  1. That's to be expected when you consider he has been catching mostly Prior.
  2. Except Walker gets more extra base hits than Furcal, so he doesn't always have to steal a base to get into scoring position. I'm not sure that kind of money is worth some stolen bases. Also, the Braves don't want him back. If they felt he was that important to their team, I think they'd find a way to keep him around. They usually aren't wrong about these types of things.
  3. I agree with you. He's very valuable as a trade chip, but I'm beginning to think that Hendry wants to go in another direction for 2B. He may be satisfied to go with Hairston, Cedeno or even Nomar. If he wants to make a deal, the guys I think Hendry is interested in trading for are: Soriano and Castillo. And, I do think that if LA makes Jeff Kent available that the Cubs have the cash to take his contract on for one season - kind of a Baker and Kent one year and done reunion. Aug. 31 is Wed - let's say if Hendrydeals him in the next 72 hours. Walker>Soriano Kent's decline is inevitable, and I could definitely see it happening while he's wearing a Cubs' uniform. Castillo wouldn't be a bad option though, but he makes about $7 mil/year.
  4. It would be so Cubs-like, wouldn't it? Finally get rid of Dusty and end up getting a guy who is just as bad as Dusty to replace him.
  5. But if both Nomar and Walker are healthy, I'd say they have the best offensive middle infield in the league, so I think that more than makes up for the defense. I have to disagree. I think improving the defense should be the #1 priority. We already have Barrett at C and Ramirez at 3rd. They need to get stronger up the middle. Cubs are 8th in the league in runs. They need to be adding offense. Not getting rid of it.
  6. But if both Nomar and Walker are healthy, I'd say they have the best offensive middle infield in the league, so I think that more than makes up for the defense.
  7. It's to the point that I could care less if Walker goes as well. SHip him off for a prospect and play Hairston next year. If we swap Walker's production for Hairston, we will take a step down in secondbase production for 2006. I wonder if Garciaparra is ready to try 2B in 2006. A troika of Cedeno at SS, Nomar at 2B and Neifi! as backup would work well. Ronny could gradually break into the bigs, and you could rest Nomar to keep him healthy. Besides, having Nomar at 2B would give time for EPatt to develop. But can Nomar outproduce Walker? At this point in his career, I'm not sure he can. So you'd basically be paying shortstop money for a 2B when Walker can give you the same production for less money without changing positions.
  8. I agree. People have issues with his game calling I guess. Even though Larry calls the game from the dugout.
  9. I'd take Nomar over Furcal, Dempster over Wagner, and I'd replace Novoa and Wuertz with one good SU guy. I'd make Greenberg the starting CF next year and put Pie in AAA for the season. The rest I like. WTG! :D
  10. How often do FA closers actually work out? I really can't think of anyone who wound up being worth the money.
  11. Blanco's game calling has not impressed me. If people want to be blame Barrett for the struggles of this pitching staff, Blanco can also be blamed for Prior's struggles. He's not having a great year. That said, I think we can get a lot more than that for Walker and Barrett. I'd want at least one of their good pitching prospects.
  12. C'mon, dude, I play more young guys in spring training than anybody else, dude. Half my roster is rookies, dude. You haven't seen my track record.
  13. I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure it will happen some time this series.
  14. I say half those FAs turn out to be busts, and the Cubs miss the playoffs. Again. And give Furcal SS money to play 2B? Why?
  15. At first glance, I thought he was Sidney Ponson.
  16. When he was filling in for Walker earlier this season, his defense wasn't all that good IIRC. He has been injury prone over the course of his career, and he doesn't even create that many XBHs for a 2B.
  17. I'd rather have Lugo at SS if anything.
  18. What positive things? The grand slam in St. Louis and a few other big hits don't make up for all the other times that he has sucked. He's not a great backup infielder. A $100 mil team could have a better backup than Neifi. What makes it worse is that he is used incorrectly.
  19. But why does there have to be 2 automatic outs in the lineup? I never understood this. Over the course of a full season, the offense that Walker/Nomar provide more than makes up for any defensive problem. They simple create more runs, so i don't see the point.
  20. Walker is a very good hitter, but very below avg. defensively. Neifi is a defensive upgrade over Walker. The problem here is batting Neifi 2nd. This year, Walker has been better defensively at second base. Walker is a better hitter against LH than Neifi, this year, the last three years, etc. There's no justification for him to be out there besides the inane L/R argument. Walker is a defensive hack! People on this board tend to favor the offensive skill over the defensive one. Maybe they are playing too much fantasy baseball. Defense is very important. I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs acquire some more defensive skilled players in 06, especially in the infield. Imagine a MI of Hudson(Tor) & A.Gonzo(Fl)! IIRC, both are FA's Awesome. Then the Cubs will still struggle to score runs, but it won't matter because defense will be great.
  21. Walker is a very good hitter, but very below avg. defensively. Neifi is a defensive upgrade over Walker. The problem here is batting Neifi 2nd. Walker vs. lefties this year: .368/.403/.647/1.050 Neifi vs. lefties this year: .290/.317/.490/.807 I'd say Walker's bat makes up for his glove. Neifi is not as spectacular defensively as most people make him out to be anyway.
