This WAS a salary dump for the Rangers. Soriano is going to make something like 10 million if I've read correctly. And yet the Rangers still got, by FAR, the better of the deal. that's what I'm saying. the Nats took a huge chunk of salary, gave up a player better than the one they got, and tossed in a potentially very good player and PTBNL. it just doesn't make sense. is ML just trying to devalue the Nats to the point where someone will actually buy them?

Macias DFA
jjgman21 replied to Productive Outs's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I hope he accepts the assignment and goes to Iowa. It's not like he'll ever be re-rostered, and maybe he can pass some useful ML info to someone, or turn into a good coach. He seemed like a good teamate, and players that suck but try usually make good coaches. If he doesn't catch on somewhere, he's made a couple million. So it's hard for me to feel too sorry for him. if jose became a manager, do you think he would use jose or someone with jose's skill set, as the number one pinch hitter off the bench? someone said that he did some spazz dance with the latin players. I saw him keeping everyone loose. on a few occasions I saw him and Prior horseplaying in the dugout on cutaways. he did seem like a very good teammate. with that said, thank gawd. it's about fricken time. -
If US presidents lost wars as frequently as Cubs GM lose games, I'd be pretty upset. But by and large, US politicians have been far more successful running this country, its states and cities than any Cubs GM I've ever met. I don't ever recall a GM in any sport losing a game. I've never even seen any of them in uniform for that matter. not the place for this but...so elected officials can keep lieing and misleading and saying things that fly in the face of facts, as long as they win wars, cuz everyone knows governments only job it to win wars. I think our energy would be better spent demanding straight talk from our elected officials instead of our team's GMs. call me crazy. and with all these Cubs GMs you've met, you should get them to NSBB for guest chats.

I wish people demanded the same things of their elected officials that they demand of their favorite sports teams' general managers. this place is a constant mad dash to be the first one to bash Hendry. I've lost most of my own faith in him, but to pick apart every word he utters in an inane conversation with Rob Dibble is pretty weak.

Rumor- Jack Wilson to the Cubs
jjgman21 replied to Blueheart05's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
he also said that they're targeting milwood. offman knows nothing about baseball, and he's right there. Ofman first reported the Pierre story a month ago saying that it would likely include Pinto. So, um, he may know a little something. The anti-Score sentiment here is pathetic. I don't live in Chicago or listen to any of the radio stations there, but I think that makes the Score 1 for 400,000 in the rumor dept. I mentioned in the other thread, throw a handful of darts and one is bound to stick in the dartboard. -
Cubs Acquire Juan Pierre
jjgman21 replied to mgallagher's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
Fixed (I assume the Len Kasper reference was about the Furcal situation, which I think we've pretty much concluded was actually the cubs.com poster impersonating Len). if you throw a handful of darts at the same time, one is bound to actually stick in the dartboard. on this thread, I am by no means enamored by Pierre and didn't want the Cubs to get him, but some of the extremes people are going to to detract from his abilities are absurd. for instance, ranting about his Coors inflated numbers while ignoring two of his three best years came in Florida, where there is lots of friction in the air. or complaining about the number of doubles he hits, while ignoring he is in the top two in baseball in triples year after year. and all the speculation about what will happen as a result of the infield grass is just that, speculation. for all we know, for every ball that will now be cut off in the hole, there may be a chopper that the infielders can't get to. or attributing his day night splits to chance when the numbers show he is better in day games year after year after year. could the Cubs have done better? who knows. we don't know what is going on during these various meetings and have no idea what the barriers are to all of the different transactions. go ahead and state your opinion, but please try to stop presenting your opinions as fact, and then trying to prove your point with facts that are either speculative or selective and incomplete. -
Lead off or manager problems?
jjgman21 replied to NoDak's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
as stated by another poster in another thread -
If this happens, I beg someone to ask something like this at the Cubs Convention: "You said you signed Neifi because you decided you like guys who can catch the ball. How do you reconcile those sentiments with the acquisition of Soriano, who can't catch a cold?" I also don't understand why the Rangers would give up Mench for a 35 year old pitcher that is decidedly average in any role.

