BTW - you are assuming something that is not a fact is a fact. If you think a run saved = a run earned that would need to be proved too. Ditto park adjustments.

Before anyone wants to get their knickers in a bunch, I am not saying that defense is unimportant. It's very important. But there are so many variables that go into it, that it's importance is difficult to quantify. Putting numbers to it doesn't make it better or add value or precision. The metrics are still useful but likely only in the aggregate (comparing one player to another and throughout many seasons).

The market proves this every day through the contracts they pay. But logic dictates that you cannot win a baseball game (the purpose) if you don't score a run. You cannot prove you've saved a run unless the runner was called out on the play. Therefore, in any case other than that you have to infer a run may have been saved, which is a hypothetical construct and not a real thing. It is only theoretically that one can show a run scored is equal to a run saved, but the math would have to work, and it doesn't because it cannot, because you cannot prove something didn't happen (wich is the basis of our legal system).

This is all I'm going to say about that - If Soto were an all-glove average hitting OF with a cannon arm he wouldn't be making a quarter of a billion dollars over the next decade. Some things are hard to quantify and prone to measurement error, defensive value in baseball is one of them.

Jed et al. like "gloveWAR" because it is less expensive and is of the mistaken belief (as are others) that all WAR is created equal. It is not.

We don’t know a thing about Canario in MLB. DFA him for Harrison Bade is dumb. But they dumped their utility player because they thought he was making a few million more than he should be making so smart might not be an option.

His behaivor with regard to the Cubs. He's the same as he ever was. He's looking for value and willing to pass on better players who he thinks are making too much money for too long. Regardless of whether they win I think Jed's job is safe. EDIT: Unless he wants to go somewhere else. I could see him teaming up with Theo and Breslow in Boston.

I've been thinking a lot about this. Some might say too much. After reading Tom and Jed's comments about clean books and value, I've concluded that Tom has told Jed to have as few commitments as possible heading into the next CBA. I think their (the Ricketts and some other owners) plan is to radically alter free agency. I don't expect that they will extend Tucker; next year, they will not make any long-term commitments to high-dollar players. So no, winning is not at the top of the list for our front office and owner.

I'm a "big hall" guy two. If I could wave a wand or be the dictator of the HOF, I would change the HOF and put it in eras. Deadball Pre-integration Post-integration to West Coast Baseball (1947-1957) West Coast-1976 1977- Steroid Era Steroid Era (1994 to 2005) 2006-Private Equity Era A guy would get put in the era where he predominately played.
