  1. hahaha, why'd they even bother putting this in the contract???
  2. Wells was good as recently as two years ago, but since then has had pretty significant health problems. I have no doubt that he'll be healthy this year and put up an ERA+ in the 120-130 range.
  3. Never been to Dino's... I live in Houserville so it shouldn't be hard for me to shoot over there and try it. You ever go to the buffet at Hi-Way Pizza? It's awesome... I love buffalo chicken pizza. When I win a gift card for stuff at Dante's Restaurants (won playing poker), I usually just end up using it on a Hi-Way pizza buffet. speaking of poker, I played a free tourney at Quaker Steak and Lube last Thursday (thanksgiving). Lots of fun. I came in like 19th out of 50 or so. Top prize was a seat in the QWK Rock tourney (whose winner gets a seat at an Atlantic City tourney). They do free hold em' every Monday and Thursday night. Cheap beer specials too (pints of Yuengling for $2) I've been to a couple of them, and I did want to go on Thanksgiving since I was stuck in town working, but my shift started at 9:30, so I couldn't play. Some of the people there are hilariously bad. I saw somebody call an all-in with 54 on a flop of AAQ. Anyway, PM me sometime if you're going and if I'm going to be there, I'll look for you.

  5. He already plays a plus major-league CF, and projects to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Gotcha. I was just under the impression that he wasn't your typical "speed/range/glove" center fielder. So more like Damon than Pierre? A lefty Mike Cameron with some extra speed and not as much patience at the plate. That's what we're all excited about? No kidding. Now Soriano in CF and Eric Patterson at 2B - THAT I can live with.
  6. it comes in a pizza box... you have to open it to see what it looks like oh yeah, the trophy will also be overpriced, and you'll be able to get a significantly better trophy for a cheaper price from any non-chain, Italian-owned pizzeria I bet it tastes better than their pizza I don't think their pizza is that bad. I do remember back when Papa John's was just starting to build their name, their pizza tasted better than it does now. Even now it's adequate, but you can get two pizzas at someplace like Brother's for the prize of one at Papa John's. It's really not worth buying from PJ's unless you are buying for a huge group - if I remember correctly from a Special Olympics pizza party, the price goes way down if you get ten or more. Regardless of that, Domino's sucks. Brooklyn-style pizza? Come on. You know what style of pizza they eat in Brooklyn? NOT DOMINO'S. I've found that you can get better pizza from local pizzerias than the big chains, and a lot of the time it's cheaper too.

  8. Jason Marquis is the really puzzling one. He's always been way too hittable for a sinkerball pitcher, and last year he was a train wreck. Plus, the Cards, who are an intelligent and well-run organization, apparently have no interest in him. That should tell the Cubs (a stupid, poorly-run organization) something. My experience with watching the Cards, when they decide to give up on a player the rest of the league should run screaming. How is that JD Drew guy doing? The exception that proves the rule. And from an attitude standpoint, the Cards were vindicated on Drew. There's a reason he keeps bouncing around. yeah, the Cards have made a few mistakes in personnel, but I'd have to agree that they usually know when it's time to cut a guy loose. The Cubs seem to grab a lot more guys whose careers come to a screeching halt within a week or two of signing on.
  9. Well, players have been prosecuted for on the field offenses, and Cobb (btw, I just noticed that I spelled his name "Tie") was known to have spiked players. But that's ticky-tack. Then again, nobody has proven that the guys you want out of the Hall have used steroids, and it wasn't illegal to use them in MLB at the time.
  10. I drink mostly skim as well, but I don't like it unless it's from that dairy. They also have awesome 2 percent strawberry milk. Whole milk is horrible. Why not just pour sour cream on your cereal?
  11. I'm just not convinced the future has been expensed. The talent is all still intact. And if any of those guys were any good, they will also be cheap for a good while longer, so that value can makeup for overpaying older guys. There is definite risk to the future. But you can't win in this game without taking risks. You have to be in it to win it. I know you have to take risks to win, but this is a bubble market and the Cubs needed a major rebuilding. It's an exceptionally awful time for the Cubs to have a GM who has to win now to save his job. Not really. The Cubs are a big-market team, and they're finally going to act like it. A team like the Red Sox usually has one or two bad contracts on their hands, and it's not like they're crippled by that. The farm system is not good, and if the Cubs wait until it's rebuilt, they'll just be bad for a long time.

  13. I voted Skim, just because of the skim milk that they have at Meyer Dairy. I dunno if you've ever gotten milk there, but do it. I don't drink supermarket milk any more.
  14. Haha, Florida State will be playing in the freakin' Emerald Bowl (against UCLA)
  15. On further review (DVR): "I know the Cubs have offered him a three-year deal", and the graphic on the screen said "Reportedly offered 3 years, $44M deal by Cubs"
  16. Manny to the White Sox is possible? Or did that refer to Drew? When talking about Manny, he referred to Boston getting Drew done soon (or first maybe), then referred to the White Sox as possible destination for Manny. He talked about SF, but said he didn't think they'd have what it takes. Yeah... it seemed like he was of the opinion that the Red Sox are determined to deal Ramirez. The two teams most rumored to be interested are the Giants, who are interested, but don't have that much to offer. Then there's the Dodgers, who would also be interested, but he doesn't think they'd deal three good prospects (although if I were them, I would). So he was throwing out other options, and the one he put out there was the White Sox.
  17. I'm going to believe Bruce on this. well, the graphic that ESPN put up said that the Cubs had offered 3 years, $44M, which is exactly what was in the SF newspaper this morning. So, I'm sure Gammons didn't come up with that on his own. I'd like to think that he didn't just repeat what he heard secondhand from a newspaper - that's not the sort of thing a Hall of Fame baseball reporter should do - but who knows.
  18. The only thing I'm worried about in that deal was that a couple of weeks ago a report came out that said that the Indians had no interest in Cedeno. well, i'm sure his awesome winter ball numbers will change their opinion of him
  19. well, all Gammons said was that the Cubs have offered him a 3 year deal, and he things Seattle or the Cubs are real possibilities
  20. Likewise, you can't develop all 25 players on your own, and you have to plug in guys like Soriano, Lee and ARam when you can. yup, that's the right formula - unfortunately, the Cubs just haven't produced the talent to use this method. Really need to develop some position prospects - Cubs have been so woeful at doing that the past 20 years. Eric Hinske is a super-stud. gary scott, baby!
  21. Gammons doesn't think the White Sox will get involved for Manny. Doesn't think the Giants have enough to get him, even though they do want him, and he doesn't think that the Dodgers' scouting director will be willing to give up three good prospects.

  23. gammons on now, talking about HOF ballot and Mark McGwire - doesn't think he'll get in and said he doesn't think he'll get 50% of the vote
  24. League-average OBP for a second baseman, at just over $3M per? Absolute bargain. Hell, Juan Pierre can't put up an average OBP and he'll be making three times that much.
