  1. I believe Byung-Hyum Kim is Korean, so I don't think that would work culturally. Otsuka, maybe.
  2. You're not alone - I see value in Taguchi platooning with Pie against tough lefties as well as being a 5th outfielder/mentor to Fukudome. I'd prefer Taguchi over Angel Pagan, Sam Fuld or Ronny Cedeno. This is your bench as of today if you sign Taguchi. LH- Ward RH- Murton RH- Cedeno RH- Blanco RH- Taguchi UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Except BBB, I don't expect to see Murton in a Cubs uniform. His spot on your bench will be taken by Mike Sweeney.

  4. I was afraid you came in here to say that. BTW the Brewers are hot on the trail of Kenny Lofton. If they get him, they will move Hall to 3B and Braun to LF.
  5. If the Cubs want Blanton, they better hurry. My brother in NYC just heard Buster Olney on some station saying the Mets just offered: Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman, and Kevin Mulvey. And Olney thinks Beane will strongly consider it.
  6. George Ofman on WSCR AM-670 is reporting that the Cubs are looking into signing Taguchi.
  7. Buys out his first year of free agency, and has other incentive clauses. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3163167
  8. Barry Rozner mentioned Blanton in his column today as well. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=98969 Maybe the pursuit of him is picking up real steam...
  9. Just saw it on the crawler (via Jerry Crasnick). It said something about an option for the 3rd year, but couldn't tell if it was team/player/mutual/vesting.
  10. I recall late last summer even when Lilly was pitching very well, Rogers thought of him as a #3. And maybe that's accurate.
  11. Besides Haren and Santana (#1 for sure), are there any #2 starters currently being actively shopped or even rumored to be on the block? Does Bedard qualify as a #2? Hoops
  12. In the same blog where Phil discussed the Orlando Cabrera options, he made this statement reacting to the Dan Haren trade to Arizona: "Looking at NL rosters right now, the serious contenders, in order, are Arizona, Los Angeles, the Cubs (who could be first if they had a No. 2 starter), Milwaukee and the Mets." http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/12/fast-food-for-1.html
  13. I agree the Cubs should get another starter. As I said in another thread, I am not comfortable with the rotation after Zambrano, Lilly and Hill. If the Cubs don't get a left-handed middle infielder (e.g. Roberts) and leave DeRosa as the starting 2B, I would like them to get a better bench player (from a power hitting standpoint) to go along with Ward. For example, if the money was reasonable, I wouldn't mind seeing Mike Sweeney signed, if he's willing to accept a reserve role. Hoops
  14. Like I said, just a gut call. I'd rather have 3 righties and 2 lefties pitching to the likes of Tejada, CLee, Pujols, Braun, Hart, Bay, etc...
  15. His groundball to flyball ratio was 1.58 last year - 1.28 in his career. I think the A's are busting their team up, gathering prospects with high ceilings and playing for 2010. Blanton is first year arbitration eligible - his salary could go from $400K to $3M. But he will be under control for 3 seasons. Beane could probably get a good package of prospects for him. I'd trade 3 prospects for him.
  16. So, which pitcher gets the next "big" deal: Silva or Lohse or Colon? And, which team gives the deal out? The Mariners?
  17. Just a gut call, but I really don't want 3 lefties in the rotation. I'd rather have the Cubs pursue Blanton - he'd be under team control for 3 seasons.
  18. Funny, you say lucky. My first reaction was "wow, they have solidified themselves as the best team in the NL."
  19. I wonder if that sets up a deal between Dodgers and Cardinals to swap Juan Pierre for Scott Rolen. Both players have $36M left on their deals.
  20. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/12473986.html "Note: The Cubs are interested in trading for closer Joe Nathan if he's available."
  21. The guy had a .350 OBP last year (.370 against left-handed pitching) and started 41 games in CF. Although he's 38, I wonder if the Cubs might sign him to a 1 year-deal to platoon with Pie, but more importantly, to give Fukudome a teammate to talk to everyday in his native tongue as he's getting used to his first year in the States. Hoops
  22. Fukudome would have someone to talk to.
  23. Straight up for Marquis? Except we don't need another lefty.
  24. With the recent high profile deals Kenny has done with Pat Gillick, and seeing that the Phillies need a 3B, I could see Crede being dealt to Philadelphia. As for Pierre, I wonder if LA would do a straight one for one deal: Pierre to St. Louis for Rolen? They both have $36M left on their deals, albeit Pierre has 4 years while Rolen has 3. Then the Cards could sign Morgan Ensberg to play 3B.
  25. I'm exhausted hearing about the Mitchell report, Prior and Roberts. Can I discuss another topic? I can't sleep at night thinking that two-fifths of the Cubs projected starting rotation for 2008 will come out of this pool of players: Dempster, Marquis, Marshall, Gallagher, Guzman and Samardjiza. How do we acquire a solid, right-handed #3 to fit in between Lilly and Hill? I've heard names like Greinke and Blanton could become available. What would it take to get them? Who else is out there?
