  10. I definitely disagree with this, considering that the people who don't do it are more likely to work out. There's a difference between being married and being happily married. 25 years of marriage doesn't mean much if you're miserable and the only reason you're still together is because your religion frowns upon divorce. Guess it depends on your definition of "working out." I think that the vast majority of people who don't want to be together, aren't together. I'm aware the there are exceptions, but I don't know many Catholic couples who stayed together just because the Catholic church frowns upon marriage. You only get one life; most people don't want to live theirs in misery.

  13. This has been the Cubs' mentality for so many years. We have a good minor league player but we're not positive that he's the answer, so let's go out and blow a few mil on some retread who will put up, at best, marginally better than the min-salary guy. While one can't declare Soto the next Josh Gibson based purely on this year, it's not like he's had a .500 BABIP and just dinked and dunked his way to a big year. He has 26 homers. He hit a ball almost 400 feet off the wall tonight, and drilled another one just about that far to left, but it hooked a little to the left of the pole. He may not be a high average guy - given his previous years, it's certainly possible that he settles around .250 - but he's always shown pretty good patience, and he doesn't strike out at an alarmingly-high rate. So give the guy the starting job next year. I think he'll do well. But even if he doesn't set the world on fire, I'd expect him to put up about a .330 OBP and around a .700 OPS, which is fine from a guy playing a defense-first position, and playing it pretty well for a very cheap price.
  14. in case you were wondering, the cubs looked just as pathetic in person as they did on your TV sets. And you didn't pay $20 plus parking, gas and food to go to the game. Or drive 3+ hours through the highways of Pennsylvania that been handled with as much incompetence as possible PennDot - that's another rant for another day. On the good side - not that there was much here - Geovany Soto looked very good at the plate. He showed real nice patience and hit three balls very hard - the one in the 8th looked like a bomb off the bat but just hooked foul. He was about the only guy who was punishing mistakes tonight; Gorzelanny didn't look that good, but of course it's the Cubs' inept lineup against a LHP, so what did you expect? Soto HAS to be the everyday catcher next year. Do it. Please.
  15. Lou Holtz is a ND homer, that's not exactly surprising. Beano Cook would probably pick Pitt to beat USC. In other news, I've never, ever seen downtown as nuts as it was tonight. We took a drive through on the way to drop a friend off after our trip to pittsburgh. A Chinese restaurant with a tiny bar area (about 4 people can fit there) had a line at 1:50 AM. Ohio State 2005 was crazy, and Arts Fest - a summer thing where some people come to look at art and everyone else comes to get drunk - is always nuts, but tonight was another level. I figure about 250,000 people will be in State College at around kickoff time tomorrow evening. That's about 3 times the normal population. There isn't a hotel room available within 75 miles.
  16. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/09/07/drug.probe/index.html Thanks. This is starting to get big. least surprising news ever (aside from a crappy bar downtown getting shut down by the dept of health on wednesday). these guys had a chance to make millions by getting bigger, faster and stronger. the fact that most of them are cheating is pretty much what i expected.
  17. between king and fielder, the sausages are going to be verrrrrrrry nervous during the races
  18. it's true that the divorce rates are higher for those who cohabitate before marriage, but this is almost certainly due to the fact that the people are more likely to cohabitate (people with financial issues, for example) are more likely to divorce anyway, regardless of cohabitation. I wouldn't say it's "almost certainly" due to that - I'll share my thoughts on that a little later.
  19. He was telling the truth. There's a big difference in the divorce rates - people who live together pre-marriage are almost 50% more likely to get divorced than people who don't. There are a couple of caveats though - one, if the person who you marry is the only romantic partner you've lived with, then the chance of divorce is significantly lower. And, if the marriage lasts more than 7 years, then the difference between couples co-habitating before marriage and those who didn't is just about zero. Now this begs the question as to whether cohabitation is the reason for the higher divorce rate, or whether there are other factors involved - for example, cohabitating couples are less likely to be religious, and non-religious people have a higher divorce rate. They're also, on average, people of lower income, and divorce is higher among people with less wealth. There's also the social upbringing issue. Some would argue that these things have more to do with the higher divorce rate than the cohabitation itself.
  20. The "apartment lease" thread in social made me think of this question. My brother and his fiancee have been living together for two years now, much to the consternation of my parents. I also had a long conversation about this issue with a good friend, a Jesuit priest at Holy Cross, who shared his thoughts with me. The question is, would you live, or have you lived, with a person you're dating before you get married? I'll share the contents of the talk I had with my Jesuit friend, because I thought they were very interesting.
  21. gist of these sarcastic comments = our minor league system sucks
  22. cardinal fans are really desperate to make this seem okay. It's not. But take comfort in the fact that most major leaguers are, or at least were, cheating at the time.
  23. this is the equivalent of saying "i'm not a fan of signing free agent relievers" because if a good relief pitcher is getting offered 1 year by the cubs and 3 years by another team, he's going to take the deal that offers him more security. If you're going with that plan, you'd better have a hell of a minor league system that churns out one or two carlos marmols every year.
  24. that's way better than ted williams, i have to admit
