  1. The thing is, whether those 6-8 other teams will be as willing to part with the players to make it happen.
  2. Optimistic: Closer by the end of the year. Realistic: Middle relief, good WHIP but high walks. Pesimistic: DL by June and selling insurance in 2007
  3. Without Phillip Hughes on the trade table I cannot see any chance of landing Willis even if they include Duncan.
  4. Of course they do. Teams that win impressively are often moved ahead of teams that don't win impressively. This in turn effects the BCS. The same goes for losses. If someone beleives that Michigan didn't play as well as the score indicated, then sure, it does matter. When and where? Before you go looking don't waste your time. It is impossible. There are too many variables in play to make such an argument. Did Michigan lose spots when they barely beat Ball State or OSU when they barely beat Illinois?
  5. No way. Let's not get carried away here folks. The Cubs have upgraded at one position and even with D-Lee healthy all year their offense is no great shakes, especially with Soriano leading off. Even if they get Shmidt they will still have to hope DeRosa, Barret, Aramis, Jones, Soriano, and Lee (2005) don't regress, in addtion to hoping Izturis and/or Cedeno can significantly improve. Their rotation after Z and Shmidt is not guarenteed to be any better than last year's. The Cubs have a long way to go before they can be considered a contender. A long way.
  6. Tejada & Jones > Wells & Izturis/Cedeno not to mention Wells is a year rental, because his contract demands after 2007 will be insane, especially after the year he is going to have in his contract year. Defensively & Financially: Wells & Izturis/Cedeno > Tejada & Jones. Vernon Wells is not going to come cheap, but who's to say next years Outfield market will be the same as this years. Anyone know who will be on the market next year? Vernon Well and Andruw Jones to name two.
  7. Once again: That game should never have been that close. Ohio State thoroughly dominated the game, and if not for Troy Smith fumbling a snap and Doug Datish completely botching another, Ohio State wins the game by 13 or 17 and we're not even having this discussion. but they did, so it was that close. As they say, if the Queen had balls... The point is, it's not like Michigan played well enough to force a rematch. OSU just played imperfectly enough to keep the game close. I am on record not supporting a remach. However, your logic in this case is completely flawed. Teams don't get awarded style points. OSU dominated the game as they have every other game this year, but it was still close, and that is all that matters.
  8. Pie projects to be a middle of the order hitter. Think a young Sammy Sosa, only better. . . If he reaches his potential.
  9. Well, the local guys from SF say it is.. I guess the point is, someone's wrong and someone's right. Who the hell knows. True. Yet, I'd presume the local SF guy probably talked to Shmidt's agent knowing full well the Cubs are in spending mode. Just my un-educated guess though.
  10. Good work, as usual. I'd sign on to that. However, the key is finding a suitable replacement at SS.
  11. I'll trust Bruce and the other local guys before a national media outlet like ESPN any day. Everything that has been posted thus far seems to stem from one report that has been reverberated in the echo chamber (other media outlets, etc.). I don't know how anyone could trust a place like rotoworld.com for any original reporting. They aren't even a media outlet. If the local guys say it aint so, it probably isn't.
  12. Go Broncos! The International bowl in lovely Toronto Canada in January! Where do I get my tickets? :D
  13. It is one gigantic circular rumor mill, kind of like high school.
  14. 15 million/year should come close to landing Shmidt. I think the question will be lenght of the contract. Thanks Bruce.
  15. But you do have Izturis in his place who had an OPS of .613 to Cedeno's .610 And Izturis significantly underperformed his 2006 PECOTA My prediction is that Izturis won't be playing too much if he puts up a similar month to the last couple to the last couple seasons. The Cubs simply cannot afford to allow that. My hope is he isn't on the opening day roster but I doubt that will come true. But if he is on the opening day roster, then it's probably too late to get a real upgrade. Therefore, if he puts up a month similar to the last couple seasons, the Cubs won't really be in a position to upgrade, other than going to Cedeno or maybe Theriot, neither of which is a lock to be better. Which is reason number 1 why I hope the Cubs can pursuade Lugo to goin the club. My hope is that they are telling the media it is for CF but it is really for SS. If they get Lugo they can afford to go with a lessor talent in CF, almost.

  17. Only when a player has terribel IsoD, but I get what you are saying. Nevertheless, that fact doesn't not make Hendry's assertion any less ridicilous. The problem with the Cubs IS NOT BA w/RISP. It never has been.
  18. Living Hall of Fame members vote only for those on the Veterans Committee ballot. They do not vote in this phase of Hall of Fame balloting. This phase is reserved for BBWAA members who have been members for at least 10 years. Bruce, Are you eligible to vote? Would you vote for Dawson for me it you can?
  19. The only "real" championhsip week in college football. Go UCLA!
  20. No. I don't think Hendry would have traded Maddux for Izturis if he didn't think Izturis was the man for the job. Obviously, I disagree, but I don't run the Cubs. Hendry has given no indication he plans on pursuing an alternative. What is kind of funny though is that they are targeting a SS to play CF. I just don't get Hendry.
  21. Boras gross profit might be high but his net profit is nowhere near his gross. He has to hire dozens of people to assist him with these clients. I am reasonably sure Boras is stinking rich but I don't think he makes that much off of individual contracts. After paying the bills I imagine it is about 1 or 2% of the contract. Do you really think that's all he nets? I can't imagine his gross is less than 5% of the cash he brings in even after paying all the help. Even if it is 2%, that's still almost $2.5 mil on Beltran's deal in his pocket. I'm just guessing, but the I don't think his net is that high and after one factors in taxes it is probably signifanctly less. The value in a big contract for the agent is the fact that the contract attracts other players to the agent.
  22. Why should Sosa have to admit to using steriods? Imagine if you were accused of "coping a feel" (1st degree sexual assult) but didnt' do it. Now imagine if the Cops said to you "just admit it and we'll go easy on you". Would you do it? Sosa has never been caught with steriods. To my knowledge no one has come forward to say Sammy did steriods. If he is as big a jerk as people making him out to be, I'd imagine someone would have come forward by now. Sammy was a malnurished kid when he came up and packed on muscle every year. There is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary about his growth. Now I'm not saying Sammy is clean, I don't know that for sure. But I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

  24. No one is suggesting that they'd be fine with Cedeno or Izturis. The Cubs need and upgrade and Theriot is not an upgrade that anyone should count on. It is just not a good idea.
  25. I'm saying..... I sure as hell hope Hendry's not done !!! Yep.
