  1. Feel like singing? I did sing it! My boys went all dressed up in Cub outfits to school today....its the hap happiest day of the year.... Opening Day is a brazillion times better than today. Yes and No. Yes, the season has started for real, but no, PACR means our long national nightmare is finally over. Finally baseball is in the air.
  2. I agree. There are a lot of big names of the past on there. Where has the time gone?
  3. Their pitching alone will give them 60 wins, especially if they can pull off that trade for Crede. Trading for Crede doesn't sound like much, but he would be replacing Rich Aurilla... Have you seen their offense? Answer: no, because it doesn't exist. Dave Roberts is the Starting LEFT fielder. Vizquel has nothing, and I mean nothing, left in the tank. Have you heard of Dan Ortmeier? Well, he's the starting first baseman. Ray Durham hit .218 with a .295 on-base. They will be terrible, especially so when you consider the strength of their division. And adding Joe Crede with his .305 OBP will not help anything.
  4. No no no no no this is obvious. Jim Hendry Will sign one Rondell White of all those players. He did, after all, play on the 2001 Cubs, and John Lieber probably needs a buddy.
  5. Considering the player Bako was in 2003, I am absolutely shocked that he still has a job 5 years later. Apparently people don't pay attention.
  6. It depends on what kind of fan you are. If you are a Yuppie or Lincoln Park Trixie-type just looking to have fun, then yes, choose the Cubs. If you are a fan like many of us who will watch every pitch of every game and pour you heart into this team only to get crapped on for years, don't pick the Cubs. It seems like you should be born into being a die-hard Cubs fan. Why would you ever pick it?
  7. 3000 hits = lock for the writers. Also in his favor is that Bill James thought very highly of him in the historical abstract.
  8. Andy Pettite a hall of famer? really?
  9. I certainly hope not. He's definitely one of the most overrated players of our era. i'd replace andruw jones with torii hunter in this paragraph and agree 100%. I disagree. Andruw may be declining/overrated now, but he was legitimately outstanding, perhaps the best ever, in the outfield for a while. He's also not a horrible hitter, already having 368 career homers and a high of 51. He has an OPS+ of 113 for his career, which isn't incredible but isn't horrible. For reference, Brooks Robinson has a career OPS+ of only 104 and is in the HOF.
  10. http://javascript:void(playMedia2({w_id:'580945',w:'2007/open/tp/archive06/062907_milchn_ramirez_gwhr_tp_350.wmv',pid: 'mlb_tp',gid: '2007/06/29/milmlb-chnmlb-1',vid: '7758',mid: '200706292056556',cid: 'mlb',fid: 'mlb_tp400',v:'2'})) That's from mlb.com, with video. I'm not sure if you need to be a subscriber or not.
  11. Without looking, does anyone know who the youngest ERA champ in the history of the American League is?
  12. I think the more relevant question is this: Can the Cubs as currently constructed beat the Mets in the NLCS after this trade?
  13. Probably just because it's a tangible sign that the season is one step closer.Yep, it's more symbolic than anything else. There's nothing specifically about pitchers and catchers reporting that gets me excited, but it means we're one step closer to spring training games, followed by the regular season. I look at it kind of like boiling a pot of water. Pitchers and Catchers report- The oven is turned on. Individual Tickets go on sale- Some small bubbles start to appear. First Spring Training game- Many bubbles are starting to appear. Opening day- The water in the pot is officially boiled. So that makes this part of the year the time when you have the munchies.
  14. We all know about the dog days of August for the players, especially now with the greenie ban. But what about us fans right now? The weeks between the cubs convention and pitchers and catchers reporting should be the dog days of January. I was so itching for some baseball around the cubs convention despite the fact that I didn't even go. I've been stuck watching this dvd set of great Cubs performances and I'll be honest, it isn't really anything like an adequate substitute There isn't even cubs news anymore. The only news of the day is 1 fewer day (As of Saturday its 18 days I believe). Am I the only person that feels this way?
  15. That was my question. I was kinda disappointed he didn't go into more detail though. It seemed like he picked it to answer to sway our thinking about Samardjiza, but I threw that in there just to make a point that nothing is set in stone. It would have been nice if he elaborated on *why* he likes Dempster, but it was the last question answered in the chat.
  16. The Cubs as a team had the third highest defensive efficiency in the MLB, .712, behind only the Blue Jays and the BoSox. The defense converted balls in play into outs at a very high rate, so of course all the BABIPs for our pitcher would be slightly better than normal. http://baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=204024 Now as to the question about whether that's a fluke...I can't say. Aramis Ramirez was apparently a +20 3b, which is quite out of line with everything else he's ever done.
  17. Piazza I assume
  18. One more. Who is the active leader in bb/9, meaning who has the fewest? I wouldn't have guessed this. Hint:
  19. Starts as a hitter or a pitcher? I only ask because I was wondering what the longest stretch of abs was without a walk.
  20. I think I know yours, is it The pitcher who last started both ends is definitely on your list.
  21. Louisiana Lightning was pretty good. I don't think that's even the best pitcher season of the 70s. 1972 Phillies: 59-97. Note that this is only a 156 game schedule because of the ST strike, or they would have lost 100. Now, Steve Carlton for that team: Record: 27-10. That's 46% of his team's wins, almost half. 41 starts 346 innings 30 cgs 8 shutouts 310 strikeouts .993 whip 1.97 era 6.68 hits/9
  22. I have one, hopefully people don't know it. Who was the last man to start both ends of a doubleheader? Hint below
  23. Meh. 5th starter numbers. High 4th if he meets the optimistic there. They're definitely worthy of 3.5 million in this market.
  24. Cpatt was also older at every level than Felix Pie.
