  1. not really... there have been tons of guys like brad eldred, bob hamelin, etc. who hit for lots of power but didn't make enough contact to be adequate major league ballplayers. power is a good tool to have, but ability to make hard contact with good regularity and put the ball in play most of the time is an important skill. for a 19 year old to be able to put the ball in play as much as castro does speaks well to his future development. also, derek jeter hit 16 home runs in 454 minor league games.
  2. he also doesn't walk much. from following his games in the AFL and this spring, it seems like he's an early-in-the-count hitter. so if he keeps beating up on first pitches he'll start seeing more junk early, but he also seems to have pretty good judgment at the plate and able to lay off those.
  3. yeah agreed on the south, i have nova in the final four and they've been playing like crap for a month. but that bracket is pretty bad; duke will have their usual problems with quick, athletic teams.
  4. yeah that's pretty much intent to injure, just like the cooke play.
  5. between april and june, how much better could castro be at ss than theriot, or how much difference would there be between theriot and fontenot/baker (if theriot usurped the 2b spot)? maybe half a win? plus theriot tends to hit better early in the season and then tail off in august/september as he gets worn down. i just don't see enough evidence to warrant keeping castro on the big club and burning a year off his arbitration clock. even if castro ends up being a league-average ss it will still be a money waste in the long run. send him to iowa and give him some time with von joshua; if he's performing well and there is a need on the big league club, then give him a shot in the second half.
  6. at this point the only question is whether he starts over lee on opening day
  7. diamond was worth a flier, but his command really needs to improve and supposedly his stuff isn't as good as it was before his TJS.
  8. wow that was some rush by backstrom.
  9. watch someone on the bruins take a run at crosby and get suspended for the rest of the season.
  10. when was the last time the pac 10 was this wretched in basketball? really they only have three teams with a chance to get in, and two of them are very borderline.
  11. i will also say about players like escobar and chapman, unless they really come through and look great this year, you can't keep them under your format of 4 keepers. i'll use my team as an example - i have zimmerman, felix hernandez, justin upton, adrian gonzalez, ian kinsler, grady sizemore and jayson werth. even if i do make a great pick of someone who improves his status as a prospect, there's probably no chance i can keep him unless most of my big-dollar guys collapse.
  12. i would have made good picks like that if yahoo didn't suck balls.
  13. they sure do, and they gave us the great jeff samardzija!
  14. This is great... This guy gets booed a BUTTLOAD and it looks like he doesn't let that bother him. Way to go Sori... You did suck last year, but you're alright in my book. At least he can handle the pressure or bitch about it or complain or blame it on other things... yeah now if only the general manager would say things like "move on, 2010 is here" and we could be done with this crap.
  15. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v497/poolboybob/Picture1.png [expletive] you yahoo.
  16. oh it was a dumb joke, should've known
  17. I'm not worried about Sanberg managing the team under ANY circumstances. In fact, I'd bet my life savings that Sanberg does not ever become Cubs' manager. you would??? it seems like a cubbish thing to do; they've already promoted him (very quickly) to their most advanced affiliate and it would be a p.r. boon among most of the fans.
  18. besides the 3rd inning, cubs pitchers did well: grabow, parisi, cashner, diamond, gaub and berg each pitch an inning and they combined for a line of 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. scrappy mcsingles was 3-3; castro took over and hit a pair of singles in his 2 ABs.
  19. I would put him in a 3-4. Could be a very similar player to Orakpo. we don't play a 3-4... oops. but i like kindle better than the other two guys i considered (everson griffen from usc, who seems to still be getting by on the "potential" label but hasn't produced enough; carlos dunlap, who has character issues and work ethic questions).
  20. eagles could use some help on the defensive line and linebacker. i have no idea where he fits better (or if he'd be better in a 3-4), but i'm picking sergio kindle, DE/OLB from texas.
  21. i don't mean the playoff idea, i mean the competitive imbalance in baseball. clearly you can't think it's fair that the d-rays, orioles and blue jays have to compete for (at most) two playoff spots with the two wealthiest teams in the game. my question was how you would address this issue of fairness and competitive imbalance... "do nothing, it's unfair, too damn bad" is a position you can take.
  22. jim hendry could also help things out by shutting the [expletive] up. why can't he say "the milton bradley chapter is closed and he's no longer a member of the organization; i don't see any reason to respond to his latest charges."
  23. if by nice you mean horrifying then i agree 100 percent.
  24. "I think it's time maybe Hendry looked himself in the mirror," an agitated TruffleShuffle said Wednesday in response to Hendry's latest charges that the terrible 2009 campaign was the fault of others. "He just didn't put together a good team," TruffleShuffle said. "He didn't get the job done. It's really unfortunate that you ... try to use the other areas for excuses."
  25. They can't have too many that played for other teams either. Off the top of my head, the only Cub developed OF that meets that criteria would be Joe Carter. I guess there must be others but I'm having trouble remembering any. Maybe Billy Hatcher? If Palmeiro had stayed in LF, he would have met them easily. Dave Martinez easily topped the .270 eqa a couple of years, but never had the hr But the winner is: Mel Hall - in 1983, he hit: .283/.352/.488/.840 for the Cubs (17 hr, .290 eqa) oops, sorry - it was .270 EqA and 15 HR in consecutive seasons. granted this makes things a little tougher, but that's a pretty low bar for an outfielder to reach.
