  1. i can't figure out the lengths that people like you will go to attack him. if it were any other player on the field who walked out, and found they couldn't take the pain in (wherever), i'm guessing you wouldn't think anything of it.
  2. or he's just hurt and you're picking at him for reasons unknown to everyone.
  3. that was a settlement between the braves and maddux. i believe the highest award in arbitration is still $10M (howard, k-rod, soriano). still, i don't see harden being able to reasonably ask for $12-$13M. and i don't really see his motivation for taking a deal of one year and about $10M. the possibilities for him - he has another largely-healthy year in 2010, similar to 2008, and he'll cash in with a nice big-time deal. but he's only had one year that was close to that, 2005, and he still only threw 128 innings that year. he missed a lot of time in 2006 and 2007, and he was average in 2009. if he's average or hurt for a lot of 2010, he'll cost himself a good amount of money. he'll be going into free agency having thrown nearly 300 innings the last two years and pitching pretty well during that time; seems way too risky for a guy with his profile to take a one year deal and hope for better things next offseason.
  4. hank baskett sucks. he has good size but he's neither fast nor agile enough to get himself open with any regularity, and his hands are average at best. granted he has a hot wife, but she's pregnant right now, so you can't even count that as upside.
  5. i'd much rather that aaron miles be the scapegoat for this season since he's terrible and removing him will actually improve the team.
  6. i have a hard time believing that, considering that he didn't pitch many innings in 2006-07 and has just been average this season. He's making $7 million this year. You think he'll get a pay cut down to $5-something million? i didn't say that. but i don't think there's any way he gets into the $12-13M area. remember, the largest-ever arbitration award is $10M to ryan howard, after two years in which he hit 105 home runs, drove in nearly 300 runs and had an OPS over 1.000. harden will be coming off an average year, an outstanding year, and then two years in which he pitched well when he was healthy, which was almost never. i don't even think harden would get $12-13M on the free market, let alone in arbitration. i see $10M as the ceiling that he could ask for an reasonably get.

  8. please remove aaron miles from the cubs.
  9. not offering harden arbitration would be extremely idiotic. that means they'd be required to offer him $5.6M, which is a bargain, and he wouldn't take it because he'll get more than that on the open market.
  10. ok, now that I agree with. regression maybe, but I certainly don't think "he'll suck". he's shown quite a bit of poise on the mound this year. I'm just trying to find some positives on the team this year man :\ fair enough. he strikes me as a league-average innings eater more than a middle-of-the-rotation guy, but i suppose we could always use a cheap innings-eater rather than paying out the butt for a jason marquis type. i've always kinda liked wells as a long man or back of the rotation guy; maybe my statement about him sucking next year is just feeling cynical about the team in general. i think he is a useful part.
  11. I like that you type this after today, and have previously said nothing like this. ok? i've hardly paid attention to the cubs the past month. i shouldn't say he will suck... i guess he might be your typical #5 but i don't think he will be better than that. although i did just arrive at this after watching him pitch four innings poorly, so what do i know.
  12. i have a bad feeling that randy wells will suck next year.
  13. i was at that game and it was plenty cute.
  14. i'm not going to crap on the cubs for the way they handled him. yeah they didn't necessarily stick to the script all year, but they kept him on a tight leash as far as pitch counts. he pitched 72 innings in 2006-07... clearly he has a fragile arm and even handling him with kid gloves may not be enough.
  15. bases loaded, no outs and prince fielder up. promising start.
  16. he interviewed for the presidency of rutgers and my dad was on the committee... this was while he was still president of IU. my dad said he was a very impressive candidate but his name was leaked and he withdrew from consideration.
  17. smokies lose by a run once again; they need to win 3 in a row now to win. in other words, the last game of their season is friday night.
  18. i liked harden better when he was good and pitched the ball over the plate most of the time.
  19. knee injury, although a lot of people would argue that he had knee problems because he was trying to carry almost 300 lbs toward the end of his career. i think he'll be fine through his late 20s, but really i would not trust a guy with that physique beyond age 30. tony gwynn was one guy who got heavy and stayed good, but he had incredible bat skills and wasn't carrying around a gut until late in his career.
  20. if you're expanding, portland, oregon probably has to get one of the new franchises. there are over 2M people in the portland metro area and they support the basketball franchise well. other options would include las vegas, salt lake city, either raleigh or charlotte, north jersey, san antonio, and if you really wanted to do something interesting/crazy, san juan or mexico city.
  21. I'm not focusing on it just because it went against us, and I don't think it cost us the game (surely not any more than giving up a kickoff return for a score and an unforced fumble in our own territory did). I posted it because no one in the supposedly pro-ND media is running with the story and otherwise no one else would know about it, and also to emphasize how shady refs have been and continue to be at UM (for no reason I can think of, ND/UM is the only contract I know of in college football where the home team gets to pick the refs). i think it's more that the media isn't going to pick apart a referee decision that was made in the first quarter of a football game in which each team scored like 28 more points. the only time anyone talks about a bad call made very early in a baseball/football/hockey game is if there's almost no scoring after that or the call is absolutely horrendous.
  22. wow that michael jackson/farrah fawcett/baseball article was awful.
  23. just tried searching social forum for rocky mount (last post i made) and it redirected me to the first page of the forum. this was the url at the top after i searched: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/bridge/index.php?keywords=rocky+mount&terms=all&author=&fid[]=4&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
