  1. I agree. How long you've been here has no bearing on my comments whatsoever. I would have written the same thing to a poster who's been here 5 minutes or 5 years. I, probably more than anybody here, have come up with some dud trade ideas in the last 5 years. But the feedback was always constructive. And there would always be a discussion or a counter-proposal. And we were able to build on others' ideas. And that's my point. You may not like my idea. I accept that. But suggesting that I could have substituted CC Sabathia's name for Vicente Padilla's name is just belittling for no reason. Totally unnecessary. They are 2 very different pitchers in 2 very different scenarios. You know it. I know it.
  2. In fairness to Levine, he was the first to highlight the interest in Lieber.
  3. And out an extra $3.5M. I'd rather put that towards taking a risk a position we have real holes at. 3.5 million isn't that big of a deal to us, when the payroll has been rumored to be as high as 135 million. And who can you get for 3.5 million that would fill a hole of ours? Todd Walker I think Big Z would have a huge problem if that guy was to be back in a Cubs uniform.
  4. I've been trying to come up with a Hundley for Karros/Grudzielanek change of scenery scenario trade for some of our current players ever since the offseason started. The idea here was that Texas seems like they'd like to get out from under Padilla's deal similar to the notion that the Cubs may want to get out from under Marquis' deal. Added a few players to better balance the salaries. I doubt Cleveland is looking to get rid of Sabathia. So, since my trade is so hilarious, what's your trade scenario to get rid of Marquis? Oh, I forgot, you're only here to criticize others or rubber stamp.
  5. Here's what Rosenthal wrote: "The signing of Lieber could signal a trade of right-hander Jason Marquis or the return of righty Ryan Dempster to the bullpen. Lieber will be in the Cubs' rotation, sources say; otherwise, he would have signed with another club." Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sure sounds like Lieber is not competing for a spot in the rotation, rather, he has been guaranteed a spot in the rotation. So, that must mean some transaction is in the works. By the way, Kerry Wood is probably thrilled with this. My recollection is that he, Jon and Tapani were very close.
  6. Good thought. Subtract Dempster from the deal and add in a prospect. Now Texas would be trading $24.75M in salary and taking back $17.05M. In quick math, the Cubs would be taking on an extra $3.85M each season.
  7. Sounds crazy I know. Ryan Dempster has $5.83M owed to him in 2008. Jason Marquis has $16.25M owed to him in 2008 and 2009. Neal Cotts has $800K owed to him in 2008. TOTAL CUBS OBLIGATION: $22.88M Vicente Padilla has $24.75M owed to him in 2008 and 2009. TOTAL RANGERS OBLIGATION: $24.75M Have the Rangers give the Cubs $1M in cash to make it even-steven and call it a day!
  8. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3197286 "...to look into whether former American League MVP Miguel Tejada lied to committee staffers when questioned in connection to the Rafael Palmeiro perjury case in 2005." Interesting...
  9. WiE, I don't know. On Pie, I suspect Hendry has a public stance ("we're not trading him") and a private stance ("we'll move him in the right deal"). I think there is concern about his hitting.
  10. I think I recall reading that any deal for Cabrera would require prospects. By the way, if the Cubs acquire Melky you got to figure he'll be the starting CF and the Cubs will package Pie for a pitcher.
  11. In day games in 2007, Cabrera posted a .364 OBP and .463 SLG.
  12. I'm going to defend Rosenthal on this one. While Hendry has been saying publicly he will not move Pie, it is quite possible that the Cubs have internally told baseball people around the league that they would be open to moving Pie for a quality starter in the right type of deal, and therefore would be in the market for a center fielder. This is not the first time Rosenthal has written an article hinting the Cubs may be in the market for a CF. They were linked to Cameron several times earlier in the offseason, and even Kenny Lofton's name has been brought up. Cabrera is only 23 and a switch hitter - he had a near 750 OPS against right-handed pitching in 2007. That is by no means great, but wouldn't be bad in the 8-hole or 2-hole. Hoops
  13. True, but we would have had an older, much less productive player that would have been signed for the next 4 years at over 6 million per year. I'd rather hope to replace the talent and get the player that's far more likely to improve the team. Do we know that he wouldn't have taken a 2 year $15M deal to come here?
  14. Yes, it's one day closer to being done or not being done. In other words, most of what was published or broadcast yesterday was nonsense. The Cubs would still like Roberts. They are not trading Hill, Pie or Colvin for him. As I said yesterday, they're willing to give up some combination of Gallagher-Marshall-Cedeno for him, and that's it. The names of Hill, Marmol, Pie and Colvin are what the Orioles would be asking for Bedard, and the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal. Mr. Miles, While you say "the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal," are you of the opinion that they should be pursuing him? Thanks, Hoops
  15. Maybe we should have just signed Luis Castillo to play 2B. At least he wouldn't have cost us any talent.
  16. I'm Hoops - please don't insult Mr. Miles by calling me Bruce. As for holes despite a large payroll, that's what happens when you pay the Jason Marquis' of the world $21M and the Stevie Eyres of the world $12M. That's $11M per year of payroll on below average performance.
  17. I'm not saying I'm right, but when I think about the subject of player upgrades, I think about it in terms of performance by position on the field, not batting order. I like Brian Roberts. And if you told me that acquiring him would mean that Mark DeRosa was shifting to SS, I'd be all over the deal. But everything we have heard to date suggests that the only thing a Roberts acquisition does is make DeRosa a "super-sub." That means Ryan Theriot is still starting at SS, and I (like many others here) have a huge problem with that coupled with Felix Pie starting in CF. Their OBPs suggest we will have near 3 automatic outs everytime through the line-up. That's unacceptable for a team spending $125M. Roberts may be better that DeRosa, but the difference is slight in my opinion. The real opportunity is to upgrade at SS and/or CF. The trade focus should be on those positions and a #2 starter.
  18. In regards to acquiring a SS, maybe the Indians trade for Roberts, and then trade either Peralta or Cabrera to the Cubs? What do you think the Indians would need to trade Peralta? From Ken Rosenthal: "The Cubs remain the most likely fit for Roberts. The Mets made a strong run at Bedard at the general managers' meetings in November. The Indians, who have explored trades for impact players all off-season, like both Roberts and Bedard."
  19. Based on the free agent list that player could be Emil Brown. Mainly plays corners, but played some CF earlier in his career. Could also be Jason Lane. He's younger than Brown, but any decent offensive stats from him seem to be directly correlated to playing at Minute Maid.
  20. Vance, That thought occured to me as well, but then something else hit me. Maybe Lou is not too enamored with using Marquis in the rotation.
  21. I still think one of those guys (Marquis or Dempster) will be dealt in Spring Training provided the rest of the rotation is healthy. I think there will be a team out there, who will suddenly need a starter for whatever reason, and will be able to accept a ~$5M salary. In Marquis' case, I think Hendry will need to send some cash to offset part of his $9M due in 2009. Hoops
  22. I would trust Lou to use him wisely.
