  1. Optimistically, I'm looking at it as a cost cutting move to free up salary ($3M) to go after someone else. Money's tight, so I'm going to reserve comment on this specific move until I see the rest of the moves. Hoops
  2. http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/mariners/story/198525.html Here's an article earlier in the week speculating about a Sexson move. This one mentions Sexson for Padilla.
  3. A source on the East coast told me this morning that the following rumor made the rounds in Orlando earlier this week: Cubs trade Jason Marquis (2 years $16.25M) to the Mariners Mariners trade Richie Sexson (1 year $14M) to the Giants Giants trade Randy Winn (2 years $16.25M) to the Cubs No idea if the rumor is still active, or died on the vine. Hoops
  4. I heard it might be more like 3 years and $13M.
  5. But, we do all agree that the Cubs need to upgrade offensively at SS, right? So, if it's not Matsui, and it's not ARod, and DeRosa can't make the shift, who is it?
  6. Okay, so maybe we're back to Jacque and Murton platooning in RF. I thought their game plan was to acquire a left-handed corner outfielder, let Jacque start in CF, let Pie do some more hitting in the minors and then re-visit the CF situation at the trading deadline.
  7. That's pretty vague. Are they interested in Jacque if the Cubs pay his entire salary? If they don't have to give anything up to get him? If the Cubs pay most of his salary? Unfortunately, no details given on the report I heard at 1:00 PM. Unlike last offseason though, I sense the Cubs are not in any rush to move him unless they get a really good offer. It sure sounds like Jones is penciled in as the everyday CF to start the season.
  8. Bruce Levine is reporting on ESPN AM 1000 that Cubs officials have told him that there are 3 or 4 teams showing interest in Jacque Jones. Bruce did not say which teams, or what kind of players the Cubs could get in return. Hoops
  9. CR, Just a guess on my part: if he signs Wood, he won't look at a closer. If he doesn't sign Wood, all bets are off.
  10. What do you see in Barmes that would make you think giving up a 25 year old lefty with a sub 4.00 ERA would be a fair deal? I personally don't like the idea, but maybe I'm missing something.
  11. My daughter and her friends were "screaming" in the car, but did I hear Bruce Levine correctly: Ryan Dempster will be in the rotation next season? :-k Hoops
  12. I think that will happen too - like you said. Where do you think Torii Hunter ends up? Rangers?
  13. The Angels have 6 guys (either under contract or entering final year of arbitration eligibility in 2008) that they potentially can wave goodbye to after the 2008 season and free up $48M in payroll for 2009. I'm beginning to understand why so many people think the Angels are the favorities to get ARod. Vlad Guerrero ($14.5M in 2008, $15.0M or $3.0M buyout in 2009) Garret Anderson ($12.0M in 2008, $14.0M or $3.0M buyout in 2009) Orlando Cabrera ($9.0M in 2008, Free agent) John Lackey ($7.0M in 2008, $9.0M or $0.5M buyout in 2009) Francisco Rodriguez (arbitration eligible in 2008 - predict he can get $9.5M after $7M in 2007) Juan Rivera (arbiitration eligible in 2008 - predict he can get $2.5M after $2M in 2007) Even if they pick up the options on Guerrero and Lackey, they've still freed up $27.5M in 2009. I'll research a few more teams, but the Angels look like they've got the money to do it. Hoops
  14. I'm worried about losing Fukodome to the Giants. They have money to spend, need someone to energize their fan base with Barry gone, and can provide a good environment for a Japanese player.
  15. Can he play CF? Or, does Soriano need to be moved to RF?
  16. If we can't sign Fukodome to play RF, how about Marquis and Jones for Brian Giles? Salaries are a near wash for 2008. The $9M Marquis makes in 2009 would replace the salary the Pads are paying Greg Maddux in 2008 (Maddog has a player option for $8.75M in 2008). Away stats for Giles in 2007: .299 .374 .496 .870 (ave obp slg ops).
  17. 4 years and $56M left on his deal - flat $14M per season . Boston (or a trading team) does have some opt out options if Drew is on the DL for an extended time due to his shoulder. Personally, I would pass.
  18. What if they asked for Marquis, Marshall and Pie?
  19. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20071104/news_1s4padres.html "The Padres were rebuffed when they asked about Cubs center fielder Felix Pie in May – talks that, had they progressed, likely would have included shortstop Khalil Greene." :-k
  20. Marquis has 2 years and $16.2M left on his deal. It would seem that trading him would free up some necessary cash to get the additional bat (RF or SS) we need to improve this club. There does seem to be some indication that Hendry is contemplating moving him. Is it easier said than done? Of course. But, I don't view trading him as an impossible task. And I'm not talking about the Cubs picking up the entire contract. I'm thinking there has to be a way to trade Marquis and pick up no more than $4 of the $16.2. What are some of the ideas we can come up with to help Hendry? E.g.: the Mets and Rockies look like they are looking for starters. The D-Rays and O's have talked about wanting a veteran who can pitch 190+ innings. Maybe the Yankees will be interested if Clemens and Pettitte both walk. - Marquis and Jones for Damon - Marquis and Cedeno for Tejada - Marquis for Delgado (assuming the Mets get ARod and move Wright to 1B), and then the Cubs flip Delgado to the Angels for something good Hoops
  21. to be fair he said tuesday at the earliest. He also said out of Chicago. Might be about the White Sox. Maybe it's the news about Kenny Williams talking to Torii Hunter.
  22. What is implied in Gammons' blog and other reports I've read is that Cabrera is a 3B/1B kind of guy. That is why teams like the Yankees/Red Sox/Angels/Dodgers are most talked about (plus they have great high ceiling prospects). They all need a 3B, and some could use a better 1B. From everything I've read about his weight issues and lack of speed, it seems he is not capable of playing OF anymore.
  23. St. Louis is intriguing. After the 2008 season, they can clear ~$28M in payroll by saying goodbye to Edmonds, Looper, Encarnacion, Mulder and Isringhausen (and factoring in the salary bumps to Carpenter, Piniero and Kennedy). They could afford ARod starting in 2009. But can they afford him in 2008? Only if they move 2 or 3 those 2008 free agents this offseason, or traded Scott Rolen. Hoops
  24. I was hoping Atlanta might take Marshall, Cedeno and another pitching prospect. Don't know if that would fly for the Braves. I'd like for the Cubs to keep Theriot as a utility guy. Who else is in the market to upgrade at SS this offseason? Cards? Astros? White Sox? Giants? Nats? Reds? Blue Jays? A's? Twins?
