  1. home run #5 for vitters in the 1st inning.
  2. back to being the cubs we all know and hate
  3. this is what you're supposed to do with a junkballer, crush him.
  4. i guess technically this was a 5/17 game because it continued after midnight.
  5. personally i think it's really hard to get a reliable correlation. i'd rather have a guy with a 1.40 WHIP who walks 0.7 guys per inning and gives up 0.7 hits per inning, than a guy who never walks anybody but gives up 1.4 hits per inning. the guy who gives up more hits is going to give up significantly more runs because the walks are station to station advances whereas some of those hits will be for extra bases or guys can go 1st to 3rd, etc. there's also the matter of how much extra base power a guy tends to give up. much like OPS's major flaw being a point of OBP equaling a point of SLG, WHIP's big flaw is that a walk and a hit are each valued the same. i'm sure there is a rough estimate but if you're looking for expected ERA, i wouldn't just use whip.
  6. I heard Len say in the pre-game the following day that the ball was "retrieved" & given to Scales; no details about whether there was any kind of trade, or if the fan gave it to him in person. By "retrieved" I took it to mean someone from Wrigley/Cubs staff got it from the fan... thanks, i'm glad to hear he got the ball.
  7. i wonder if bobby scales got his first major league HR ball.
  8. the canes broke my streak at 4. i went with "under 9 runs" in some softball game yesterday without knowing anything about either team. all i know about softball is that nobody scores unless one team is really terrible, and then they lose 15-0. since it was a regional semifinal or some crap, i figured both teams were pretty good. tomorrow the red wangs are my pick.
  9. if vitters keeps this up i think we'll be able to say that he's going to be a solid hitter for average. the questions will be 1. will he hit for enough average to make for a good OBP? or will he start working the count more and drawing more walks? 2. will he hit for more power down the road? I think he has the build to hit for power, but his approach - see ball, swing at ball, put ball in play - doesn't really lend itself to hitting for power. you probably hit for more power with a khalil greene-like approach - swinging and missing or fouling more balls off. of course, that also means your average sucks and your obp is lousy. i'm hoping that as he grows as a hitter he starts to draw more walks and is more of a traditional power hitter, rather than a high average, low walk rate curiosity.
  10. 3-4 with a homer and 2 singles for vitters. he's probably top 5 in batting average in the MWL. iowa is down 12-0 and doesn't have a hit. not good. daytona lost 6-3. starlin castro went 4-4 with 2 doubles and didn't make any errors. :)
  11. Part of it is that he's 26, but also there's no position to put him at. He'd have to produce like crazy on offense (which he might, but it's no sure thing) to make up for his defense. If we could find a way to trade DLee (which we can't) the option would arise to platoon Fox at 1B with Hoff, but that's not open right now. I'm not sure where the idea that Hoff needs a platoon partner comes from. At this point, Fox could really use a place to play. I'd like to know just how bad he is at third. Given that he's still in the minors, I'd imagine it's pretty bad. from what i've read, he's bad everywhere and probably can only be passable at 1B, since you don't have to do as much there.
  12. that should've been the tip off that this guy is a sham. who's ever heard of a marlins fan?
  13. he's a streaky hitter (albeit his best stats usually come after the ASB) and moved from a pitcher's park to a bandbox. he's in his late 30s but keeps himself in amazing shape, which is why he hasn't shown any decline. he's a good player, underrated, even if his defense does suck.
  14. in salt lake city, it's more than 4000 feet above sea level. not exactly a pitcher's paradise.
  15. back to adventurous archer: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER (somehow), 3 BB, 4 K.
  16. and a non-torn labrum too. And a manager that knows how to handle him. I can't believe this Prior is a [expletive] stuff is still continuing as he comes back too injured to pitch every season. What's not to believe? That rap will be with Prior for the rest of his career (if he has one anymore). I can't believe the blame everyone but Mark Prior stuff is still around. he was a great pitcher who became ineffective and then unable to pitch because of arm problems. the only person who's really deserving of blame is dusty baker and perhaps the cubs' medical staff for not diagnosing him properly; what should prior be blamed for? tearing his labrum? i'm sure he's sorry that it happened.
  17. good luck rich. hopefully your norfolk teammate will be joining you soon in baltimore.
  18. well i'm glad it won't happen.
  19. scales got to score an exciting game winning run in the 9th. he's certainly living the dream this month. good for him. http://www.fangraphs.com/lgraphs/290516116_Astros_Cubs_127529597_lbig.png :-))
  20. well we finally found something that miles can do.
  21. They could lose the game. And that's about it. not for cynosure.
