  1. While I think the power is a bit of a fluke, he's always been able to draw some walks. I see him being something like a .250/.320/.360/.680 guy next year, which I'd be just fine with from a backup catcher. It's not amazing production, but it's good enough given the league minimum salary.
  2. So when are we drafting?
  3. I actually had to look this up to see if it was the Lock Haven that I'm familiar with. It is. Lock Haven is a small Division II school about 30 minutes north of State College, PA. Not only are they D-II, but they're a bad D-II... 2-9 last year, averaging 8 points per game and 39 points against per game. Southern Illinois should win by more than 50 points.
  4. Jeez, Walrond is starting? Cubs are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
  5. I actually laughed out loud when I got to this point. Why am I annoyed so much by the grammar in his first sentence of that paragraph?? oh, the irony Tell ya what, give me an editor like Simmons supposedly has and I can stop annoying you with grammar infractions. Even I could spot the issues with Simmons' sentence. Actually, spelling is the bigger problem.
  6. Maybe they can just buy their way out of that group We're talking about the champion's league, all of these teams are loaded with money. Its not like Barca is poor or something...18 million pounds to buy Ronaldinho says plenty about their financial state. Real Madrid isn't doing too bad financially, either.

  8. If you leave Harvey off, I can't imagine a team being able to stash him away on their bench for an entire season. I don't think Petrick is highly regarded enough to be taken and stashed away. Fox, on the other hand, I could see sticking with a bad team.
  9. haha, the sponsor of the Baseball Reference page on Charlie Manuel has this to say: In other news, Dusty Baker's page has no sponsor (only $80 to trash him!)
  10. When you announce for the Phils for 35 years, you get a lot of practice at that sort of thing
  11. Probably calling him Bren... he's a knowledgeable baseball man and certainly doesn't have any speech impediments. I don't think he'd make a mistake either.
  12. No, but I don't believe Manny Ramirez is worth $20M per year and I don't believe Carlos Beltran is worth $17M per year. You either overpay for top talent, or you settle for second-tier players. The Cubs are apparently content doing the latter. Manny Ramirez is a top 5 offensive player. Barry Zito isn't a top 5 pitcher. I'd struggle to put him in the top 20. It's one thing to overpay a guy who's clearly in the top tier at his position. Zito isn't close to being a top pitcher. OK. I'm just saying that your rationale - that he isn't worth that money - has been used for just about every major free agent the last 2-3 years, including Beltran, who is one of the best CF in baseball. Hey, I know what you mean. I know Hendry likes to cheap out on impact FA and overpay mediocrity. I think what I'm saying is that if Hendry were to pay Zito $15m a year, it would be overpaying for mediocre production. I think the FA class this winter-especially the pitchers- is so weak that I won't blame Hendry for not chasing the "name" pitchers (Zito & Schmidt). It's going to be different than the Beltran thing. I think you can get similar production to Zito's for much less if you target the right guys. I think it's hardly fair to call Zito mediocre. He's very good, just not great.
  13. Well, the organization does at least one thing right. I was watching the game last night and was happy to see Phillies Hall of Fame announcer Harry Kalas leading the singing during the 7th inning stretch. He did it right - staying silent while the crowd sang the word "Cubbies" together. I lived near Philly most of my life and even though I am not a Phillies fan (my dad raised me to root for an even more incompetent ballclub), I spent many summer nights listening to Harry call Phillie games. I remember his calls during the 1993 NL Championship season and have heard his calls from the 1980 World Series winning team. I remember crying after hearing his poem to his best friend and broadcast partner of 27 years, Richie Ashburn. He's a classy man and probably my favorite announcer in all of sports. I know he has sang it before during games, and I'm glad the Cubs continue to have well-known visiting announcers perform "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

  16. Tune in as E-Patt leads Iowa to yet another victory... w/Eric: 5-0 w/o: 63-64 Basically, having him on your team is the difference between going undefeated, and being a below .500 club.
  17. How'd they miss out on the Neifi Perez sweepstakes?
  18. No. They're the Yankees of the EPL, and I can't root for the Yankees. That was a fun game to watch - for me, at least.
  19. LOL! No way, no how would the Cubs pay Zito 16-17 a year! We are talking the Cubs here... Nor should they. Zito isn't worth that much. Paying him more than $10m per is a stretch. First things first, lock down Z for the next 4 years and make sure RAM doesn't opt out of his contract...Zito will get more the 10 million a year for sure. He'll top out at 14-15 a year... Which means you look elsewhere to bolster your rotation. Zito and Schmidt may be the biggest names on the FA market, but they aren't necessarily the best values. This attitude basically means the Cubs would never land a top 5 free agent. Those guys are always going to have the Yankees, Red Sox, Mutts, Dodgers, and any other big-market team in the mix. If you're not willing to overpay for the top guys, you won't get them. And in Cub world, that means you get Jacque Jones as your RF.
  20. He's not ready to be promoted to the Cubs. :D How many people don't think he could outhit Cedeno in the big leagues right now?
  21. Yeah, he's like Wagner in 2000, when he was pitching with a messed up elbow and had an ERA over 6.
  22. Suzy Kolber recommends that you select Brett Favre.
  23. Some kind of elbow issue to O'Malley, Len's saying that he was on the DL earlier this year, I think, with tennis elbow. O'Malley coming out. That can't be right. He's a baseball player.
  24. I wish this loser wasn't on the team. Let a young guy have a crack at it, rather than wasting time with a washed up bum.
  25. Jones falls to a spectacular 2-86 (.023 BA) with 44 strikeouts after going down in the count 0-2. WTG Jacque.
