    That's the first thing I've ever agreed with you posting. Umpires have not made us suck this year. At all. One bit. nobody ever claimed it was the sole reason, and I whole heartedly disagree that the umpires haven't had an impact on many many games. if you could ask Greg Maddux and get a candid answer on the subject, he'd tell you about 4 or 5 games where he got hosed on a strike three call that changed the entire game. next time a Cubs hitter gets a borderline pitch called a ball, let me know.

    It's happening. DeMuth's terrible behind home plate. I'll look closer, but I don't recall DeMuth missing much. And that 3-0 strike Williams got with the bases loaded was definitely up and away. Got a break there. I've counted about three or four pitches so far in this game from both pitchers that looked pretty good, but called balls. perhaps, but I also noticed low strike call on Hairston high strike call on Walker outside strike call on Lawton while I also saw same location as Hairston called a ball on Burrell same location as Lawton called a ball on Howard.

    It's happening. DeMuth's terrible behind home plate. I was going to forewarn the board to not expect any breaks from DeMuth. for the most part, all the veteran umpires hose the Cubs on a regular basis. one of the best things that ever happened to the organization was the umpires strike and subsequent firing.

    this is fricken maddening. not only Williams failure to cover, but before the game, I heard Dusty on the pregame with Santo. he talked about how they are facing a guy who is effectively wild. so they have a game plan to be patient and take alot of pitches. so what do we see? we see Lee swing at two balls and K. we see Burnitz swing at two balls and pop up. we see Aram go out of the strikezone and K. we see Walker with a three pitch AB (one very generous called strike) and flyout on a ball. we see Neifi with a two pitch at bat flyout on a pitch over his head. Baker blows, but sometimes your team has to execute a game plan, and tonight, it's like they aren't even trying.

    He could and someday will be a great pitching coach... See, I don't know. It's a weird thing. Has any really awesome superstar player been able to make the successful transition to a manager or pitching/hitting coach? I know a few have tried, but it always seems to be the guys who had a cup of coffee in the majors or the guys who were the backup players that make the best coaches/managers. He's not a HOFer, but Joe Torre's done a decent job managing and was a great htter. Frank Robinson is a HOFer, his managerial success could be debated Felippe Alou was a very good player, and considered a great manager a couple years ago. I think Scioscia made a few all-star games, and he has a managerial ring. usually it is the marginal players that go on to managerial success, but there are plenty of good players that are/were able to transfer that knowledge.

    didn't want to start a thread for this, so I'll thow it here. just an amusing anecdote and a warning to minor league baseball fans with kids... this girl I work with has a boyfriend that is an umpire in the Carolina league. everytime there is an incident, he has to write a report. there was a series between Potomac and Winston-Salem this past weekend that was quite contentious between the teams and between the players and the umps. he emails the reports to his girlfriend and she showed me the ones from this series to me today. what's funny is that he writes things verbatim. no paraphrasing, no editorializing, no censorship. I have never seen so many F bombs on one piece of paper in my life. parents that are concerned about little kids not hearing curse words are better off bringing them to a Jay and Silent Bob movie than box seats at a Carolina League game.

    should we start a pool to pick which Cardinals pitcher will hit a Marlin with obvious intent, admit he threw at the Marlin with intent, and not get suspended? and who ever heard of a manager getting up an a players face? doesn't that warrant an ejection?

    Unfortunately Patterson's stats at Iowa look like his recent Cub stats. He's hitting .217, OBP below .300, a few HRs, and Ks in over 20% of his ABs; against AAA pitching. please see mine and burnt's posts on the topic on the previous page.

    FWIW, I looked a little more carefully into Corey's stats, and there are things that are encouraging. some mentioned the SBs already. some other things that are encouraging. for instance, his BB/K/AB is 4/13/67 which isn't fabulous, unless you consider this is Corey Patterson. it's easy to get down on his average, but we are talking about a small sample size, and for all we know he's hitting rockets at people. tonight he was 0-3 with 2 more k's, which is discouraging unless you consider the I-Cubs were two hit tonight, ,and this little snippet from the I Cubs website...

    oh to be young and unencumbered by responsibility. you guys should take advantage of this, especially since Treebeard is willing to drive most of the way. road trips are the best.

    just a couple thoughts on the game. first, you'll note that Willie McGee's homerun ball never came back on the field, which I hope will help dispell the myth that throwing homerun balls back is a "tradition." second, you notice how dusty everything was? it looked like the entire infield have two inches of loose dirt. after a player slid, he came up looking like PigPen. every step created a little dust devil. third, somethings never change. the Cardinals had a more generous strikezone then, just as they do now.

    Although he started out as a singles hitter, there are things you can do to gain more power. Bulking up (naturally) and changing your swing a bit, working with the right coach in the offseason can help. which may account for his first power boost in 1990-1991. but then a second boost two years later? I'm not saying Rafy didn't work hard and improve on his own, but all the anecdotal evidence seems to point to Canseco telling the truth in his book.

    so with all of this talk about Raffy and his 3000 hits and his HOF chances, there was also alot of talk about how he was a singles hitter when he first came up. it got me to wondering when he became a slugger. in 91 and 92 he as a 20-25 HR, 85 RBI hitter. in 1993, he busted out for 37/105. http://www.baseballreference.com/c/cansejo01.shtml when Jose was in the news, half the talk was about tearing down his credability. seems to me he's turning out to be the only honest one in the bunch.

    just some food for thought I think the only players that have to go through waivers are those on the 40 man, and I think the Cubs have a 40 man crunch coming up this off season, so couldn't a package of those players not yet on the 40 man, who would have to be on next year, be used without having to consider the waiver intracacies on the players going to the Reds?

    re: Lawton's splits. do these 2001 splits make any sense? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/5511/splits?year=2001&type=Batting unless he reached in like 23 of 25 times at bat right before the ASB then did nothing the rest of July, how does he post a .324 second half OBP when by month he went .373, .358, .379?
