    I don't have my 2014 prospect handbook handy, but I think I remember most of the top 6 or 8 picks making most of the BA writers' lists. Schwarber might have been regarded as an overdraft, but top 5 picks who reach high A and OPS over 1.000 are going to be on most top 50 lists, even with some defensive concerns.

    I still am kind of in disbelief that he's a member of the Cub organization. 11 home runs in a month and a half, as one of the youngest players in a pitcher's league. And he's a shortstop. We have effectively been anesthetized to the pains of any fan who follows a normal minor league organization. It's never been like this before. It may never be like this again. When this wears off, reality is going to hit and hit hard. I kind of trust the Cubs' scouting and player development system (never thought I would say that) to at least keep them around the middle of the pack, considering that the Red Sox were regularly among the top third of all systems despite usually drafting late in each round. That being said, some of the tools they exploited (spending heavily on amateur talent, piling up compensation picks that other teams undervalued) are no longer available. So my optimism may be unwarranted.

    I don't think the strikeouts are unexpected or alarming at this stage. It's just depressing to watch.

    Erik Bedard Thanks - I knew it was Seattle just couldn't recall They also got Chris Tillman, who has been a solid starter for 3 years now, and George Sherrill, who served as a useful reliever for a couple of seasons. The Mariners were widely criticized for giving up too much and, lo and behold, they ended up giving up too much. Yes, Bill Bavasi was an awful GM.

    Tennessee is going to be pretty rad next year, assuming no trades. Outfield of Almora and McKinney, Schwarber probably splitting time between LF and C, Vogelbach playing 1B. I guess maybe Hannemann stays at Daytona to start the year because there isn't room for him in Tennessee.

    Baez really is going to have the most ridiculous line to end the year. Like high teens in home runs and almost 100 strikeouts in a third of a season. I'm also warming to the idea that if Baez ends up long term at 2B, it will almost be impossible for him to NOT be a productive player. He should be at least average defensively there - probably better than average in reality - but the offensive bar is so low for 2B that even if he is striking out 200 times and has an OBP of like .280, he will be an asset because he is hitting 30-40 home runs a year.

    That would be awful. You would think they would have at least one non-derpy voice there, similar to Karl Ravech having to argue with mouth breathers like Reynolds and Kruk on Baseball Tonight.

    less power, more speed, more willing to walk, imo I figured more patience, but I'm surprised at the speed. Cool; thanks. If you want someone more exact, maybe Victorino? That's a pretty good one. He's going to strike out more than victorino, though.

    All this stuff is stupid. They're trying to put band aids on a ridiculously broken system. Just make them part of the draft.

    Pretty much everybody still had Correa and Buxton ahead of Russell, so it remains to be seen whether Russell's strong post-trade play is enough to bump him ahead of a pair of guys who have been hurt for most of the second half.
