  1. for something that doesn't make a big difference in terms of run production, people sure do care about who's batting where.
  2. haha, vitters is going to be such a bust
  3. this is a poor assessment.
  4. me too \:D/ i also had vandy in the elite 8 ](*,)
  5. you're going to be flushing as much money down the toilet per year on a player like pierre or drew as you are on soriano until the last couple of years of his contract.
  6. that's not true at all; nobody with an eqa around .290 to .300 is a "decent enough complimentary player." that more accurately describes a guy like matt murton (.270-.275 eqa.) plus soriano is a good fielder, and murton is average at best. i agree that soriano is not the superstar that he is made out to be, but his offensive value is not far off from aramis ramirez, who i don't think anyone considers to be a "decent enough complimentary player."
  7. i didn't mention the yankees, and the red sox' budget isn't as unlimited as you think it is. they do have a very high payroll; however, they would not be able to afford all the guys like manny, j.d. drew (not worth anywhere close to $14M per year), ortiz ($13M per), lowell ($12.5M per), varitek ($10M per), beckett ($10M per), lugo ($9M per) and daisuke ($8.5M/$17M per, depending on how you think about it) is because they also have guys like youkilis, pedroia, ellsbury, buchholz and several bullpen arms who are productive players at or near the major league minimum. same with the dodgers, who are more on par with the cubs as far as revenue/payroll. the pierre contract is abominable; they're also flushing money down the toilet on nomar and jason schmidt. but again, the dodgers have mined very good prospects out of their farm system like matt kemp, russell martin, jonathan broxton, andre ethier, james loney, chad billingsley, andy laroche and (soon) clayton kershaw. so they can handle the bad contracts that EVERY good team inevitably has, because they also have the ability to generate their own young talent. you'd be hard-pressed to find a team in the top 10 payrolls that doesn't have a contract that is either bad or has become bad as a player aged.
  8. headphones, man.
  9. gus is announcing temple-moo, that's the one everyone should be watching. len elmore is the master of overreaction, btw. he was talking about how raymar morgan was having his was and he was surprised that dionte christmas wasn't getting more involved in the offense - at 18 minutes of the first half.
  10. oh yeah, he is pretty much a walking advertisement for the steroid era
  11. nice job, heat
  12. oh yeah, i also have davidson over g'town.
  13. ](*,) everyone keeps calling this an upset. davidson is FAVORED over gonzaga, and miami is a one point favorite over st. mary's. if you're going to start talking about your upsets, go with 11 seeds or higher winning. 8-9 games are a toss-up and 10 seeds, if i remember correctly, win over 40 percent of their games. my upsets: cornell over stanford san diego over uconn villanova over clemson vandy over kansas pitt over memphis those are the ones i can remember off the top of my head.
  14. poorly paid weather nerds "poorly paid" and "weather nerds" usually go hand-in-hand
  15. No, but I sure was expecting around 25. Now it seems like we're hoping for 15 or so. As Soul mentioned above, where is he going to be in 2-3 years from now? Scary...in a bad way. Hopefully we're able to unload him on some poor sap before his contract becomes an albatross. Although it'll probably cost us a boatload of good, young farm talent before someone agrees to take him. And then we can all thank Jim Hendry. the cubs have enough revenue where they can afford to have a bad contract. manny ramirez sure wasn't worth $20M last year, and he won't be worth that much this year either. gary matthews jr and torii hunter will be badly overpaid by the angels. juan pierre's contract is a train wreck. but all these teams are in contention. even if you're a big market team, you have to be able to develop talent. that's the key, talent development, and not having too many contracts where the guy's performance is far below what he's being paid to do.
  16. true dat. anyway, i am all for trading roberts, but with this caveat. you improve the team most by trading for roberts, and then giving some PT at SS to either roberts or derosa. we've already got a below average glove at SS in theriot; derosa would certainly be below-average at short, but you'd be picking up 15 to 20 points in eqa, which would easily make up for whatever marginal loss in fielding you suffer by going from theriot to derosa. it'd be especially smart to play derosa at short when the more fly ball-heavy pitchers (lilly, hill) are on the mound.
  17. I say screw fairness. they put up the same numbers, virtually. roberts can steal bases, but why trade away assets to acquire something you already have? that's unfair to the organization. roberts walks more, has more doubles power and a little more home run power, steals a lot of bases and is good at it from a sb/cs perspective, and is a better defensive player. they're not virtually the same player; if roberts plays like he did in 2006 and derosa plays like he has the last two years, then they're about the same. if roberts plays like he did in 2005 and 2007, then he's better by a pretty good margin.
  18. Group A: Ryan Howard Group B: Ryan Braun, Mark Teixeira Group C: Travis Hafner, Nick Swisher, Aramis Ramirez Group D: Chase Utley, Jason Bay, Adam LaRoche, Ryan Zimmerman, Jack Cust WC: Rick Ankiel... guh
  19. Here's my team in the AccuWeather 2008 fantasy baseball league. 14 teams (watered down!), stat categories are: Offense: R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, K, OPS Defense: W, L, CG, SHO, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB My team: C Brian McCann 1B Carlos Delgado 2B Dustin Pedroia 3B Ryan Braun (good thing defense doesn't count) SS Troy Tulowitzki (too bad defense doesn't count) OF Grady Sizemore OF Corey Hart OF Jermaine Dye (kinda pissed about this one, I wanted Rickie Weeks instead of him, but accidentally had "I'm away" clicked) Util Frank Thomas BN J.D. Sabathia SP Tim Lincecum RP Mariano Rivera RP Rafael Soriano P Rich Hill P Derek Lowe P Kerry Wood BN Hiroki Kuroda
  20. yes but as long as he plays on a team that isn't filled with a lineup that hits like starting pitchers, he'll be a very valuable player.
  21. yeah i was all ready to pick tennessee to go to the final four as a 2 seed, and then they paired against unc. butler as a 7 is tough too. they really have a right to complain about the path they got.
  22. Nah, I put them in over Wisconsin in one set of picks. They'll beat K-State(they have the athletes to slow Beasley/Walker, and Frank Martin is inept), and they're athletic enough to give Wisconsin trouble. Bukie's right about Wisconsin in Detroit though. Picking a winner out of KU and Georgetown/Wisconsin is extremely tough. well, kansas lost to vandy and georgetown lost to davidson, so it sounds pretty easy to me.
  23. It's full. However, you're welcome to join the other league I'm running. You and anyone else who reads this message. It'll be same format at the other league, although I have no earthly idea when I'm going to hold the draft. I know for a fact it'll be sometime in March, but that's all I can tell you. There's a ton of spots left. League ID 88460 password: baseball C Jorge Posada 1B Carlos Pena 2B Chone Figgins 3B David Wright SS Rafael Furcal OF Grady Sizemore OF Shane Victorino OF Matt Kemp Util Nick Swisher BN Troy Glaus BN Justin Upton BN The Riot SP C.C. Sabathia SP Tim Lincecum RP Francisco Rodriguez RP Rafael Soriano P Rich Hill P Clay Buchholz P Mark Buehrle BN Matt Garza BN Andrew Miller sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet
  24. that's because all of the guys who go try out marshall's system are basically non-prospects who are looking to try something different to be able to play in college or indy ball, maybe get a shot in the pros. when you've got a bunch of guys coming to you whose fastballs are topping out in the 70s, there's only so much you can do. eventually talent wins out.
