    I agree. They are built to be a consistently mediocre team. I don't think there is a lot of upside or downside variance from any player.

    The starting pitching is going to be roughed up. How much stress it puts on the bullpen is going to be a big factor on their overall record. This is a team that is relying on pitching to contact and good defense. They are not going to consistently score a lot of runs.

    I grew up about 80 miles East of Chicago in SW Michigan. We had an awesome TV antenna so we pulled in WGN. I grew up watching Tommy Skillering, Ray Ranor, Bozo, Family Classics with Frazier Thomas, and of course Cubs baseball. Some of my earliest memories are watching baseball with my dad. Jack Brickhouse and Lou Beadrueau would flip doing games on TV and radio for half the game. During the mid-70s the Cubs were known for starting hot and having the June swoon. My favorite player was Bill Madlock although he was only with the Cubs for a short period. I wore his number and had sweat bands just like him. I remember that I cried like a baby when I found out he got traded (the Cubs have always had bad owners). I can remember 84. We'd be in football practice and have one of the managers monitoring the Cubs game on the radio. It was a crazy year. I still have the Chicago Tribune from when they clinched the division. Heart break is a big part of being a Cubs fan and it has prepared me well for life. The Ricketts have really taken a toll on my love of the Cubs, but I can't quit them. I'm a die hard.

    Love the title as that was the opening song for the games on WGN that year. Everything is relative, in comparison to the past five or so years that top of the lineup looks great. In comparison to what it should be given the Cubs resources, not so much.

    Seems like a good return for McKinstry. Put him in the pitch lab and see what they can do with him. I guess that they think they can coax some usability out of him and he's still young.

    My bold prediction is that the Cubs finish a few games over .500, Nico cements himself as the best hitter on the team. Not bold, but this team is built to be mediocre while they wait and see what percolates on the farm. I suppose a bold prediction would be that they are a lot worse or better than mediocre. I don't think Happ is going to be as good as last year, but Bellinger will be better. Swanson is going to have a difficult start to the year, but at the end, he'll be right around his career norms, maybe +6 HRs.

    They have a glaring need on both sides of the LOS. Kind of a no-brainer here.

    I’m just happy we don’t have to worry if the Michael Hermosillo’s of the baseball world are making the team. At least they have a major league roster of 26 players.

    Seriously, if Stroud is there (he won't be), the Bears still have to draft the best OL/DL player on their draft board at 9. Don't give me any [expletive] about value. There will be multiple players in the draft at OL/DL who will have plenty enough value to justify picking them at 9. They have the 9th pick and then drop all the way down to 53 for the next pick. It would be malpractice.

    It should be a multiple value judgment, BBA + current needs. You could have a player at the spot you are picking who is clearly the best player on your draft board, but he isn't the best fit for the current needs of the team. In a perfect scenario, you would be able to trade the pick and get some extra value and get the player who at that pick, is the BPA and meets needs. That perfect scenario doesn't exist in the NFL draft due to other teams' needs and values. I want them to draft the best player available that meets the current needs of the team. A wide receiver who is BPA is great, but it doesn't appear to fit the needs of the Bears. So you overdraft a guy who might be available at some later pick that you don't have, what is the problem?

    Given their needs, it should surprise no one when he drafts an OL or DL. If he doesn't, he's too smart to be a GM in the NFL.
