It's time to look forward.

I promised myself that I wouldn't watch any of the coverage of the celebration and I pretty much lived up to that yesterday. Last night though while I was at my mom's for dinner, the news was on and they were talking about the parade and celebration planned for today and some video of the fans celebrating. It looked like a lot of fun and I felt a pang of jealousy but a certain happiness crept in, mostly for my close relatives who are getting their first chance to celebrate their team's success.

 

One person in particular came to my mind, a true Cub-hating, die hard Sox fan; a cousin who died in September from cancer. He lived for the Sox, especially the last few months of his life. One of my sisters was at a neighborhood bar with his 2 brothers when the final out was made. She said they were so happy, for the first time in months. Even though she is a Cub fan, she said it was worth the Sox winning just to see the happiness it brought to them. After that it seemed like all the hate & jealousy I had for the Sox and their fans was stupid and childish.

 

I thought of when I was 9 and how I suffered through the Cubs collapse of 1969; or that when my dad was 9 it was 1945 and he never thought he was witnessing the last Cub pennant in his life.

 

I have a nephew, who is 9 years old and he jumped on the Sox bandwagon the last couple months. It bothered me a little but it was fun to see him so excited and talking about playing baseball, if it will get him away from the GameBoy and XBox, then why get mad about what team he cheers for? He's impressionable, if the Cubs somehow are in the Sox place next season, I may be seeing him wearing a Cubs hat and shirt.

 

So it pained me to see an interview with a man waiting outside a shop for Sox merchandise at 7 in the morning, two small babies in his arms. The first words out of his mouth were not about how great he felt about the Sox winning it but that it was not the Cubs.

 

You have Sox fans pleading with Cub fans to join the fun, "do it for Chicago," yet there are still a lot of Sox fans who want to rub it in our noses first and foremost.

 

Who wants to celebrate such a great accomplishment with such hatred and jealousy? Such a waste. Too many people in this city never got the chance to witness any baseball championship, celebrate the moment.

 

This is a great city, we don't need a sports championship to validate our standing in the world.

 

When the day arrives that we finally see the Cubs win the World Series, I just want to soak up that excitement and not worry about how a White Sox fan is feeling.

 

With that said, it's time for us to put this painful 2005 season behind us and look forward to a better 2006.
