    almost everything kruk says is total BS so i don't see why these stories would be any different. the 1993 phillies (schilling, kruk, mitch williams) are a plague on baseball broadcasting.

    lo and behold, lester throws the first pitch to votto in the exact same location (just outside) that desclafani pitched baxter, and it's also called a strike.

    I admit that watching a baseball zoom into an imaginary box is hard work, so I can forgive an ump for missing a call within an inch of the strike zone. Calling a strike two inches off the plate, however, is inexcusable. well good thing the pitch was 0.6 inches off the plate, as the graphic posted in this thread clearly shows.

    it wasn't all that close? it was a half inch outside. if we're going to praise montero and ross for getting borderline pitches called as strikes, then we really can't piss and moan when other teams do the same thing.

    meh, it's too close to take with two strikes if the catcher sets up there, the pitcher hits the spot and the catcher frames it well. they also set it up well with the previous pitch, which was a little too far outside. as the post above says, that pitch gets called a strike 40% of the time against LH batters, so until robot umps come to mlb, it may be a good idea to swing in that spot.

    no it doesn't. people jumped to conclusions too early about the draft last year when all the signs were that the cubs were going to bring in at least one overslot. now all the signs are that the cubs will bring in at least one overslot. they're clearly going to spend as much as they can without losing a first round pick, since that's what they've done every year since the new rules came in. That's not entirely true either. They left close to 300K on the table in 2013. Not saying I blame them, it's tough to know who's going to be out there for you, and to nail the number you can get each of your draftees signed for. i wonder how much of that was earmarked for daniel poncedeleon.

    no it doesn't. people jumped to conclusions too early about the draft last year when all the signs were that the cubs were going to bring in at least one overslot. now all the signs are that the cubs will bring in at least one overslot. they're clearly going to spend as much as they can without losing a first round pick, since that's what they've done every year since the new rules came in. as an aside, i wonder if there would be a team which will see a particular draft year as being really strong, and just draft all the overslot players who fall. i kind of doubt it, just because you'd have to pay 100% luxury tax on all of those signings, plus sacrificing your next two first round picks. rules are just too punitive to go with a strategy like that.

    Who is we? Also, this year's draft looks very little like last year's considering they had already picked Sands, Steele and Cease at this point last year (with a much bigger pool to work with). obviously the later draft slot gives the cubs fewer options to walk away with prizes like sands, steele and cease. but it's kind of dumb to complain about it being a vanilla draft, since they still haven't picked anybody who looks like a big overslot, and the last few picks clearly suggest that there will be at least one big overslot signing to be drafted tomorrow.

    chris pieters signed as a pitching bonus baby a couple of years ago, but i see that now he's playing right field in the DSL. his control was atrocious so i guess they pulled the plug on him as a pitcher.

    I see we haven't learned much from last year, when lots of people complained about three safe college picks to start the draft and wondered what the hell the Cubs were thinking.

    Why would who we draft in the second round have any effect on how we handle our current CF? it's not one specific player, it's that - of the cubs' top 10 prospects - at least 5 (almora, mckinney, happ, dewees, jimenez) are outfielders, and then there are a number of other options (hannemann, zagunis, szczur, maybe alcantara if he stays in center, schwarber if he can't catch) as well. if soler is in RF then there are only two outfield spots for the talent coming through the pipeline. not that you avoid signing a player like fowler for a few years, but if you've got a lot of cheap young talent at positions on the field, you may be more likely to sign a stopgap CF (like what we're doing with coghlan/denorfia right now) rather than making a long-term commitment to a free agent who will require a 4+ year deal.

    It means nothing. If they get a deal they like they'll gladly sign Fowler to a 4-5 year extension with the intent to trade him off before the end of the contract. yeah i think that is the most likely outcome. there's nobody who looks ready to take over yet, and i can't see fowler signing a 2 year contract. so they'd have to sign him for a few years, and if somebody like almora or hannemann or dewees looks ready to be a major league regular in CF, then you hope that fowler is playing well enough to get a decent return without eating any money. i would also think, given that we now are overflowing with outfield prospects, that schwarber is a catcher unless he proves that he cannot be an adequate defender there.

    i wonder what this could mean for fowler. i like what he's done, but he's a free agent after this year and there seems to be a [expletive] load of outfield options - which may include schwarber if he doesn't stick at catcher, bryant if he gets shifted off 3b, etc. i wouldn't think that they will want to tie up CF for a few years.

    dewees hit .340/.427/.473 in the cape cod league last summer. guess we like guys who can hit in that league. kiley mcdaniel ranked him #35 on his draft board. BP had him going #31 to the giants in their last mock draft.
