    Wasn't that the game where Steve McMichael got ejected from the park for razzing home plate umpire Angel Hernandez during the 7th inning stretch?? That's right - same game. It also was WGN's first live HDTV broadcast. What a game to pick!

    August 7 2001, one of the most memorable 9th innings I've ever seen - there used to be a clip of this play somewhere online Ricky Gutierrez fell down rounding third trying to score from second on a single. The Rockies got distracted running down Girardi at 2B, meanwhile Ricky got up and scampered home. CUBS 9TH: FASANO REPLACED NORTON (PLAYING C ); SPEIER REPLACED L.     That was Kyle's 7th start in the bigs. He took Wood's spot in the rotation (Wood out for the year with TJ surgery). Kyle was sporting an ERA around 5.50 -- IIRC there were signs around Wrigley that said "We got Kyle", a sarcastic play on the We Got Wood t-shirts which were seen everywhere in '98. Also, Sammy's walkoff granny was off Hoffman.

    How is this question even remotely relevant? It's nobody's business, that's why it's an opt-in plan. Players may choose to release info that could clear their name. I don't see how it's so hard to understand that the medical info of interest to investigators only involves steroid use. As I understand it, other potentially embarrassing or damaging info would be withheld or somehow blacked out (someone will correct me if I'm wrong). We're talking about these guys' reputations and how they'll be remembered in baseball history. There are certainly some reasons to withhold facts that would help clear a guy's name, as Backtobanks mentioned, but they're just not as compelling as the reasons to come forward -- IF a guy really is clean.

    Let me rephrase the question slightly: Assuming the ballplayer is clean, what do you think is more likely? A major league baseball player chooses to: (A) Release his medical records because they can publically clear his name as a clean player of the Steroid Era. or (B) Not release the records because it is a matter of principle to him as an acknowledged privacy advocate, and is sincerely concerned about potential violations of HIPPA privacy laws. If I were a ballplayer and 100% clean, I sure as hell know which one I would choose.

    Not sure if this has been mentioned already in this thread, but anyone remember the last time the Cubs won 5 in a row? Mid-July 2005, one win each for Prior, Zambrano, Maddux and two for Wood. (This on the heels of an eight-game losing streak.)

    IMO Theriot should be an everyday player, batting 2nd and playing wherever, but preferably SS. That is all.

    Reminds me of the Monty Python bit where a pallbearer drops dead due to the strain; the other pallbearers pick him up, plop him into the same casket and stagger on. But seriously, this injury is so Cub I wonder if one of our guys simply forgot they were supposed to run into equipment yesterday.

    He would've had ZERO chance to throw out Murton from where that landed. He knew the game was over and just gave up on it. He initially came in on it, though. I grant you that he would have had little chance of throwing Murton out, but even on the off chance Murton falls down or something, you still have to make that play. Agree; he's gotta try to make that play. Even if it's well out of range, there's a small chance Murton leaves 3B too early.

    Also similar to clutch hitting, protection is a myth just because they cannot be quantified doesn't mean they do not exist. They do, In a lot of baseball peoples false perceptions. Which like I wrote is myth. mg is right. Just because we can't measure it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Like Bill James said, we might just be underestimating the density of the fog; the noise often swamps the signal. All we can say for sure is that protection might genuinely exist in isolated instances; ultimately it's a matter of opinion.

    can't imagine why, given our lights-out closer and our stellar record in close games Actually Dempster was a very shaky closer last year and far from lights-out. Also our record is one run games is actually 0-6, no where near stellar. In fact you could say its the exact opposite of stellar Well played - finally some creative sarcasm... sarcasm squared!

I didn't realize we were picking apart peoples heat of the moment reactions now..... :roll: A. DeRosa does what he is told B. You incorrectly attack DeRosa. C. Truffle is to blame. Got it. Isn't this the answer to every problem? no, that would be "blame it on CT" But CT isn't around enough anymore for that to be fun. Maybe we should just make fun of Boilermakers? Blame it on CT!! see, its still fun ;) Only because he knows Purdue is such an easy target. Seriously though, who would go to school there ON purpose? I just want to continue the ridiculous quoting going on. you got it! What's the record? Should we shoot for it? Do we have a chance? We've got a lot of heart and grit; I think we can do it!! Am I the only math geek geeky enough to notice the logarithmic indentation on these deeply nested quotes? (ducks at the impending punchlines)

    I disagree. Bill James looked for evidence that catchers have measurable impact on pitchers' ERA, and he looked for many years. He found none. However, absence of evidence is not evidence to the contrary. It very well may be that there is a cause-effect relationship in isolated cases that is swamped by noise when averaged over all catchers, hence unmeasurable.
