  1. paul mcguire saying about notre dame's offensive line on a play: "they did not block anybody." uh paul have you seen either of notre dame's first two games, or this first half for that matter? They haven't blocked anybody all year.
  2. i'd love a-rod but how is he going to fit under this team's salary structure? i don't know the numbers, but between lee, ramirez, soriano, zambrano, dempster, lilly and marquis, there is a crapload of money committed to a small # of guys.
  3. to be fair, he's one of the best-fielding shortstops in the game, something you couldn't say about neifi. But yeah, his bat is atrocious. I'd be fine with giving him $1M to be a backup and spot starter, but not close to $2M. And if he's your starting SS you've really got a black hole offensively. btw i can't believe he's 33. I'm getting old.
  4. How bout putting Dempster in a non-save situation??? Terrible decision tonight. Thank God it worked out. Is it too much to ask a guy to get the job done with a 4 run lead? Then if Lou doesn't put Desmpster in, out come the "Dempster needs regular work" excuses. dempster has been pitching just about every game; i dont think you're going to hear that excuse
  5. (a) and (b). He has a hole in his swing and big leaguers are bound throw offspeed pitch after offspeed pitch now that it's been exposed. I can't help but think the HGH controversy has gotten to his head too. He has struggled under pressure in the past too. It'll be a huge test for him, for some hitters it's the toughest thing to overcome. As Thome gets to #500, beyond the raw power, his greatest strength was his mental toughness at the plate. He's adapted so many times to how the pitchers have pitched differently to him throughout his career. Thome always had the patient approach though (.418 minor league OBP). Ankiel may well have as much raw power as Thome, but his strike zone judgment is way behind Jim's. If raw power was all you needed, Ryan Harvey and Brian Dopirak would be kicking ass for the big club right now. Thome is better at adapting than most players, yes, but he also started with a much better understanding of what to swing at and what to let go.
  6. it's not like an NIU degree is toilet paper. If he's motivated and smart enough, he'll be able to find a good job regardless of where he went to college. To some people, the chance to play a sport is really important, and if he didn't want to sit on the bench for 3 more years at ND, more power to him. I didn't decide on where I went to school based on where I would be good enough to be on the swim team, but I swam all four years at Holy Cross and if I'd gone somewhere else and not been able to swim, I would've missed out on a great experience.
  7. we sure as hell better beat the deadskins this week
  8. (a) and (b). He has a hole in his swing and big leaguers are bound throw offspeed pitch after offspeed pitch now that it's been exposed. I can't help but think the HGH controversy has gotten to his head too. He has struggled under pressure in the past too. you're probably right, but i'm kinda hoping it's (d) all of the above
  9. I said this after week 1. He's long gone. can't say I blame him. If he wants to play college football... key word being play... it's pretty obvious that he's not going to get the chance at ND, with Joe Montana Jr. already starting as a freshman. I've heard it's already a done deal. Awesome get for NIU :D i know it's a longshot, but boy would it be awesome if he turned out to be a better player than claussen
  10. Did you not just see how this game ended? The Cubs are not going to make anything easy on us I didn't, actually. I'm on a self-imposed fast from watching Cubs games until Monday, which started after that disgusting extra innings loss to Houston. But hey...I can dream, can't I? :D hey keep not watching the cubs, it seems to be working
  11. Who the eff is that? I remember him... he hit a lot of homers in the minors one year while in the Tigers' minor league system, but BA considered it flukish because the ballpark he was hitting in was perfectly suited to his stroke. Considering that it's about 5 years later and nobody knows who he is, I guess BA was right.
  12. there are two relievers on this team who have been statistically better than dempster... if you're only okay with them pitching in close games then their arms are going to fall off
  13. had that one cued up for about 15 minutes, huh? now excuse me while i go vomit
  14. i'm laughing and furious at the same time... i think the cubs are driving me mad
  15. just wouldn't be like the cubs to make it easy
  16. all on a 3 run shot by Pujols, or was that extras? pretty sure that was 10th inning
