    Archer was absolutely a depth guy. He was a raw 20 year old arm with no control who wasn't a top 10 prospect for Cleveland. ETA: i don't really consider archer a depth guy - he was more of a longshot high-ceiling type player. i think jeff lorick or matt spencer are more examples of organizational guys, who might turn into a situational reliever (lorick) or 4th/5th OF (spencer) if everything goes right for them. other examples would be scott moore/rocky cherry in the trachsel deal.

    yeah i get that it's a rule, but i just don't like the rule. maybe there could be a different rule for inside/outside the box? an example of the type of reds that i hate is when there's a loose attacking player chasing down a ball in the box (kind of a breakaway, but the offensive player is chasing the ball rather than controlling it.) goalie comes out to try to smother the ball or knock it away, dives and clips the attacking player's foot, and the attacker goes down. on a lot of those plays the attacking player kicks the ball past the goalie, often kicks it too hard (to the point where it's either going out or would be a shot from a severe angle), and is rewarded with a PK and the goalie getting tossed from the game. just strikes me as a BS rule - like in hockey, i wouldn't want a team to play shorthanded the rest of the game if they haul down a guy on a breakaway... and goals are way less likely on the penalty shot in hockey than they are in soccer.

    Unless you're tiny/fat and white, then you're a good character guy who knows what's really important. Really can't see Kaplan having the same issues if Konerko did the same. Or someone like Thome. what if they went to the dominican republican over the ASB? then they're hanging out with lazy brown people and giving them their hard-earned american dollars.

    i hate when the ref goes to a straight red for a borderline call inside the box (see: USA-Brazil women's game). PK's have an 85% rate of effectiveness, so you're already punishing the offending team by giving the attacking team a 5 in 6 chance of scoring. like the scoring chance that was supposedly prevented by the foul yesterday - was marta 85% likely to score there? probably not. so not only does her team get, in my opinion, a better chance at scoring, but then they've got an extra player the remainder of the game, and the offending player has to sit out a subsequent game. i understand it if there's a blatant intentional handball to stop a sure goal or a player just grabs someone and hauls them down. but i've seen way too many players get thrown out for borderline calls or sloppy challenges... it just seems like triple punishment when the awarding of a PK is more than enough.

    It's nice to see Rhee putting together good outings more and more consistently. If he was able to return to his previous status that would be a nice boost for the farm. some guys come back from TJS really easily, but a lot of other guys it takes a year where they are still strengthening their arm. it's also common to not locate as well in the comeback year, and based on rhee's walk rate and how hittable he was last year, would seem to be the case. plus he tired a lot before they shut him down. anyway i was very high on him before the injury, so hopefully he's making it back to become a legitimate prospect again.

    reed is wildly overrated in cf because he makes a few great catches on balls that a faster CF would've caught without having to lay out.

    the guy gave [expletive] bone marrow to a baby he'd never met before, but yeah he's probably a complete jerk who is hated by his teammates.

    He's got 240 innings spread over 5 seasons in the majors, as a middle reliever. There's no reason why somebody who follows baseball to know who he is. he pitched in like half his team's games last year. he's probably going to pitch in close to half of washington's games this year. if you're a fan of a national league team, then he's almost certainly faced your team multiple times each year during the past 2-3 years, and since he's one of the best setup men in baseball, it's very likely that he's faced your team in multiple high-leverage situations during that time. plus if you play fantasy baseball in a league with any depth, he should definitely be owned by someone in your league. there are two reasons that "somebody who follows baseball [should] know who he is"

    i find it mind-boggling that not only was a serious mvp candidate not chosen by the fans, but he wasn't selected as a reserve or as one of those final five either. wtf???

    yeah i know middle relievers are pretty obscure, but ones that are consistently good should be known if you follow baseball at all.

    Solo never once came off the line.     it's true. he was certainly on the HoF path, with great power and top-notch defense, and then he just got fat and has been worth less than 1 win in his past 5 seasons. if he'd just continued as a 4 to 8 win player for another few years it probably would've been a no-brainer selection... instead he's got just about no chance because he was borderline useless after he hit 30.

    gotta like what a lot of the azl cubs have been doing at the plate. easterling is 3-4 tonight and is hitting .500, amaya 2-4 with a double (.375 average), marco hernandez 3-3 (.385 average), geiger 2-4 (.385 average), zapata 1-3 with a walk (.333 average). the only guy who isn't really hitting much is the donger, who's hitting .174 with a wretched 15 K's against 0 BB in 11 games.

    That's a fair point. Looking at UZR, here's the chief offenders, remembering that UZR takes a full season to stabilize: it would be a fair point if the biggest offenders were guys that were projected to come back. baker, fukudome, johnson and montanez are unlikely to all be cubs next year. koyie hill has been bad defensively and Lord knows we all hope he's gone. plus the defense being lousy doesn't make dempster or garza fundamentally worse pitchers. they are who they are. if they had a team of ozzie smiths behind them they'd look like perennial all-stars and if they had a team of adam dunns behind them they'd look like 5th starters at best. if you replace dempster or garza with worse pitchers they'll just post worse numbers.

    rizzo is on the padres and kelly is in the padres' minor league system... they were traded in the gonzalez deal.
