Looks like we're going to have meaningful late summer games for the first time in 3 years. Feels great. But perception and path dependence is a funny thing ... can you imagine the despair on this board if you reverse the Cubs W-L sequence? If they shot out of the gate playing .650 baseball, best record in MLB, then started losing til we dropped 2.5 GB behind Milw? Just goes to show how momentum plays a factor in peoples' estimation of future success.

Yahoo has screwed up just about every Cubs game I've "watched" on the computer; this is their account of the 5th inning today: Top 5th: Arizona - O. Hudson singled to left - O. Hudson flied out to right - O. Hudson homered to deep left, M. Reynolds scored - O. Hudson popped out to third - O. Hudson grounded out to pitcher O. Hudson must have been tired at all that.

I also wonder if Kerry is feeling an extra sense of urgency b/c of how well the Cubs have been playing lately. Kerry would have to be on the roster and playing well before Sep 1 to hope for a spot on the Cubs' postseason eligibility list.

Yeah I've always been a huge fan of Kerry and am pulling for him bigtime, but I was actually disappointed when I read this story. The 45mph with pain bit and the 4-day 'miracle' recovery bit didn't sound good. I don't believe much in miracles. It seems more likely -- and I think I understand why Fischer wouldn't want to say this publically -- that Kerry is "redlining" his shoulder. One little tweak or pitching with slight fatigue, a different arm slot or something, and he's back to square one. I also think Kerry lost too much weight. He was always stocky but never obese. He looks way too thin now. I hope I'm wrong because Sweet Lou is right: a successful comeback for Kerry would be a huge feel-good story, especially if he's instrumental in helping the Cubs to a playoff berth.

Why? The Cubs are only 3.5 back of the Brewers. Right. I'm not just saying the Brewers aren't catchable, but they might be less catchable than the WC teams ahead of us.

I think at this point if the Brewers were playing Atl or SD this weekend instead of SF, I'd almost be rooting for the Brewers.

I was at that game; when Prior came out in the 8th no one could believe it. About a half dozen fans around me sort of collectively gasped WTF?! ... one yelled "Dusty, see those guys on the bench near the LF line? That's your bullpen! Give Mark a break."

How can you NOT love this guy (unless you're abuck)? I think he's kinda acting like a jerk with that quote. +1 I don't think Z intended it as an obnoxious jab on Barrett or anything - the way the Trib reported this it sounded like an unintended joke at the end of a rambling stream-of-consciousness answer to a question about Hill: "The guy came from Triple A and he knows what to do behind the plate," Zambrano said. "He calls good games. Sometimes when I try to throw any pitch, he puts one finger down, and that's what you're looking for. You don't want to shake them off and call time out and bring your catcher to the mound, especially me. You know me. I like to pitch fast, and if I want to throw that pitch, I throw it. It's good to have him catching me. I think the next time I will try Jason. I know he's a good catcher, and I don't have problems with catchers."

Exactly. This simple point is lost on guys like Paul Sullivan. Case in point: Nomar. However you want to phrase it. Anyone still want to debate whether the picthers wanted Barrett to be traded? their performance says it doesn't matter. and if they wanted him gone just because they didn't like him then that's just as much their problem as barrett's. Look, I'm not saying it's the case, but is it really impossible that Barrett simply wasn't a good "fit," whatever that means, with this team at this point? Maybe his performance with the Padres is an example of the old hoary "change of scenery" cliche. Again, I'm not saying that this is at all definite, but you seem to respond to every idea that Barrett's time with this team had simply run its course as if they can't possibly be correct. that's because there's nothing to support that idea besides speculation. It IS just speculation, of course, but it was widely reported that Barrett leaked the gist of a players-only meeting to ESPN. That's a good way to instantly piss off your team, if true. No one on this board can say for sure if the speculation is true (with the possible exception of Bruce Miles), but you can't assume it's false either. It certainly is plausible given Floyd's quote and the fight with Z.

He roots for the Yankees AND Red Sox. That tells me just about everything I need to know about this psychic. I give him credit, though, for going out on a limb. Most psychics "predict" things like earthquakes in Japan.

It's ridiculous to think that Cuban would even drop a hint as to what his actual top bid might be. If he wanted to play that poker game, he'd drop a highball bid to scare off other potential bidders. But he'd have to make the leak a lot more authentic than telling FOX Sports Radio. Anyone else think that Cuban's chances for a successful MLB owners vote would go up much if he partnered with a more conservative, Selig-palatable co-owner? I'm talking about perceptions here ... ideally this co-owner would, in reality, be a hands-off, glorified investor. Wasn't the guy Wagner going to be his minority owner? Does he fit that bill? Todd Wagner certainly keeps a lower profile than Cuban; hopefully that counts for something. But from Selig's point of view, might he be viewed as a Cuban crony? I don't know ... Another thought that's probably been discussed ad nauseum, but if Cuban's bid to buy the Cubs is successful, does that automatically mean he sells the Mavs? Talk about selling high ... I'm not an NBA fan but I'd imagine the Mavs are at or near an all-time high in value right now.
