  1. I'm pessimistic because we still have significant flaws. Are people actually convinced we are a very good team because we spent so much money? We're decent, our pitching isn't great and potentially could get very bad if Z's control is like this years. The offense will probably be very streaky because we are hoping Lee is fully recovered, and Soriano will put us over the top. I don't think Soriano can or will because of his lack of ability to get on base beyond one year before FAs. Sorry I can't get into the Cubs are "good enough," you shoot for the best.
  2. If they fall short, spending will be cut. But either way I'm a fan of a young team, not an oldish, mediocre, expensive team. We aren't even that good, and we just blew like 250 million on contracts. I wouldn't care if we spent WISELY, but we don't, and won't.
  3. I really hate these contracts. Wells has a .288/.336/.492 career line after having 2 years in a row of .269/.320/.463 and .272/.337/.472. His best years are always years where the lineup is very strong around him, back when Delgado was there and then this year when they were one of the best offensive teams. Bad contract.
  4. Someone who cherishes having a good batting average as way more important than stupid guys who walk alot? Someone who believes catching the ball, not striking out, not walking, stealing bases, and therefore being "disruptive" is the real way to win a game? What is the difference between this "baseball guy" with someone who also uses stats?
  5. Harben could be a sick reliever for us in a couple years. He was one of the Twins best arms, and they are LOADED.
  6. Alot, if theres one thing you never count on a pitcher for, its injuries. ESPECIALLY with someone with as many warning labels as Z. And about the control being easy to fix, tell that to Victor Zambrano, and to an extent, Kerry Wood. Z goes all out on every pitch, does it with mechanics no one calls pretty, puts it on weight easily, and has back problems. Again alot of guys look like horses, but there are guys who do that for a while and then break down in their early 30' (Colon). Put it this way, if Z was on someone else, and was becoming a FA, would you not build your negative arguments around all those risks I just listed?
  7. True, which makes the walk rate going up even more worrisome A sign of him being overworked? Much more likely than a sign of guaranteed health and dominance. And as far as Z = Maddux, how likely is it that Z becomes one of the top 5 pitchers of all time? Cause Maddux is right behind Clemens in my mind. I think the walk rate is a direct result of Z going for more strikeouts than being happy inducing ground balls. i.e. he's trying to throw more unhittable pitches than ones that can be put in play. Thats a bad thing isn't it? Getting a K isn't as important as getting an out. And the fact that it's causing his walk rates to rise past very bad levels is not good. It's forcing him to throw more pitches. Which is going to lead to him getting tired. Which is going to lead to him adjusting his mechanics to try to make up for it. Which leads to potentially straining a part on his arm. Considering his already violent mechanics, back problems, and weight problems, a serious injury could be right around the corner. It's all conjecture, but theres more saying its likely than there is saying its unlikely.

  9. I've made my thoughts on Z well known. Before this offseason, most of his value to the Cubs could have been in a trade to the Dodgers or Angels (for example) for young arms/bats. I still think the same thing, because he is heading in the opposite direction of everything I want him to be except for K'ing guys. The walks are getting bad. Z was one of the best pitchers in baseball this year. Unforunately, a guy walking almost 5 guys per 9 isn't going to be an ace for a very long time.
  10. Perfect game = sick. They also have video for alot of the top guys.
  11. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/column.aspx?sport=MLB&columnid=2&articleid=27371 Theres a link to some potential non-tenders on RotoWorld. Some serious guys to look at there including; Lane, Ensberg, Broussard, Wilkerson, Werth, Tsao, Lopez, and Giles. Discuss.
  12. Don't laugh at Erstad, Finley, and Williams. They are veteran players who go all out, and KNOW HOW TO WIN. Do the Cubs know how to win? I think not. These guys can teach us, and they have the rings to prove it.
  13. Can I ask, out of curiousity, why do people like Zito so much? A high walk, declining K rate, fly ball pitcher. Sure he won the Cy Young 4 years ago and he's young, but a few years ago he threw harder, walked less guys, K'd more guys, and his curveball actually got guys out consistently. Don't see whats so amazing about him now. He's still one of my favorite pitchers to watch, but I wouldn't like him for the money he'd ask for.
  14. Yet another horrible deal by Hendry. He's so dedicated to destroying this franchise to MAYBE save his job.
  15. My sentiments exactly. Baldelli to me is nothing special. Church could probably match or even best his production for much, much less.
  16. Sweet just to see the Cubs being mentioned with Church. I've been wanting Church/Kearns since my scout.com days. Think it'd be possible for Church AND Kearns? Or is I getting greedy?
  17. Is that what foward thinking is? Sorry, I've been a Cubs fan so long I forgot what it is.
  18. "Taking your chances" in baseball nowadays takes ALOT of money. Maybe I'm just a pessimist about the Cubs, but Z certainly has a ton of red flags.
  19. If Prior is pitching like that, no way we trade him. Thats the real Mark Prior, not the guy we've seen the past couple years. Actually, trading Z is growing on me. I was looking at John Smoltz's career the other day, and the year after his walks jumped up significantly, he went down and pitched 134 innings. I'll say it again, but the Cubs have to seriously watch and weigh the risks of signing Zambrano to a track. I really want to eat crow on this one, because he's one of the best young pitchers in baseball, but theres just so many red flags. If Z could net us Miguel Cabrera or someone young and very good like that, I'd do it in a second.
  20. Who are other teams prospects that might be worth something for us?
  21. It kicks soooo much ass to see Rowell from NJ, then two guys really close to me at Seton Hall Prep. NJ never had so many guys being look at as first round picks in such a long time. Hopefully none of those guys are like JM Gold.
  22. Man, Choi was kicking ass in FLA to the tune of .270/.388/.495. Since then he couldn't buy consistent ABs. I don't even know why. A 25 year old with that line should have gotten more ABs, but Jim Tracy never liked him and that was that. Remember when he hit like 6 HRs in 3 games or something and after that stretch was benched? Anyway, hopefully Tampa allows him to play. He can still be a good hitter, but hasn't really been allowed to his whole career. I have faith in you Hee Seop.
