  1. most guys in the minors leagues skipped that step (college). but yes he has been rushed stupidly, to nobody's surprise.
  2. i love vin scully... classic baseball voice and he manages to fill up the air time without seeming like he's talking too much. harry kalas was my favorite but now that he's gone, i like vin scully best. hawk is rated as the worst or almost the worst every time a publication does one of these lists. i have no idea why the white sox keep him on. maybe it's like those bored, spiteful couples that stay together after 40+ years of marriage. they're just used to what they have and don't care enough to part ways.
  3. some of the stuff he did in the '80s was pretty embarrassing, but after his ban was lifted he was a little more laid back and did what a rich owner should do - give his people the resources to win without meddling in every transaction.
  4. i think it's funny that the two catchers used by the southern league north all-stars were both tennessee smokies, and that steve clevenger (who has been lousy this year) was even on the all-star team.
  5. boy that t-a wang has been terrible so far... don't remember how much we paid for him.
  6. darwin barney should definitely be our utility guy next year... won't hit for power or walk, but he doesn't strike out that much and should hit for a decent average, and supposedly he's an excellent fielder. junior lake had another home run and walk today... he OPS'ed over .800 in june and now is near 1.000 for july (after .480 and .520 in april/may). just as important, his BB/K ratio is 24/59... not great, but a hell of a lot better than last year's 18/138 (!!!) and he's only 20 years old at daytona. he's still a long shot, but at least the signs are there that he's turning raw talent into actual production.
  7. so basically duke then
  8. yeah that seems like just about the worst possible solution.
  9. lol i think torres was offside there
  10. If either of these teams dove any harder they'd break the field. it's almost like watching italy play itself... almost
  11. that'll do it
  12. went down pretty easily there
  13. that time they actually had a mini 3-on-1... he should've dished off to his left.
  14. the assumption that seems to be made here is that the cubs haven't won in 100 years because their facilities have always been inferior and they've always played too many day games. for much of the time the cubs have been at wrigley, everyone played their games under the sun, so that excuse can only be used for a fraction of the 100+ year drought. i'd also guess that wrigley wasn't a dump compared to most ballparks for much of its history. fenway isn't that great for the players and the red sox have contended a lot more than the cubs have. the cubs have consistently been mismanaged over the past 100 years, that's why they never win.
  15. you are the one who keeps (wrongly) assuming that playoff series are a coin flip.
  16. i think fredi gonzalez would be a good choice for manager. as for GM, i'd throw a bunch of money at someone who has already done well in the position (towers isn't a bad choice). if that doesn't work, get someone who values the farm system and non-traditional way of thinking about the game (jack z. from seattle is a good example of this)... someone who will find diamonds in the rough (franklin gutierrez, russell branyan) rather than signing guys like grabow and henry blanco because they're established veterans who know how to play the game.
  17. too bad geo can't play defense, because he sure can hit
  18. agree, there are so many ways to circumvent it. best to just do it like hockey. hockey's cap is a little weird because you can give hossa/pronger-type contracts to guys who aren't going to play the full length of their contract, and you can get out from under bad contracts (at least from a cap perspective) by dumping overpaid guys in the minors, but the cap is a hard cap and you can't exceed it. same with the nfl. what's the point of having a cap if certain teams go way over it? just call it a luxury tax or revenue sharing; this soft cap business is a joke.
  19. the nba salary "cap" is such a joke. why even have one?
  20. come the hell on lilly, don't torpedo your trade value
  21. watching korver try to play defense is hilarious. he has to be one of the worst defensive players in the league; it's hard for me to imagine more than about 10 guys with less ability to guard NBA players than him. my favorite part is that he actually does try hard at it, but he's so friggin slow that guys just blow right by him.
