  1. 7 ip, 5 h, 1 r, 0 bb, 8 k. would assume he's done. another guy who's been throwing well lately is nick struck. 6 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 2 bb, 6 k tonight, probably done as well. the last four games he's thrown 6 innings each outing (24 overall) with 13 h, 2 r, 4 bb, 22 k.
  2. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/not-every-day-a-starlin-rises/
  3. with the results he got in toronto, baltimore, seattle and philly, he can publicly urinate on the bill james baseball abstract for all i care.
  4. soto had two ABs. i don't really have a problem with playing hill - soto has played a lot lately and two straight days off is not a bad thing. the bigger problem is that koyie hill is just an awful baseball player. you want your backup catcher to at least be able to hit a little bit, and hill cannot do that. there is zero reason for him to be brought back next year with better options already in house.
  5. who gives a [expletive]. mlb has no authority to restrain spending on draft picks. tell selig's minions to blow it out their ass.
  6. hak-ju lee has a triple and homer and it's only the second inning. go for the cycle kid!
  7. starlin got 2 doubles, lilly had a nice start (good for trade purposes), geo hit a home run and the cubs lost. i see no negatives here.
  8. hell, how about just the last 12 games: 21-48, 17 runs, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 9 homers, 24 RBI, .438/.462/1.146/1.607 9 homers, 15 XBH's, 24 RBI in 12 games... yowza
  9. man way to get that momentum rollin' cubbies that is embarrassingly bad. the year we didn't suck (2008), we were "59-24 when they get a quality start.... 37-39 when they don't"
  10. i don't get it. you think we'd have to overpay for a guy who has traditionally been underpaid for his production, but we won't have to overpay san diego in prospects for one of the top 10 players in baseball who also happens to be very popular, that team's only real star and a native of that area? and then sign him to a huge deal? i suspect that gonzalez will be one of those guys like miggy cabrera who never ends up hitting the free agent market - either he signs a deal with san diego or someone trades for and signs him. i guess if you're willing to drop $20m a year and three or four good prospects for him it can work.
  11. ok so that gets rejected but pronger's contract going from $7m to $4m to $0.5m (at ages 41/42) and hossa's deal (getting $1m or less ages 38-42) were ok? i'm all for the devils getting slapped down, but this seems rather arbitrary. i'm not sure what the solution is, but there's got to be some way to close that loophole so that teams can't lower the cap hit by tacking on garbage years at the end of a contract.
  12. upgrade in RF? (a) who's out there and (b) where's fukudome going? we already have four OF... don't sign another one. at this point i'm just hoping ARam doesn't go too crazy in the second half, opt out and get signed by the red sox. maybe just a .800 ops the rest of the way so that we know he's still good.
  13. meh, i really wonder about the GB/LD/FB stats of players at that level.
  14. not really sure why the astros would do this, unless they wanted first crack at signing werth to a long-term deal, or they just want the draft picks they'd get after he leaves.
  15. i guess if i were gm of the cubs i'd go into next year with this plan: catcher: soto, chirinos 1b: ??? 2b: fontenot/??? ss: castro 3b: hopefully aramis utility: d. barney of: byrd, soriano, colvin, fukudome (assuming no trade) sp: zambrano, dempster, wells, cashner, gorzo/silva/jay jax bullpen: marmol, marshall, silva/gorzo, grablow that's 19 spots. i'd sign a 1b, probably adam dunn. i'd look for a platoon partner for fontenot - perhaps cristian guzman or juan uribe? another possibility would be orlando hudson as everyday 2b and fontenot is another utility guy. there's 21. the 5th OF spot could probably be filled in house by someone like adduci, lahair or snyder, or you could go out and get a guy like gabe gross, jody gerut, whatever. i'd look into one more middle reliever - someone like jesse crain, matt guerrier, grant balfour, and other guys who are not current or former twins. then i'd hope that the last couple of bullpen spots could be filled by a group of guys that includes jeff gray, stevens, gaub, parker, caridad, dolis, m. mateo... hell even angel guzman gets back for part of the year.
  16. dunn has the dreaded old player skills. he's probably not going to age well. still he's only 30 (31 this offseason) and i think he can be productive for another couple of years. if you sign him to a four year deal, you're expecting very good production over the first half of the contract and hoping he doesn't fall off a cliff (travis hafner) until very late in the deal. berkman has old player skills except for the low batting average... his down year plus the injury woes would cause me to steer clear unless you get him on the cheap.
  17. i think he is all the way around now
  18. get him peeing on his hands and he'll be fine in no time
  19. Do we know exactly what happened to Trey? No official word yet. The Cubs might have him on a low pitch count to help combat any ill effects of dead arm, but I think that's really unlikely. Just keep your fingers crossed that it was something minor like cramps. yeah if they were going to shorten the leash they would've pulled him after 4 innings or something, and not give him 1.2 innings a day after they played a 19 inning ballgame. good news on mcnutt - left game with a blister
  20. gaub's command has always been spotty but he's been even wilder this year. maybe there's an issue in his personal life or something that's affected his pitching? i was hoping that at least one of stevens, gaub and parker would have established himself this year as a solid big league reliever... pretty disappointing.
  21. wow i knew he'd been good lately but didn't realize it was that good. good thing the guy with the best OBP and OPS has spent all but 23 of his ABs this year in the #7 or #8 spot of the lineup, while guys like theriot, colvin, fukudome, baker and lee get to hit #1-3.
  22. two positives from this year - we still have a very good catcher, and it appears we have a shortstop who will at the very least be a solid player.
