  1. Not even close, unless being in a major media market, being popular and having a mustache qualifies one for the Hall of Fame.
  2. To be fair, Smith was a better basestealer, bunter, and had a career OBP that was 15 points higher than Concepcion. Smith, I think, is a bit underrated because he had no power, but he do a pretty good job of getting on base, and made contact frequently (1072:589 BB:K ratio for his career).
  3. I'd vote yes if his most similar pitching comparison was Pedro Martinez...
  4. Paging Bob's Keeper... he is better with this stuff than I am.
  5. I'm actually on the fence with him due to his not being a particularly dominant pitcher at any stage of his career. But, the 10 top 10 finishes in the ERA race, and the great durability he showed (which is very important for a pitcher) gets him my first vote.
  6. Let's keep this poll going into January, that way we can see the Cubs finish ahead of the Cards and Astros in at least something in 2006.
  7. I'd take Gagne's 2003 over Gossage's 1981. Gagne had 55 saves, a 1.20 ERA, 335 ERA+, 0.69 WHIP, and 15 K per 9 IP. Gossage had 20 saves, a 0.77 ERA, 465 ERA+, 0.77 WHIP, and 9.3 K per 9 IP. The biggest problem I have with Gossage's season is that all his stats are in line with his other seasons except for his BAA, which is absurdly low. Gossage wasn't striking more guys out than usual, and his walk rate was basically identical to what it would be the next year. So, this suggests that Gossage was pretty lucky in posting such a low ERA and WHIP that season. I believe that if the full season had been played, and not 2/3 of a season, that there would have been some leveling off of his numbers. And I guess beyond that, I guess I just have a hard time taking Gossage's 1981 season as one of the best relief years ever when he only pitched 46 innings, versus 82 for Gagne in 2003, or 73 for Eck in 1990.
  8. Dennis Eckersley and Eric Gagne beg to differ...
  9. Are there any career closers that you'd consider HOFers? What's wrong with Mariano Rivera? He's been able to dominate with one pitch. It's a no-brainer IMO, that he'll eventually get in. Absolutely, great playoff numbers, very durable, plus a 197 ERA+ which ranks him among the elite closers in baseball for a decade. He should be on every ballot.
  10. I say no... a reliever needs to be more dominant than he was in order to make the HOF, in my opinion. He did have a dominant stretch, but really leveled off in the latter half of his career.
  11. Rice has slightly better career numbers, but Dawson played 500 more games. I say if Dawson had played his # of games but put up Rice-like numbers, he'd be in, and if Rice had played 3-4 more seasons, he'd be in. As it is, I would not vote either one into the HOF, and I was a big Hawk fan growing up. He was a very good player, but not a HOFer.
  12. I have a suggestion for the header at the top of every page. Currently it reads: Unique information and analysis about your amazing Cubs I agree with most of that statement, except for the word "amazing." I think that could actually be construed as false advertising. Might I suggest the following words: befuddling incompetent woeful mismanaged embarrassing demoralizing inept
  13. I don't get it. Hendry screws up and doesn't get a competent SS even though there were a few on the market in Nomar, Furcal and Renteria. Now, he's possibly willing to trade one of the team's best starting pitchers to fill the void? What the hell is the point? Wouldn't it have been better to have a wildly-overpaid Furcal and Mark Prior than to have Miguel Tejada and no Mark Prior? It's a disgrace that a GM with a $100M+ payroll and plenty of money to burn has now boxed himself into a position where the only way to significantly improve the offense is to weaken the pitching staff. But, I'm not going to bother getting angry about it because these imcompetent boobs will do whatever they want to drive the franchise straight into the ground.
  14. Hey, at least give the Cubs credit for going into 2006 with a team that everyone knows is crappy, so that even the most optimistic Cub fan will have a hard time getting his or her hopes up. It's hard to be too disappointed when you have no expectations.
  15. Wow, am I excited! This is going to be the big signing that puts the Cubs over the top! Not.
  16. I'm pretty sure PSU would beat Tulsa by more than a touchdown, and I doubt WVU will beat Georgia. 10-7 seems like the right number of points for a Miami-Auburn game, though.
  17. Cubs, because they needed to improve to make up ground on the other two. They have all had crappy offseasons, which still leaves the Cubs behind the Cards and Astros.
  18. I remember back when Notre Dame sucked, I actually felt a little bad for them. It's harder to hate a team that sucks like that. Now Notre Dame is good again, and I really wish they would go back to sucking.
  19. PSU got a big pickup today... DT Jared Odrick from Pennsylvania committed. 5 star recruit, 6'5, 300 lbs, supposed to be very quick for his size. I guess he had been pretty close to committing to UGA but decided to stay close to home.
  20. I just voted no, is that cheating?
  21. I don't know, I just listed off a car manufacturer. I think they only use Chevy, Ford, and Dodge. Probably won't use foreign cars b/c most of the fans a rednecks and they wouldn't like that. Not true Toyota is involved in the NASCAR Truck series and I believe they are working on getting in the NEXTEL series as well. Cool, I guess. I wasn't sure. I just thought that was the case. I don't follow the sport very closely. Not a sport!
  22. Just change the thread title to "Cards fans!" The stupid can be implied...
  23. I have a very hard time envisioning this team finishing over .500, considering it's just as bad if not worse than last year's team which finished below .500.
  24. Why can't I select "who cares" with my vote?
