  1. One thing I really like about Pat's call is that he does what experienced baseball fans do at a game if the ball isn't a no-doubt-about-it HR: he watches the outfielder. Listening to Pat really puts me at the game: "And there's a high drive deep to left, Dunn is at the track, at the wall .. that ball is gone!"
  2. For me the Zen aspect of baseball is its most compelling. Pitching and hitting are extremely complex skills, but if you start thinking too much about either you are on a road to ruin. This aspect - the unconscious thing - is described very well in the recent ESPN Mag article on Brad Lidge:
  3. Just awesome 8-) thanks for putting that up.
  4. Wow nice blurb, and no stupid zingers. Kerry must be nice to Sullivan and actually give him the time of day. Doesn't surprise me, as Kerry has always been a class act. Sullivan seems to save his most venom for Prior, who used to routinely blow off Sullivan.
  5. He's also a freaking bad ass launching 400-450 foot bombs. I laughed when I saw him in the dugout after going yard today. Anyone else see this? He was hyper, walking up and down shaking his head ... I tried to read his lips, all I could get was "... try sneak that sheah past me ..." only it wasnt 'sheah'
  6. I really like when Dirty Dempster shows up, and he was downright filthy tonight.
  7. I hope we see him by the end of July/early August... of 2008? Hilarious! Because we've never heard that sort of joke before. It's right up there in originality with 'Hendry likes donuts' jokes. btw, happy birthday to KW - he turned 30 on Saturday.
  8. Exactly. The fact that Paul Sullivan reported this trash tells me all I need to know. Z does have a weird sense of humor, though.
  9. I know it's a cliche but it must be said: THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL c'mon guys, geez.
  10. http://www.zippyvideos.com/4383098085820026/chip_crazy_play/ "What a crazy way to end the game!" Man I love that video, thanks Aramis Fan.
  11. IIRC Lou said that Kerry would not get called up until he proved he could pitch on consecutive days; that would imply 3-4 appearances per week.
  12. Felix alright, not Felix too good myself.
  13. Re Kerry's thoughts about retiring, here is a quote from the NYT article: I think we'll see Kerry on the mound before the end of the season. Can't wait to see that standing o.
  14. An apt comparison between Felix and .. that other guy: http://www.allcubs.com/2007/02/felix_pie_is_no.html
  15. According to game notes: strained left knee. Anyone know how serious this is?
  16. The NL Comedy Central is now 40 games under .500 So on average the teams are almost 7 games under ... pathetic.
  17. Why would this thread be locked? Z is almost certainly hurt. He probably has a high tolerance for pain, plus with millions at stake he naturally wants to give the impression of being a completely healthy pitcher.
  18. Just hearing about this now. Few quick random thoughts 1. How friggin embarrassing. 2. Other GM's are probably calling Hendry right now with lowball offers for Barrett and Z. 3. Taking on Z ... wow. We all knew Barrett had stones and wasn't too bright but geez. Cue sunny theme of yesteryear: "It's a beautiful day for a ballgame, for a ballgame today. The Cubs are gonna pitch today, they're gonna hit today ..."
  19. I don't understand this move. Is it a matter of making sure Soto keeps getting daily reps instead of playing once a week? Side note: with Hill on the hill they will have an all-Hill battery. And if Glenallen and Bobby were still on the team ...
  20. Not to mention the USFL in the 80's. They filed and actually won an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL, but were awarded $3 in damages (that's right, 3 dollars). Carrying a debt of $160 million that $3 didn't go very far, and the league folded after a couple of years. Trump was one of the owners IIRC USFL would have been fine if they had stuck to a spring schedule. as soon as they decided to go heads up with the NFL in the fall, they were screwed No, the USFL would not have been fine. Practically all of the USFL franchises were hemorraging money because of the huge contracts they were playing their marquee players, and the USFL had a TON of talent. Whether the games were in the spring or fall, they were effectively in direct competition with the NFL from the get go. I think the USFL strategy all along was to eventually go to a fall schedule while pursuing the antitrust suit, and try to win some of the NFL's TV rights to stop the bleeding. I don't know the details of Cuban's proposed league, but to me it seems like a losing bet if history is any guide.

  22. http://snltranscripts.jt.org/89/89gpitman.phtml Hilarious deadpan delivery ... just reading the transcript something will be lost if you haven't seen the skit.
  23. Ding Ding Ding we have a winner. Nope this is the winner: Even got the "couldn't care less" part right.
  24. Wow - not the outcome I expected. Maybe the baseball gods finally took a little pity on us.
