  1. because most organizations don't waste $10m on wide receivers? samardzija got one of the biggest contracts awarded to players in the amateur draft. sometimes the cubs are unlucky but usually managment just does [expletive] things that predictably blows up in their face. What did Strasberg get? 4 years, $15.1M major league contract. the thing is, you compare samardzija's contract to guys who were legitimately great players in college: pedro alvarez: 4 years, $6.4M major league contract matt wieters: $6M bonus strasburg: 4 years, $15.1M major league contract david price: 6 years, $8.5M major league contract mark teixeira: 4 years, $9.5M major league contract mark prior: 4 or 5 years, $10.5M major league contract evan longoria: $3M bonus it makes no sense whatsoever. these were guys who were great college hitters and pitchers; samardzija got as much or more money than most of them even though he was an unpolished guy who didn't have particularly good numbers in college, and there were serious questions as to whether he would even develop the secondary stuff to be a starter. it's just an incredibly stupid decision and a massive waste of resources.

  3. who cares, just leave him in until he gets out of the inning or gives up 20
  4. can't believe we gave samardzija $10M out of college. that's what you do with guys like pedro alvarez, matt wieters, mark prior, etc, not a guy who is probably a late first-round talent that you want to buy away from another sport. what a horrendous use of resources.
  5. dayton moore has been a pretty big disappointment.
  6. thank God we don't have instant replay, good thing the integrity of the game is preserved by the umpire being able to blow an obvious call.
  7. it takes two to tango and we'd be the only ones on that dance floor You don't like dancing with yourself?
  8. Nobody's buying at his contract. yeah no kidding, i'd be very much for trading him somewhere, but unfortunately we'd probably have to eat half his contract. carlos gonzalez (one of my biggest man-crushes in the game) had 4 hits today... think he is gonna have a big year.
  9. he's probably right though. he's actually a pretty smart guy and into numbers and stuff. he can probably see that last years team underachieved a bit, and assuming health, the offense could bounce back quite a bit. he can also see that the bullpen will probably be shaky and that silva and gorzelanny are in our rotation. given how lousy the cubs' offense was and the aging lineup with at least one injury-prone cog, i wouldn't say that this offense is a known entity. but you're right in that the pitching can easily be shaky this year. cubs might just not be very good, frankly.
  10. lol so orel hersheiser has already determined that the cubs' offense is going to be fine and their playoff chances depend on their pitching. nice to see he jumped to that conclusion after 3 innings of play in 2010.
  11. well looks like heyward can't hit lefties, we've found his achilles heel!
  12. why do i feel like 90% of da bum's posts could be bought tumbling down with about 3 minutes of sleuthing?
  13. laporta isn't a bad choice if he stays healthy. last year i chose nelson cruz but also considered justin upton and russell branyan. i'm not sure if there were any options as good as those guys this year, though i suppose heyward, laporta or snider could break out and hit 30.
  14. theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee yankees lose
  15. uconn was upset by baylor tonight. and when i say upset, i mean uconn is probably surprised that they only won by 20.
  16. care to revise this statement?
  17. i don't think it will be a big deal... most of us have already come to the conclusion that our window to win a championship has closed, mcnabb is getting older and more immobile, and getting a decent return for him and moving forward with kolb as the starter is the best thing at this point.
