    It’s exciting and all but they have to get the pen stabilized. Just throw strikes. It’s obviously easier than that, but if I’m Counsell that’s what I tell them. If you can’t get them out by throwing strikes you can’t pitch for the Cubs.

    I'm no draft expert and a casual fan of football, and I know the Bears need some high-impact talent, but it seems weird to me that they may take a tight end when it's not a position of need like DL/OL/DE.

    Mervis has a record of needing a lot of reps to get acclimated. I would not be a bit surprised if he has a long career like Matt Stairs.

    That's what I want, a bully, Jake Arrietta style on the mound (not off).

    I'm not into rankings of things, but Jed and his team are a C- on an A-F scale. It seems to me that they have done everything they've wanted to do, their way. My biggest criticism is that Jed is too risk-averse, and it shows in everything they do. They draft guys who project to be good, not great (Happ, Shaw, Nico, Wicks, even Howard). They sign FAs who are good, not great. And when they do sign a potential difference maker, they hedge their bets with short-term contracts and opt-outs. And they don't spend on a volatile commodity like bullpen pitchers. They are happy to be an 80ish win team. That seems to be the goal, and they are there.
