Who knows? A NY Times article suggested he might go to the next highest bidder. If the Red Sox didn't bid in good faith, I'd love to see MLB rule that Matsuzaka goes to the next highest bidder and the Red Sox have to pay Seibu the difference between their bid and the next higgest bid. But I doubt the penalty would have that much teeth. I saw Buster Olney talk about the situation the other day on ESPN. He said that the Red Sox are looking to plant their flag in the Far East, with baseball continuing to grow over there. Also, he said that once the Red Sox have his rights, they have all the leverage - either he signs with them, or stays in Japan. So, he said if they offer something like 4/$40M, he'd have to take it, even if he felt like he could do better as a free agent in the U.S. His opinion was that the Red Sox fully intend to sign him, and I agree.
