Wasn't he on a lot of [expletive] teams that didn't win many games? I mean, wins back then obviously meant you were a really good pitcher. that's true, but he also issued an absurd number of walks throughout much of his career. i don't think anybody really paid much attention to pitch counts back then, but the number of pitches he threw in some seasons must have been outrageous. in 1974 he started 41 games, threw 26 complete games and issued 202 walks. he faced 1392 batters that season, and 569 of those at bats ended in a walk or a strikeout, so you could assume that he had a lot of high-pitch plate appearances against. a rough guess of 4.2 pitches per batter faced would put ryan at about 6000 pitches thrown, which is about 2000 more pitches than anybody throws in a season these days. 150 pitch outings probably would have been pretty common for him.
