I was wondering, has anyone seen a study done on the effects on batting hitters 8 (in the NL, of course)? I'd assume there was a drop in slg and a rise in obp, but does anyone actually have some facts?

I don't remember the exact numbers or where I saw it, but I know I've seen a study looking at lineup protection that looked at this issue. I can't seem to find it now, but maybe with a little time it will come to me. (For the record, I seem to recall the study supporting your assumption. Though the effect wasn't very strong, it was stronger than the effect of having a really good hitter behind you.)

I also have read something of that sort. I think it was actually in a old Bill James baseball abstract circa 83 or something.

Some of the stuff I remember from it was that the person hitting behind you (except pitcher) has little effect on your performance.

I dont remember why I remember this but the 5th place hitter is the 2nd most likely guy on the team to lead off an inning.

Most important was it is better to get your best hitters the most ABs(top of the order) than it is to have a fast guy who isnt a good hitter at the top
