  1. If'n he's backing up Theriot how good can he possibly be? I think DeRosa came up as a SS but hasn't played SS much at all since 2001. That was a long time ago. My big fear is that the pitching won't hold up. It's like whack-a-mole with Hendry. He never plans for the worst case.
  2. I think it makes a difference when they've shown to be credible sources of information before. Credible? They called the Tejada trade before it was done but after it was in every paper this side of the Weekly World News. I think some of you are having your chain yanked.
  3. That old fart in the middle is a dick in person. He's at all the OSU games and does some stupid dance that everyone cheers.
  4. Is this thing actually happening? If it does, who is going to be the backup SS? Does it kill the depth at the starter position? Wouldn't Theriot become the backup? No. I agree with the ugh sentiment.
  5. Obama's going to take all the indie's and MIt wins. A win for wooden people all over the world!
  6. Clemens should take all his money and just fade away. If I could talk to him i'd tell him to drop the shovel. He's only digging a deeper grave for himself.
  7. He spent a fair amount of time at the top of the order when Soriano was out so I don't buy your argument about hitting in front of Lee as the main cause. And his .266 BA tells the rest of the story. More than half of his at bats came hitting 2nd. About 80% of his at bats came hitting 1st or 2nd. He doesn't strike out that much, and if he's the terrible hitter that most people on here think he is, doesn't it make sense that pitchers would throw him pitches that he'll hit on the ground? I'm not saying anything about Theriot's baseball ability, other than commenting on his eye at the plate. I've watched enough games (and I'm sure you have too) to know that Theriot doesn't swing at crap. As such, the fact that his P/PA is so bad probably has something to do with the fact that he's seeing a lot of strikes. I really don't like looking at P/PA anyways. To use a very simplistic example, a player who looks at three fastballs down the middle every time he steps into the box will be said to "have a better eye" than someone who swings at the first pitch and hits a double every time up there if you only look at his P/PA. This is an area where I think scouting/watching the game/whatever you want to call it easily trumps looking at statistics. It's not really worth debating, but if he has such a good eye he'd wait for a pitch that he could drive like Bellhorn use to do instead of swinging at anything in the zone (a bit of an over simplification).

  9. I've had ideas way worse than that.
  10. I think he's already gone. Gary Hughes?
  11. Eh, it's an interesting idea but I don't know if I'd really care if there was no ultimate championship to root for. Yay, you won the Big 10. Here's your trophy, go home. Then everyone would be arguing ad infinitum: the Big 10 sucks anyway! Who cares if you won it, you'd never beat the other conference champs! And yada yada. I don't see it solving much, just creates a whole bunch of hypothetical arguments that would never cease. Not to mention that's essentially what the system was like before the BCS, and yet that didn't stop people from declaring national champions every year. The BCS just added a more objective and standard way to do that. Perhaps a little more objective than what preceded it, but not even close to objective. If we take goony's position, then they should go back to the way it was. If we take the opposite, then they need to let the championship be decided on the field and not by sports writers and coaches. Either way, they should do away with the BCS. The championship is already mostly decided on the field. Coaches and writers have input, but by and large, the best team gets a chance to win its last game and be crowned champ. You still have to win games, both regular season and bowl, to win a championship. This is true, but for the most part it matters when you loose and how high you were ranked before you lost. A case can be made that LSU is the best team this year, yet shouldn't be in the championship game. But really I guess I'm just a bored as you are as I really couldn't care less; I'm pretty much playing devil's advocate (poorly) in this thread.
  12. Was it the same time the Roberts rumors were flying? If yes, there's your answer.
  13. what would you say if I told you I had evidence to suggest that Theriot does not, in fact, find a way to get on base all that well? Inconceivable!

  15. Haha, ridiculous. What is so ridiculous? They cannot compete year in and year out. Two of those teams (South Florida and UConn) have made great strides despite being in Division 1 only 5 years or so, including both of them being ranked this year. I don't see how they have proven they can't compete year in and year out. Another one (Louisville) has been one of the better college football teams in the nation most of the last few years. And does the Big 10 now have to add ND for basketball as well? It's not like ND can join the Big East for football now that you've disbanded it. I assume you're kicking the other 3 independent teams down to 1-B and making them join conferences as well? Plus, if you're going to kick out teams for poor play, then some of the teams in the other conferences should go down to 1-B as well. I don't know why the Big East teams would get singled out when teams like Indiana, Vanderbilt, Baylor, and Stanford have been as bad or worse over the years. I'm not real serious here. Anyway, I think a case can be made that teams that have been in D1 for five years or less should be sent packing. It's not like they have a history, strong following, or a chance. If they are going to a real playoff I could get behind a system that got rid of the bottom feeders in any of the major conferences.
  16. Haha, ridiculous. What is so ridiculous? They cannot compete year in and year out. How long has South Florida been Division 1? 7 years? And they are already competing this year. Louisville competed the prior 2 years, Cincinnati and UConn were top 25 teams this year, and Rutgers was top 10 last year. So yes, ridiculous. They cannot even compete for a conference title year in and year out. They are mostly below .500 teams with an occasional good season. As soon as Louisville and Rutgers lost their coaches they became also-rans.

  18. I'd disband the conference and fold: Pac 10 (10 schools) Big 12 (12 schools) SEC (12 schools) ACC (9 schools)+: Pitt WVU Syracuse Big 10 (11 schools)+: ND To division I-b: UConn Cinc. Rutgers Louisville South Florida Eliminating them from title contention? They have the division 1b title game to compete for. :D In reality it wouldn't be hard for me to be persuaded to move the entire conference to division 1b.

  20. Hawaii and Kansas. They need to quit pretending that teams from the WAC, MAC, C-USA, Mountain West, and Sunbelt are D-I, this isn't basketball. In my opinion they should make D-Ia Big 10 SEC ACC Big 12 Pac 10 D-1b WAC MAC C-USA Mountain West Sun Belt Each division has a 10 team playoff, with the top two teams from each conference getting into the playoffs. The teams in each division only play schools in their division during the regular season and total records count for playoffs, not just conference records. Edit: Oh, and the money generated gets distributed evenly to all institutions in each division. These are places of higher learning after all. I think you are painting with a bit of a broad brush. The Sun Belt, MAC and CUSA (in its current form) can't compete, I agree. But the WAC (Boise, Hawaii, Fresno St) and Mountain West (BYU, Air Force, TCU, Utah and occassionaly Colorado St) conferences have solid, if not upper-level, DI programs. Not one of those schools will ever come close to the BCS championship game. The best that they can hope for is what Hawaii accomplished this year. They have to decide what matters. If it is money, keep the system the same but find a way to more evenly distribute the money. If finding the best team matters most, they need to winnow away the lesser conferences and go to a playoff. I also forgot to mention that ND should be forced to join a conference.
