  1. For what it's worth. Barrett is a player I really like. He fights for his team, protects his pitchers, and plays above his head. He may not be the most talented athlete, but he plays hard and makes up for it with a lot of heart. Barrett = Solid.
  2. Not as green as you are with jealousy and envy Why would he be jealous? Pierre>Edmonds. Alsonotreally. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I know, not a fair comparison. If Pierre is the sparkplug Eck is for the Cards he will make a huge difference for the Cubs. But there's going to be a lot of people stretching doubles into triples with that arm.
  3. You only get one vote out of me. ;)
  4. None taken. I want the Cubs to be 100% healthy for 2 reasons. #1 I want the Cardinals to beat them when both are at full strength. Winning the division by 15 games over an injured rival doesn't prove much. #2 The last 2 years the Cards have spent September trying to figure out how to stay sharp. Fighting for a playoff spot is important. Sad to say, but it's true. We've been so far back (& even the Stros) there's been nothing to motivate the Cards in September. I'm not sure how that affects a playoff run, but it probably isn't all that good to be strolling into the playoffs and then suddenly have to go full blast. Still, it's a problem I sure wish we had ;) Certainly not in '06 unless some kind of miracle happens. A Wildcard team won the last 3 WS before last year, and the Sox didn't exactly cruise in to the playoffs last year. I really believe that being pushed to the end of the regular season puts teams into a playoff mentality. I want the Cubs to push the Cards to the very end. ...and then fall apart the last week of the season ;)

  6. Apparently he needs more wins. Right. I guess those three straight years of at least 130 ERA+ don't matter, especially when the only starters to have accomplished this from 2003-05 were him and Santana. I'll stop attempting to hijack this thread now. If Zambrano pitched for the Yankees or Red Sox he would lead Sportscenter every time he pitched. He is a special talent. He and Lee are the 2 most important players for the Cubs. I'd say Z may be the most important.
  7. Prediction from the other side of the rivalry. Williams comes up big in April and keeps the Cubs out of the early hole. Prior misses 2-3 starts then has a bumpy first couple outings before finding his groove. To start the season: Zambrano- is awesome (my early pick for Cy) Maddux- does well but it costs him later in the season Rusch- .... Bullpen gets a lot of work in the first month Williams- Goes 4-0 in April. This is his chance. Hill- ... Not ready. Yet...
  8. You can only hope. It's been many years since a Cardinal starter has wasted 10 or 15 starts, and it won't happen this year, either. How quickly we forget. :D Ahhh... Garrett. Those were the days. The horrid, we can't find a 4th or 5th starter to save our lives days. Anyway, it looks like the Cards have 7 guys that they can break camp with for the starting rotation. If LF doesn't shake out in the next 10 days or so you might see a move.
  9. He's having a great "Jim Lindeman" type of spring. I hope he can learn to play LF at AAA this year and have a shot to play for the big club next year. Hey, he's a better OF prospect than Ankiel!
  10. And that's wrong. I'm not huge Maddux fan, but he's a legit 3 in the NL. At worst he's a very good 4. He's not 5, really good or otherwise. 5 pitchers across the league don't come close to his level of effectiveness as a pitcher. He might not be worth his money, but he's better than even a really good 5. Hypothetically, if you leveled out baseball and called the best 30 pitchers "ones" the next 30 "twos" etc., the fives would be mostly guys who aren't good enough to be back this year. Hypothetically twenty of thirty "fives should be replaced by rookies or Rusch's. Saying he's a five is tantamount to saying he should retire because he doesn't belong on a major league roster. Luckily the field isn't level and the Cubs have a full house: aces over threes!!! Maddux could be the #3 on a lot of teams. The #4 on almost every team. The #5 on a playoff calibur pitching staff. That said, he's gonna give you 5 innings. No disrespect from me about Maddux. Greatest pitcher I've ever seen when he was in his prime.
  11. On what criteria is Maddux a #5? Of 49 qualifying NL pitchers he ranks: ERA - 36 WHIP - 16 OBA - 19 OPSA - 29 QualityStarts - 25 IP - 7 Can you name 3 NL teams with 4 more productive starters? I said he was a really good #5. I don't fear him like I did a few years ago. He's the greatest pitcher I've ever seen in person. He's on the decline now and no longer a front of the rotation guy.
  12. When you boil it down, doesn't it really come down to wins? If you left it out it wouldn't have changed the way I feel about Wood.
  13. I can't actually remember Kerry Wood being healthy ;) When he was, I always felt like you could count on that one big inning. With our offense vs the Cubs, and Wood and Suppan's playoff history I would. Now before you point it out, I do remember that Wood had a good 2003 playoff with the exception of game 7 of the NLCS. Suppan has gone up against some of the "aces" of other teams and faired quite well. So before he had his shoulder cut on he's had a .500 record against the Cardinals the past 4 years. No Fear. Zambrano I fear. Healthy Prior I fear. Wood.... no
  14. If the Lord is willing and the creek don't rise... Too bad the Cubs pitching already appears to be on the wrong side of healthy. Be honest... you fear a healthy Cubs pitching staff. Z Prior Wood Miller Maddux I'll be honest. Z - Yes Prior - Yes (unless he's hurt. which I think he is) Wood - I have zero fear of this overated one trick injured pony. Miller - Yes (3 years ago... now, not so much) Maddux- Eh- He's a really good #5!
  15. On this episode of "As the Cubs Turn"... I'm grabbing some popcorn and turning the radio on!

  17. At least he has the guts to call people out. That is not a knock on Hendry. It's a knock on just about every GM in every sport. Some of these players need to get told off from time to time.
  18. If you play that Steve Goodman song, "Dying Cub Fan's Last Request", backwards on a turntable, there's a section at the end where I swear it says "Mark is dead." I'm just glad that people still know who Steve Goodman is! I live 1 block off of "Steve Goodman Way" btw...
  19. I don't believe in Carl Everetts...
  20. wow... glad my fantasy draft isn't till next week. This could make a big impact on how the NLC shakes out...
  21. Someone complains of lack of originality and uses the trite rolling eyes emoticon. Pot, meet Kettle. We just expect more from you. Fat and gay is so last season. Don't have high expectations. I reserve the right to make fun of Ponson's obesity and Edmonds metrosexuality at whim. That's fine, but it means I can compare being a pitcher for the Cubs to being the drummer for Spinal Tap. ;) Witch!! Ban him!! :D How are the bandaid twins doing btw? ...man, opening day can't get here soon enough.

  24. Agreed, but I do have to say, there's a difference in pointing out someone's weight in terms to baseball and making fun of him. As far as Ponson... He should be in much better shape and there's only 2 possible reasons why he got that big. 1)He has a complusive personality 2)He's lazy I would be worried if Ponson was brought in to be the teams #3 pitcher. He's competing with 2 other major league ready prospects for the 5th spot so if he pitches well that's great, if he doesn't then it's not that big of a deal. It's kind of like the situation with the Cubs. If Wade Miller does well it's a bonus, but you're season isn't riding on it.
  25. Wow. Just got home to hear the news. I loved the way he played the game. I didn't know him or what kind of person he was, but I know that he was a player I enjoyed to watch in a game that I love.
