    Just like in 2003 the 2003 cubs were heavily built on pitching (much of which got hurt) and their only young regulars were patterson, ramirez, and choi in a platoon. the average position player on the 2015 cubs is 5 years younger than the average position player on the 2003 cubs.

    awesome. would've been interesting if he'd caught that. he was in no position to make a strong throw, but bryant had to cheat down the line a little bit in case it dropped or in case gordon fielded it on a hop. guessing bryant would've tagged and tried to score. maybe escobar flips to gordon, who throws home?

    i feel like there have been a lot of those plays where a cub has probably been safe, but the call was out and there's not quite enough evidence to overturn.

    flyers get another second round pick from the hawks from the kimmo timonen trade! \:D/ go hawks in the finals. would be great to see kimmo go out a winner.

    The sooner he can get his mojo back and we can get rid of Herrera or Baxter or some other crappy bench player the better. i agree, but herrera basically doesn't play. there's no point in calling up alcantara so that he can make one plate appearance per week. if he's called up, he would need to see spot starts at 2b and cf. he's been a lot worse against RHP in his major league career, which doesn't make him an ideal platoon guy with fowler and russell, but i'm not sure if that's just a small sample size thing for mendy.

    Yeah 300 appears to be a really conservative estimate.

    lake, montero, and who, herrera for the bottom of the 9th? optimism is low.

    almora is 2-2 with a home run and a walk. his overall numbers are pedestrian, but his walk rate is up from last year (though in fairness, it would be hard to walk much less than last year) and his strikeout rate is down, so he seems to be showing improvement.

    cards have 6 runs and 3 lob. i checked their season stats on b-r and lo and behold, they're hitting remarkably well with runners on base versus bases empty. seems to be a trend for them.

    i'm also trying to figure out what the braves' angle is here. according to reports, they're giving up 3 minor leaguers, and i would assume they're giving up the better minor leaguers since uribe is better than callaspo. are they trying to contend for a wild card spot this season? hoping that uribe turns it around in the next 2 months so they can flip him at the deadline? but if the minor leaguers in this deal are pretty non-descript, then the deal makes plenty of sense for them, simply because they're acquiring the more valuable asset in exchange for peanuts.

    this seems odd given that callaspo had a grand total of -0.9 fWAR in 2013-14 whereas uribe had 8.6 fWAR during that span. they've both been garbage this year, though, but uribe seems like the more astute buy low candidate.
