  1. smoak has a LD rate of 23.9% but a babip of just .238... without bad luck his numbers would actually be solid.
  2. not sure if it was discussed here, but the cardinals' 6-run collapse the other day (giving up 9 in the 9th) was frickin great
  3. torre is good with talented veteran teams. the cubs have the veterans, just not the talent.
  4. pretty hard to beat out mike trout for that list (not to mention the other two outfielders)
  5. i think the biggest concern about vitters is that while the scouts drool over his swing and ability to make contact, if he's not swinging at the right pitches, it's not going to do him a whole lot of good. i think that's what keith law was getting at. for someone who supposedly has a great gift with his swing, he seems to strike out too much and not hit for a good enough average.
  6. what a wretched team this is. pretty sad that the season is only halfway over; bet they're going to have a blast playing the rest of their games.
  7. we must have been really impressed with that goal he scored against us in the last game of the season
  8. my first instinct to the Meszaros trade is yuck, but we've turned guys like him around before, so maybe it's a good move. signing leighton to a two-year deal, on the other hand, is just bad.
  9. kevin goldstein did a top 10 of prospects still in the minors, and this was how he ranked them: 1. Domonic Brown, OF, Philles 2. Mike Trout, OF, Angels 3. Julio Teheran, RHP, Braves 4. Jeremy Hellickson, RHP, Rays 5. Desmond Jennings, OF, Rays 6. Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals 7. Martin Perez, LHP, Rangers 8. Jesus Montero, C/DH, Yankees 9. Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Reds 10. Tyler Matzek, LHP, Rockies he then listed a number of candidates for the next spot on the list: 0 * Dustin Ackley, 2B, Mariners * J.P. Arencibia, C, Blue Jays * Chris Carter, 1B, Athletics * Eric Hosmer, 1B, Royals * John Lamb, LHP, Royals * Mike Montgomery, LHP, Royals * Logan Morrison, 1B, Marlins * Will Myers, C, Royals * Miguel Sano, 3B, Twins that's a lot of royals, by the way.
  10. He has such a slow bat that his .257 seems about where it should be. It's like he chooses one AB per game to swing hard and then hits weak groundballs to 2nd every other. he's at almost 20% line drives, which is where he was the last two years (and had BABIPs over .300)
  11. different races... invalid comparison in all seriousness, jackson is at .326/.426/.543/.969 for the year, with 21 doubles, 8 triples, 8 homers, 14 SB, 62 runs, 44 RBI and 45 RBI in 71 games. that's very good.
  12. you're a cross country coach, how does that make you think? run faster than the other people.
  13. trading molina would be pretty stupid. the bigger problem lies at other positions; the production molina usually gives plus his outstanding defense makes him a very valuable commodity at a tough position to fill. his babip is .257 so far... i think it was a little high the last two years, but this year it's a lot lower than it should be.
  14. that may be true, but the statement that it just rewards stars and ignores the players who are most deserving has no basis in reality.
  15. chile played spain and brazil, two teams clearly better than england and ghana, and their other two opponents (switzerland, honduras) were probably just as good as ours (slovenia, algeria). i think mexico's schedule is pretty clearly tougher than ours since they had to play brazil instead of ghana in the knockout round. you're right about paraguay, their schedule isn't really worse than ours, though i still think they're a good bit better than the u.s.
  16. That's not true at all. It's primary purpose has always been as a marketing tool to showcase big names on the field at one time. They have a long history of bypassing the most productive players of the first half for bigger stars. no, there is a history of some of the more productive players being skipped over for bigger stars - hence the fan voting - but the reserves and pitchers are the guys who were the first half's best players. you don't have .340/25/80 hitters or 11-1, 2.40 pitchers being left off the all star roster because they're one-year wonders.
  17. i don't think that's likely. i can see him being a september callup straight from tennessee, depending on their playoff situation. That would really be a waste to start his arb clock ticking as a 4th-6th(or 5th outfielder depending what happens with Kosuke and Nady) on a dead ass team. i'm pretty sure that september call-ups don't start the clock.
  18. why the hell does it matter? the cubs are going nowhere this year.
  19. if only ricketts hadn't gone to africa, the cubs would be running away with the division
  20. you're veering into colin cowherd territory (it's the hall of fame, not the "hall of very good") here ? that's a pretty baseless comparison. ultimately, the all-star game is an exhibition game. it's primary purpose is so gather up the biggest stars in the game and put them on one stage for one night. no, its primary purpose has always been to reward the players who had the best first halves. that's why you had tim wakefield, edwin jackson, aaron hill, ben zobrist, brandon inge, jason bartlett, nelson cruz, adam jones, hunter pence, brad hawpe, jason marquis, ryan franklin and heath bell on the all star teams last year. none of those guys are giant stars of the game. putting a guy like strasburg on the all star team would be completely out of place with what has been done in baseball pretty much forever.
  21. right, but we played what certainly looks to be an easier schedule than teams like mexico, paraguay, portugal and chile. i definitely don't think we're better than the last three.
