    this is fun, therrien and babcock are apparently trying to out-whine each other when it comes to the officiating. which i don't think has been bad at all, by the way, at least in this round.

    pretty sure that rich hill wouldn't get as much rope to hang himself as marquis got last night. btw the cubs can win with marquis - they can win the division with a lousy 5th starter and then leave him off the playoff roster. see 2003 cubs, 2007 cubs.

    nice start for the roidless rob hernandez. the suspension may not be a terrible thing - he got to work on things with the instructionals, and the inning count won't be too high on his young arm.

    lineup looks fine, though i'd have gone with derosa then johnson. but johnson does hit LHP well.

    joba was about as inefficient as possible tonight, which is ironic given that he was up against probably the most efficient pitcher in baseball over the past five years.

    i would like theriot, soto and derosa to get more rest than they have been getting. soto's career high in games is 118, and that was last season. you're paying blanco $2.7M to be the backup, and he is a solid defensive catcher who handles the staff well. theriot was dreadful in the last month to month and a half of last year, and could wear down again. derosa's numbers have declined in the second half of each of the last two seasons and he's 32 now. given that cedeno isn't much of a downgrade from theriot and fontenot isn't much of a downgrade from derosa, the cubs are in a good position to keep those guys fresh for when we hopefully make the playoffs.

    jamie moyer wasn't "mediocre" for much of his career. terry mulholland was the name that jumped to mind for me.

    my nightmare scenario is the cubs drafting casey kelly as a ss, or anthony hewitt. so i fully expect one of these things to happen.

    bill hall, the card-carrying cub killer with the .753 OPS against us. people seem to have no idea what a cub-killer is... instead it's like every guy who has played a large number of games against the cubs has done something good against us, so he's a "cub killer" real cub killers: pat burrell (career line of .305/.426/.576 vs the cubs, against .259/.370/.487 overall) and adam dunn (.262/.402/.610 career vs cubs with 36 (!!) home runs, against .249/.382/.521 overall).

    my biggest complaint with lou is that he manages too many games with the short-term goal in mind of winning that game - see soto, theriot, marmol, wood overuse - and loses track of the big picture, which is keeping players fresh for the stretch run and the playoffs. i sure hope the cubs win the division by 10 games and can give some of the guys a break, because it sure doesn't look like lou is going to do this over the course of a season.

    i dunno. he is a pretty damn good hitter, one of the best in the league... most people don't realize it though, because he plays in a small market with a cavernous home park.

    define "for real" capable of a .325/.407/.392 line over the whole season? i sure doubt it. capable of something like .290/.355/.370? yeah, i think so. especially if lou actually uses his brain (unlikely) and uses the team's wealth of middle infield depth to spell theriot a little more so that he doesn't wear down by the end of the season.

    During the 2008 draft of my league with friends from work, I selected Kerry Wood in the 16th round. This selection was met with widespread mocking and derision, as people were aware of my Cub-fandom, as well as Kerry's less than stellar health record. The selection of Wood came a round after picks like a.j. pierzynski, todd jones, curt schilling, jeremy guthrie, freddy sanchez and felipe lopez. even if wood's arm were to fall off tomorrow, i've gotten more out of him in 2 months than other people will out of their late-round clowns all year. not counting shawn marcum (who is eligible as a reliever but is really a starter), kerry wood trails only mariano rivera (what team's he on? oh yeah, mine) among relief pitchers in the yahoo scoring system. suck it, accu-league.

    i'm pretty happy to be in 363rd place, considering that my pitchers have a horrendous total of -62.

    we won't win with marmol pitching 110 innings this year, i will go with that prediction.
