    Wheeler is electric, but he's one injury away from setting the franchise back a bit after losing Castro. I think it makes sense for both sides to fill their holes through free agency. There are plenty of starting pitchers and shorstops available for only money this winter. Lester, Scherzer, Shields, Liriano, Maeda, etc for us and Hardy, Lowry, Hanley for them. Makes more sense for each organization than giving up Starlin and Wheeler. They are available for "only money," but in the case of some of those names it will be a [expletive] load of money (like 25% of the Cubs' present payroll capacity), so if someone like Scherzer or Lester signs and then blows out his elbow or shoulder, that's a pretty big problem.

    Meh. Ryan Howard was really good for a while, and wasted one of his peak years waiting for Jim Thome to be traded. Otherwise there are two busts and a third guy who was drafted the same year as Bryant, so way too early to say what he will be.

    Tony Lazzeri hit .355 with 60 home runs and 222 RBI as a 21 year old in the Pacific Coast League, but he was unaffiliated with a major league org at the time (he signed with the Yankees and was on that 1927 team with the monster offense). Ron Kittle hit 50 home runs for Edmonton in the PCL as a 24 year old.

    Head coaching? You mean manager? There haven't been that many pitching coaches who have stepped up to be managers. It's not like defensive and offensive coordinators in football, who become really highly regarded and then get ahead coaching gig. The main thing they would have to worry about with Bosio being poached is just money, and I would hope that if they value him highly, that they'd just match any offer from another MLB organization.

    They also have Russell as an asset. If he's still a top prospect next year (very likely) and the Cubs reach late July and view themselves as World Series contenders (probably unlikely), they'd have the option of dealing Russell as the centrepiece for a top starting pitcher.

    yeah, secret sauce was based on k-rate though. whatever i'm thinking of was based on velocity, not k-rate. plus i don't really understand what they're arguing in that article. yeah, 54% isn't significantly better than a coin flip, but from 2006 to 2009 there were only 28 playoff series. why would you take a formula that you thought might have been significant, based on like 2 decades of results, and then throw it away because it only gets 15 out of 28 right over the course of 4 seasons. maybe the secret sauce was garbage, but i don't see the harm in continuing to study its results, or to incorporate more or different variables in the sauce in trying to find a trend.

    that's actually really close to kris bryant's slash line as a professional. :lol: speaking of which, bryant probably has to be a shoo-in for BA minor league player of the year, right? he's first in OPS, tied for first in home runs, second in runs scored, around 6th in RBI, and is a very highly-regarded prospect. there have been some other good hitters, but nobody i can see that has been in bryant's league. plus most of the top pitching prospects have been either injured or not that effective this year.

    yeah, i think that bashing him for a low OPS as a 20 year old with less than 100 plate appearances in AAA is pretty silly. especially knowing what baez does for his first month or two most times he reaches a new level.

    is he really "so overhyped"? he's 8th in WAR among position players since his rookie season. i think he's just a really damn good player who is recognized as such.

    just reading through some comments on internet stories about this, it is amazing the excuse making people are making for this guy. I think even if he is completely innocent(which is a real looooong stretch after watching the video), it is hard to imagine him racing today. yeah, people are saying you should never jump out of your car on an active racetrack - which is true - but i've seen plenty of sportscenter videos of angry rednecks barging out of their cars and confronting other drivers during nascar races. sometimes there were fistfights or sometimes people showed up to drag the angry guy away. what i've never seen is one driver flooring it and hitting the other guy with his car.

    Is this true? I thought it had been pretty well disproven. the last i saw, there was a good correlation between teams with hard-throwing front line pitchers, and playoff success. teams with softer tossing starters tended to fare more poorly. i forget where i read it, though.

    regardless of whether he dies or not, you can't just run someone over. i don't see how he could avoid jail when he obviously hit the guy on purpose with his car. that being said, he will have rich lawyers who will probably convince some jury that it was an accident.

    dillon maples: 2.1 ip, 5 h, 9 r, 5 bb, 1 k, 5 wp. not so good! boise is down 15-1 in the fourth inning. in happier news, jeferson mejia has pitched well (4 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 2 bb, 5 k). eloy jimenez hasn't played since august 4th, for some reason.

    i would quibble with these points. hamels has never suffered a serious arm injury, and his issue in spring training was shoulder tendonitis. he had an MRI that came back clean, so the problem was treated with rest and anti-inflammatories. it didn't take him long to get back to full health and he has pitched really well this year. i've had shoulder tendonitis in the past (from swimming), and that's not a major concern - not like the dreaded forearm strain or fraying of the rotator cuff. it's not a structural issue. both scherzer (2012) and lester (2011) have had minor arm isues in the past, so i wouldn't say that hamels is at any greater risk because of minor spring training shoulder tendonitis. as for hamels being worked hard, he's had only 7 starts in which he's thrown 110+ pitches, compared to lester 13 for lester and scherzer. sandberg is a lousy manager, but hamels' workload hasn't been too irresponsible, aside from a couple of starts.

    yeah, fab five was the first time i remember the black socks and sneakers thing becoming popular. which was like 20 years ago, so if people are still doing it now... may want to just get used to it.
