next five would have been rusin, beliveau (wish i knew more about his stuff, love his low H/9 and high K/9 rates though), gaub, alcantara and either aaron kurcz or one of the three kids putting up good numbers in the DSL at age 17 (hernandez, zapata, amaya).
feel free to rank based on historical performance or, if you prefer, who's played well in the last week. i don't know if starlin and cash have used up their rookie eligibility, but i'm not going to be listing them. 1. b. jackson 2. archer 3. hak-ju lee 4. vitters 5. mcnutt 6. jay jackson 7. carpenter 8. lake 9. rhee 10. guyer 11. jin-yeong kim (will give some credit to his $1.2m bonus) 12. dolis 13. chirinos 14. hayden simpson (new guy) 15. lemahieu 16. raley 17. cales 18. barney 19. szczur or however it's spelled 20. burke
i don't think there's a more shining example of the cubs' incompetence than howry's continued presence on this team. he got released by the team with the worst bullpen in major league history, his numbers and velocity were all way down from what they were when he was good, and the cubs still signed him and have kept him around even though he's been awful. speaking of awful, koyie hill's career line is .212/.277/.296. compare that to livan hernandez (.224/.234/.299), jason marquis (.202/.223/.296) and micah owings (.293/.323/.538/.861!!! maybe he should try this full-time)
soriano was 5 years older and a bad fielder, and i enjoy the idea of telling one of the organization's few good players to move positions or sit on the bench. that usually turns out great.
plus chipper had played some outfield in the past and he just volunteered to move for castilla. maybe he liked outfield, who knows. i guess if starlin volunteers to move over to second then we won't have to worry about how one of the team's best players reacts when he's asked to move off his natural position when he hasn't even reached his prime.
nobody has given any sort of reasonable precedent for an early to mid 20s, good shortstop who's above average defensively being moved for a guy who seems like he'd be better defensively.
yeah, i have to agree... moving a guy like michael young (lol at his 2008 gold glove, by the way) off shortstop when his defense had been panned for years is different than moving 23 or 24 year old starlin castro off the position when he's likely going to be an above-average defender.
ok well since we're getting back 3 games from the pirates, i'd like to say that the phillies are better than the cubs so let's give them two games in that series (you gave us a sweep) and let's give the cardinals another game from that series (after all, they're better than us too). we had that 4-run 8th inning against the brewers earlier this year to come back from down 6-3; should've lost that. there was also the game where we beat the mariners in 13 innings when they left 35 guys on base or something. based on pythagorean winning %, we should be 12.5 games behind the cards. so i guess we should consider the cubs lucky to be only 9.5 games out.
yes i remember you and rob being on the bandwagon. he added a single and is 2-3 with a double and a walk. jay jackson gave up 3 runs in the first inning on a walk, single, triple and single. he's making me a sad panda right now.
2 hours behind eastern australia (qld/vic/nsw/tazzie) and 1.5 hours behind central oz (s. oz and n. territory). the half hour thing is annoying. by the way it's already wednesday here so the cubs game is over. they win 3-1. Wait....., what ??? I'm supposed to be in Omaha on Wednesday. I'm in deep doo-doo !! ...
