  1. he must've seen my post about wanting more power and patience than hendrick.
  2. i love bears, they're hilarious. except for the killer bears, they're not so cool.
  3. Clearly Fielder simply saw Parra as a 6ft hot dog and could not hold back any longer. http://www.theonion.com/content/files/images/Burger-Hotdog-3-R.jpg
  4. there's no way that certain teams (yankees/red sox) would agree to that. and frankly it would be unfair to them.
  5. kendrick is a great hitter for average, but i'd like to see more power and patience than he offers. he has 27 walks in 226 games, which is pretty damn bad.
  6. WTF??? cashner didn't have control issues like this in college.
  7. and he played in a pitcher's era, too. sulley, i understand what you are getting at with brooks robinson, but i don't think there is a need to disparage robinson or suggest that his support of santo is out of guilt. he was a marvelous fielder; BP has him at 286 FRAR, or basically saving one run for every 10 games he played. that's really awesome. they have ron santo at 60 FRAR in 2243 games; he was hurt by a couple of poor years late in his career, but the stat does have him well above average for several years in a row. in fact, he has a WARP3 of 10 or above in six consecutive years of his career; that's a peak comparable to that of A-Rod and better than george brett's peak string of productivity. that's not to say that those guys are hall of famers, but rather that santo is clearly a hall of famer.
  8. If he stays healthy I think he has a chance. The start of his career reminds me of Maddux in the sense that they were both above average, on the verge of stardom for a few years before finally having a big breakthrough year (1992 for Maddux, this year for Zambrano). Maddux kept building on that; if Z can do the same the sky's the limit. his ERA wasn't great in 1991 but he was already trending toward being awesome at that point. his whip was down to 1.13. unless he really makes a quantum leap, zambrano will never have good enough control to stack up with the peak that maddux had.
  9. dumbest organization in pro sports? dumbest question in recent NSBB history? he pitched a good game, but like i said, there were financial reasons behind the Twins' decision to leave him in the minors. You could also call Tampa Bay idiots for keeping Evan Longoria at AAA to start the year. the point is, it's ridiculous to suggest that a small-market team that regularly contends for division titles is the dumbest organization in pro sports when you have the baltimore orioles, atlanta hawks, l.a. clippers, minnesota timberwolves, houston texas, arizona cardinals, atlanta falcons, new york islanders, columbus blue jackets, and plenty more terribly-run organizations that rarely do anything right.
  10. http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/bp/1409616.html http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/neyer_rob/1514118.html The Cub Reporter's argument of Santo's HoF credentials I think that almost everyone on this board believes that Santo is a Hall of Famer. But what can us Cub fans do to support his candidacy? Is there a way to send materials that will reach the Veterans' Committee? All I know is that I want to make the five hour drive to Cooperstown next summer, to wear my Ron Santo jersey as I watch him being enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
  11. ernie banks is mr. cub, but i don't think there is anyone on the planet who loves the cubs more than ron santo.
  12. yeah i was getting interested in him but he has fallen apart like a cheap suit. 20 homers and 136 hits allowed in 113.2 innings, which is waaaaay too hittable.
  13. i guess i hadn't looked at contreras' stats lately... his home run rate was really low earlier in the year, but i guess he's been throwing some BP lately. as for danks, i'm not convinced that he's as good as he has been this year. his GB/FB ratio was about 1.5 early in the year, but in july it was even, and he gave up 5 home runs on the month. he's better than he showed last year, but as he gets up toward and past 150 innings, i think that he'll struggle to get as much sink on the ball and he's going to give up more hard hit balls and home runs. just a hunch.
  14. i'm happy, but that's because i was born in minnesota and my best friend is a twins fan, so they're my american league team to root for. otherwise i wouldn't give a crap.
  15. oh man i wish i had watched this on mlb.tv when they archive it, i suggest watching the reed johnson home run through the end of the game. priceless in its bitterness and despair.
  16. HAHAHA bitter pirates face from the end of the game. guy 1: "We're gonna have to hear that song again, John. And you're right, it's annoying." guy 2: "Very annoying. Unless we can a couple bloops and a blast." guy 1: "We'll try to get out of here as quickly as we can, so you don't have to listen to it, folks." guy 2: "Yep. It's loud. And it's annoying."
  17. WE NEED THIS AUDIO. their second home run call was right out of the hawk harrelson playbook... complete silence. didn't say anything as the ball was hit and soriano rounded the bases.
  18. haha the pirates announcers were talking about how burnett could get reed out and then be in position for his first win since 2004. "and here he is trying to get johnson to wrap this up and set up the scenario that... oh no. no! NO!!!"
  19. their outfield defense is also really bad now. quentin is below average, griffey isn't even average for a corner outfielder, so he's terrible in CF, and dye is okay in RF.
  20. People forgot about this because they'd overperformed in the first half, but that pitching staff was supposed to be pretty weak this year. But danks and floyd have pitched better than expected, and contreras has also thrown pretty well. but a look at their peripherals suggests that there has been a fair amount of good luck involved - anomalously-low home run rates for fly ball pitchers, and good fortune on balls in play. Since the ASB, the white sox pitching has the following line... not including the 12 runs that KC hung on them today: 5.39 ERA, 122.0 IP, 134 H, 83 R, 73 ER, 41 BB, 90 K, .275 BAA, .815 OPSa, 1.52 WHIP they can still make the playoffs obviously, but it might be in spite of their pitching. their lack of frontline starters also makes them a pretty big underdog in the playoffs.
  21. that's like a 2006 rich hill start... well except for the 3 hits and 1 run.
  22. we used to do this in high school swim meets, swim a really, really slow relay to let one of our best swimmers recover from his relay swim as he was in the next event. i was in that slow relay my freshman year and would swim something like a 1:30 for a 50 yard backstroke, then later in the meet i would swim the 100 back in like 1:05. other coaches used to get so pissed at us, but hey, it helped us win and wasn't against the rules.
  23. SLAM. The Angels are good. and that was right after nady gave the yankees a lead with a 3-run homer. acquisitions are paying off, i guess.
  24. mitch atkins is having a rich hill 2006-like start for iowa... 6 IP, 0 BB and 11 K's
  25. yup he is making the adjustment now... just took a little time. pitchers are gonna realize that he's not going to keep trying to pull breaking balls on the outer half of the plate, and they'll have to throw him more fastballs. he's a good hitter, but still learning.