Why so down on Pierre?
jjgman21 replied to Bruno7481's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
isn't this where all the moneyballers jump in? who cares what the scouts say. I'm sure scouts don't like him because he's a .260 singles hitter. I'll look when I get home, but I'm willing to bet that Pierre never had OBPs of .390+, .370+, .370+ when he was in the minor leagues. one thing that generally never changes between levels of baseball is the ability of a hitter to tell the difference between a ball and strike. Bacon is a walk machine. -
I finally found it!!! (Wild ending to Rockies/Cubs 2001)
jjgman21 replied to Schwarber Fan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I, to this day, have no idea how we almost made the playoffs that year with Bill Mueller missing most of the year (and being replaced by Ron Coomer), Damon Buford playing a prominent role, Matt Stairs playing first for half the year, our best pitcher being Jon Lieber, the immortal Jeff Fassero blowing games left and right out of the bullpen, etc. That was just a majorly overachieving team. What a fun season. :P actually Fassero had a great year, as did Von Poppel, the Farns and Flash. combine that with one of the best single season offensive performances in history (Sosa). I remember thinking that all we needed was McGriff to waive his no trade and the Cubs would make the playoffs. McGriff finally did waive the no trade, and the Cubs promptly tanked. and if I recall correctly, Mongo stated he would have "some speaks" with the umpire. I still chuckle to myself about it. -
Why so down on Pierre?
jjgman21 replied to Bruno7481's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
you say so, therefore it is? this is the type of indepth analysis that we've all come to expect here at nsbb. wait...sorry, I was confused....this is the type of snide remark that brings this place down to the level we all tried escape from when we left other boards. prey tell, why is it impossible? -
Why so down on Pierre?
jjgman21 replied to Bruno7481's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
let's face it, the only desireable attributes of Pierre is ok OBP and good speed. Is it completely out of the realm of possiblility to think Dwaine Bacon could give you the same OBP and SB% as Pierre? all Bacon does year after year is put up terrible SB% and fantastic OBP, no matter what level he is at, and he does it with walks, so the friendly confines wouldn't damage his numbers like it would Pierre. he stikes out a ton (not too important as the leadoff man and batting behind the pitcher), but would make the league minimum. any chance we already have a stop gap leadoff guy in the system in the person of Dwaine Bacon? -
I'm so fricken miserable right now. I've pretty much always been a Hendry supporter. both because of the good things he did for the organization before last off season and because I thought last off seasons debacle possibly was the result of madates from the higher ups. but the Rusch and Neifi signings say to me that either Hendry is either completely incompetent or that Baker has as much to do with the GM duties on this team as Hendry. there are two possibilities with this Neifi signing: A. signed to be a bench player - terrible move. $2.5 M for a backup infielder? he was borderline overpaid last year when he made $1 M to be a backup infielder. neither the Yankees, RedSox, Phillies, Mets or any other big revenue team spends that much on a backup infielder. what gives anybody, particularly the GM, the idea the Cubs should? B. signed to start - given how absurd A really is, we all better resign ourselves to the fact that Neifi Perez was signed to be a starter. I don't think I need to go into the details of why signing Neifi Perez to be a starter at either short or second is a bad idea. Sulley - please find us a die hard Cub fan who also happens to be a union or demonstration organizer. if the team continues to be assembled as it appears it is, I propose a boycott and picketing at the Cubs Convention.

That 's sigworthy. :jocolor: even if that is true, I am simply fascinated that so many are willing to gamble on one injury riddled pitcher while trashing and waiving goodbye to the other. is this just a case of the grass is always greener? http://www.baseballreference.com/b/burnea.01.shtml http://www.baseballreference.com/w/woodke02.shtml what's the difference? I mean besides the fact that Kerry Wood averages more starts and innings per year over the course of his career? (shudders thinking of Mike North saying "this AJ Burnett has never won more than 12 games in a year")

can't we just sticky this thread so it doesn't have to appear over and over and over?

with men on base, that is not true. that's why a strikeout pitcher is preferred by some to pitcher who pitches to contact. the drawback is the high pitch count...which doesn't matter if they aren't laboring, but obviously leads to stints on the DL if your manager is oblivous. it all depends on the situation. 99.9% of the time, a popout = strikeout, no matter what. in many situations, a groundout with a man on first is better than a strikeout, because of the potential to get two outs. the point is this. his infatuation with the strikeout leads to high pitch counts. high pitch counts do matter, laboring or not, because it leads to the starter not working deep into a game. our bullpen sucks and has sucked all year and Prior has made zero adjustments to start pitching deeper into his starts. what I would prefer is a pitcher who pitches to contact when he can and pitches for the strikeout when he needs to. Mark Prior tries to strike everyone out. its the same argument everyone has used to detract from Kerry Wood for years. the difference is Wood has always been called a thrower. Prior has always been called a pitcher, but I'm seeing less and less pitching out of Prior and more and more throwing. its just another example of the rampant dumbness that infects this team. the whole damn roster is a little thin between the ears. untrue. strikeout and groundball pitchers are the most consistently effective pitchers in the majors. pitchers who get more flyouts than groundouts and don't have high k rates generally suck. I'm not sure what you are saying is untrue, or exactly where your point fits into the discussion. generally pitchers who average 7+ innings per start are the most consistently effective pitchers in the majors too. I agree Mark Prior is one of the most consistently effective pitchers in baseball. he consistently gives the Cubs 6 innings of work and generally allows few runs in his outtings. unfortunately 6 innings of work isn't good enough with this team and I am of the opinion that if he didn't try to strike every batter out he would be able to go more than 6 innings per start.

while the broken elbow is one huge consideration, I've been saying for two months now that Mark Prior is causing himself and the Cubs alot of problems with his infatuation with the strike out. groundout = flyout = popout = strikeout. he does in 10 pitches what should be done in 4.
