  1. I was hoping to find a ray of light in DeRosa's minor league numbers. minor league career OPS of 720 in over 2000 abs.
  2. no he didn't. he got Mark DeRosa. I think it unwise to consider a guy that had a career year at age 31 and barely eeked out a .350 opb for the first time in his career a ".350 obp+ at 2b" I'd rather just have Grudz back.
  3. it was mentioned earlier that he signed with the understanding that DeRosa would be the starting 2B. I think you missed the point I was making. less money would have gotten Craig Wilson and that monster line as a right handed platoon with Jones, and not have cost a type B signing.
  4. (a) we don't even know if the cubs have any interest in drew well that's a problem in and of itself.
  5. I already have and I'll be happy to be wrong. I will fully admit it. It took me a long time to turn, but this signing is dumb. where will you be when we here the "we thought we made an attractive offer" line?
  6. to all the critics, .395/.543/.938 sure would suck to have a hitter who's done that in his career against lefties platooning in right with Jacque, wouldn't it. hell, his .338/.455/.793 against righties stacks up with DeRosa's career best stats, plus he plays five positions, and the five positions we need backup at.
  7. What? Craig Wilson? The same Craig Wilson that sat on the Yankee bench at the end of the season? Wilson's 06 numbers: AVG .251 | HR 17 | RBI 49 | OBP .314 | SLG .446 jackassical. throw away six years of outstanding stick work because of 100 abs after becoming a Yankee.
  8. I've been a Hendry apologist before, but this is just [expletive]. I can't wait until he's saying "we thought we made an attractive offer" to the big outfielders or some decent pitching and don't get it done because he way overpaid to make a part time player a full time player at a position that the system probably is deepest at. I'd rather have a combination of Izturis/Cedeno/Bynum and Soriano/Lee/Drew and a number two than DeRosa and Juan Pierre and a couple number threes. and actually that's a false choice because you can just stick Theriot there and get similar production. and if that's over reacting, fine. it's not over reacting to say this blows a chance to get Craig Wilson, who would have improved the team a helluva lot more. this is just dumb and will screw the rest of the off season acquisitions.
  9. Where are you getting the .375 OBP vs. the .345 OBP? Who do these OBP's belong to? Jones last year: .334 Jones career: .328 Giles last year: .374 Giles career: .408 I wouldn't have an issue discussing the difference in OBP if you were using numbers that closely resemble both players. Jones and the .345 OBP is a number he's never accomplished in a single major league season, let alone for his career. The .375 OBP for Giles is the worst he's ever put up in a major league season. they were random numbers used to illustrate a point. despite a clear caveat that I am not getting into the Jones/Giles disucssion, you want to steer it back there. to further clarify the point, even though OPS does favor SLG, a 40 point difference in OBP does not make up for a 102 point difference in SLG. the OBP v. SLG components when OPS is close is useful. not so much when there is a 62 point difference in two players OPS.
  10. to some up the various offers rumored in major publications Drew at 11M per Soriano at 16-18M per even if Drew is out 1/4-1/3 of every single year and Soriano plays every single game every year, Drew is by far the better value.
  11. and for all of his shortcomings, alot of which is caused by the cover 2 not fitting his skills, Peanut is one of the best tackling corners I have ever seen in my life, so the #1 isn't getting any yac.
  12. if the numbers cheese threw up are true, no thanks. he's also by no means guaranteed to put up those numbers. I thought some people were getting greedy, but arguably the top three position FAs all to the Cubs? that's not pipe dreams, that's crack pipe dreams.
  13. Yep, here we go.... Per Rotoworld.com I think it might just be the Angels. nobody else has thrown silly numbers around.
  14. has there been an official word of whether the signing came too late and cost them the ability to sign 4 type a-b? I know the papers all say it was done on Sunday, but at the trade deadline they get some extra time to get the paperwork in after the primary terms are agreed to, so I'm holding out hope that might have happened here to.
  15. I was just about to ask that. I remember a bunch of people saying his defensive negatives outweigh potential offensive positives. i agree there were people against trading for soriano, but i assure you that wasn't a reason. not that it wasn't a little garnishment next to that big ol helpin of OBP.
  16. The numbers do not support this. Jones OPS last year was .062 points higher than Giles, for nearly half the cost. The OPS+ for Giles was only slightly less than Jones, but it was still less. Granted Jones had a career year, but Giles downward trend is consistent and notable. He is no more likely to reverse the trend than Jones is to repeat his 2006 year. So Giles is far from a 'significant upgrade' over Jones, when his production is likely to equal Jones going forward at twice the price no less. But OPS doesn't tell the whole story. OPS favors high slugging players. Giles OBP is going to be at least .030 points higher, probably much more. That's a very big margin. Also, Giles moving to a new team and into a better hitter's park, could possibly return his numbers closer to his '05 numbers. I'd say the increase in OBP and chance of him returning to his numbers before 2006 is worth the extra cost. I really don't have much input on the Jones/Giles debate, but here's the problem I have with this and have always had with this and have never had explained. in a 700 plate appearance season, the 'very big margin' that you are talking about translates into 21 additional times on base throughout the season (.375 v .345 obps) is 21 times where the guy who gets on base and theoretically has a chance to score really better if he has 10 fewer HRs were scoring is not a theory but reality? I agree that obp gets under billing in OPS, but I don't think its so vastly more important as it has been made out to be.
  17. gotta chuckle again at Peanut and Hunter lighting up would be tacklers on that return.
  18. tsk tsk to whoever suggested CSN. between Sayers and Geek Jackson, that coverage is terrible.
  19. is he redeemed if he again assembles a 100M caliber team and pays 100M for that team, but only 65M of players end up actually taking the field in 2007?
  20. gotta disagree. the calls were pretty one sided and it is a pattern with Hochuli's crew.
  21. Troy Smith has had 2 great games against UM, so i wouldnt put anything past him this year. Hopefully the more aggressive Dline will change that this year. In the past he has killed them with his legs and he doesnt seem to do it as much this year, plus UM's defense is better suited at stopping the mobile QB this year. It will be a good test for both of them. Lewis from Indiana isnt as good of a passer as Troy Smith is. However Michigan was able to contain his running ability pretty well on Saturday. Also even though he did buy himself some time he was unable to capitalize too much. Again I realize he isnt in the same class as Smith, If you are a Michigan fan you have to be pleased how they handled a qb with good running ability. I have the feeling that Michigan has been playing opossum on offense. For some reason I think we are going to see a more wide open attack from them this Saturday similar to the Notre Dame game. I just really think as long as Pittman doesnt bust loose on them they are going to win pretty easily. Lewis from Indiana didn't have the other ten Buckeyes surrounding him either. I see zero point in trying to predict what will happen in this game.
  22. Sorry, I forgot you would be an absolutely perfect NFL ref, and make even the toughest calls every time. My bad. dude, are you going to deny any of what we are saying were bs calls? even those you concede cost the Bears 3 points. you are right, the roughing call was weak, I said so at the time, although that is the rule. be a man and stand up and admit that you got some calls tonight.
  23. He's already complained about Rex. B- on special teams. gave up the long punt return, couple short punts and got the penalty on Worrell (another extremely questionable call), but still, a 49 yard FG and the runback. being a little harsh there GS
  24. How? The replay on the double fumble was terrible. And the phatom horsecollar. That's just off the top of my head. Those are the two that I have a big complaint about. Other than that, meh, it was like a regularly referreed football game. two blocks in the back on the long punt return by the Giants. quite a few missed holds, including two on Tiki's long run. there was more. safety on back to back plays.
