happen often, but you see it from time to time. Actually it would be more accurate to say that the guy was trying to score, and thought his best chance of doing so was to jar the ball loose (versus beating the tag). If he is successful in jarring the ball loose, then at that point he ought to have plenty of time to get back and touch the plate. So in a sense you're right that he wasn't focused on getting to the plate as quickly as possible, but he was still focused on scoring. If that makes any sense. I have no problem if someone wants to argue the rules should be changed, but the runner was not acting maliciously, as you make it seem. I agree with this. The runner was trying to jar the ball loose, and as soon as he collided with Posey and it became apparent he was hurt, he was right there checking on him to make sure he was ok. That's not something you do if you're intentionally trying to injure someone.
  17. I loved that game. Posey should have a laser sword when he comes back.
  18. I was just about to post something like this. You beat me to it.
  19. Personally I have no problems with it. It's just playing hard. The baserunner obviously didn't mean to intentionally hurt him, and was only trying to score a run. It's unfortunate. No different than a runner taking out the SS or 2B trying to break up a DP, IMO, only there's more contact here. It's just playing hard, nothing more. There was no malice involved.
  20. In last nights game, Buster Posey was on the receiving end of a huge blow by a baserunner trying to score. His agent says that he's going to lobby MLB to change the rules to where a runner can no longer barrel into a catcher at the plate. I think this can make for some interesting discussion-- what are your thoughts? Here's the ESPN article... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6592212
  21. We're just awash in a sea of erik's here. You say that like it's a bad thing. And also I still think this series goes 7. The Bulls are nowhere near finished, IMO.
  22. Took a pitch off the face. Report is a deep cut under his eye, but awake and alert and never lost conciousness. He's at a local hospital for further care at present, no word since. Ouch.
