  1. Everything is relative. The Cubs don't have a lot of stars, or any for that matter now that Willson is gone. This year they have a lot of complementary players and a lot of hope for some breakout performances. I think they will be close to .500, maybe better if they get some breakouts and everyone stays relatively healthy. This whole approach is so self-fulfilling. Don't slightly overpay for good players unless you are rich and also in contention already. Probably won't be in contention because you don't have any of those good players. The idea that teams at or below the spending habits of the Cubs (15th, 10th, 6th, 2nd, 4th the last 5 years in opening day salary based on some sketchy website) shouldn't pay market value for the dude who hit 50 home runs last year is absurd. You're basically just hoping for some perfect storm of prospects arriving collectively at the same time and then hopefully having the right players available to supplement. I don't disagree with anything you wrote. I also think they should extend Nico. It's a must-do.

  3. Schwarber is a complementary guy who's going to make a good team better at scoring runs, but he's not a guy you want to pay big money to have on your team. This year he's going to make $20M. That's a lot of money for his level of production. If you have an owner who is fine with that, you have a good owner. The Cubs don't have that luxury. However, Swanson is making $25M and I'm not sure paying Swanson is all that smart either.
  4. i probably would too, but word is he tanked his pro day today BADLY. looked really out of shape. I keep reading about how he's an absolute monster some games and invisible other games, seems to have motivation issues. I have a feeling with today's news he is going to drop to mid-1st. Could be wrong but there are a lot of red flags surrounding him. I can only imagine the millions he's losing
  5. He's as likely to retire and get a gig on TV as he is to sign another NLF contract. He's toast.
  6. Wasn't quite sure where to put this, but it appears the Cubs have been recently valued at $4.69B (+Wrigley and Marquee). The Ricketts paid $900M for them 2009. So they have more than quadrupled in value in 14 years. About 30% return on investment year over year.
  7. I'm getting the same vibes, almost every offensive player he's signed or traded for appears, for their position, to be a good run blocker. I loathe the meathead run the ball, defense approach it's woefully outdated, it will not work in today's NFL and its boring as hell. I agree running is important, most especially having a mobile QB - a Mahomes scramble was key to the Chiefs B win - but you've got to throw the ball to win games. It's puzzling to me that Poles, coming from the Chiefs, is going along such a route. I think it's a little premature. Let's wait and see what happens after the draft and the second free-agency period. The NFL is a mimic league. One would think that the people in administration would attempt to emulate what works for other organizations. By the same token, it stands to reason that an OL guy who is a good run blocker would also be a decent pass blocker. It's not as easy to use stats to determine that in football. A lot of the Bears rushing yardage was on broken pass plays, not because they had great run blocking and poor pass blocking. They had a bad OL.
  8. It's kind of amazing, really. This guy has been bumping around the minors since he was 22. Didn't come to this bigs until 29 and has a total of about 40 IP in the majors.
  9. I understand the Happ situation. I don't get the Nico situation. They keep saying you have to build from within and you can't buy your way to a WS through FA. Well, the system is bare at the middle infield. You have a guy who can hold down the position for the next 6 or 7 years and give league-average or better production and league-average or better defense. If they can get him for 5 of those years for less than it will cost to replace him, they should do it. Using the Joey Votto logic to hitting in the MLB, I suppose Morel could replace him, but he has to show he can hit a fastball first.
  10. There has been no news on either extension, but there is a new article in the Athletic that says Happer is worth about 5/$90M. I don't think Tommy Boy's Tommy Boy is interested in that at all. I'm not sure I am either given the depth of outfield prospects on the near and mid-term horizon. Nico on the other hand needs to be locked down at fair market value. https://theathletic.com/4297008/2023/03/14/walk-year-extension-mlb/
  11. I had a contrast dye MRI on my heart last Friday. I haven't gotten the results back yet so I don't know if I will need a stint or a restricted diet. Maybe both. The worst case is they have to crack open my chest.
  12. They seem to have a plan. Not signing offensive linemen in FA appears to be part of it.
  13. Sampson getting rocked again
  14. They looked really good today. McKinstry needs to do something here soon or he’s going to get cut.
  15. I figured it would be Carolina. I don’t know enough to have an opinion about the compensation. I think a lot will depend on who they draft with the picks. It opens up a lot of possibilities in the draft and free agency signs.
  16. He's the luckiest guy to ever manage in baseball. Last year he didn't want Willson because...checks notes...he might play too hard for his next contract.
  17. Maybe a little, but if the ball gets above the board in its flight path it's going to get knocked down. It has more of an effect for hard-line drive-type home runs.
  18. Correa is Dylan Maples from a different mother. Incredible stuff that he cannot command.
  19. How much of an impact on the trade down will Stafford's availability have on the Bears? https://www.wfxrtv.com/sports/sports-illustrated/e47909ba/report-rams-calling-teams-about-trading-matthew-stafford/#:~:text=The%20Rams%20have%20reportedly%20been,%E2%80%9Clove%20to%20trade%20him.%E2%80%9D
  20. Yeah, I read that too. Any guesses who the 7 are? Assuming none are QBs, I'd think: Will Anderson, Devon Witherspoon, Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Christian Gonzalez, Peter Skoronski, and depending on how they feel about the recent off-field stuff, Jalen Carter. I know they met with Bijan Robinson too, and he's as good of a talent as there is in this draft, but IDK if they'd consider him #1 overall. Drafting an OG at 1 overall would sure be something I was physically at the draft when Orlando Pace was taken 1.1. I also met him the night before the draft at the ESPN Zone (is that still a bar) at the bar and introduced myself as an OSU alum. He was just there with about 4 friends hanging out and having a drink. He already knew he was going to be drafted first. That is one of my only brushes with fame.
  21. lol "Although Blasingame did not have a rushing attempt or a reception in the 2022 season, he played 174 snaps – 18 percent – for the NFL’s No. 1 rushing offense. Blasingame also was on the field for 215 special-teams plays during the 2022 season." https://www.al.com/sports/2023/03/former-alabama-prep-standout-staying-with-chicago-on-two-year-deal.html
  22. I’m not likely to listen so anyone want give Cliff’s notes?
  23. I don't think it would take a 1st round pick, but I don't know.
