Macias is the classic case of the organizational take on utility/bench players; the more years you have in the league, the better suited you are for the job. It is especially beneficial if you can switch-hit. The Cubs love that versatility. It doesn't matter what skills, or lack of, that you bring to the table. What's rather amazing is that Macias isn't too far off from the numbers he put up last season:

.268/.292/.376/.668, 2 dp, 4 bb in 198 PA

Projected 05:

.269/.285/.333/.618, 7 dp, 5 bb in 155 PA

He has actually managed to suck slightly more than he did last season. This is a remarkable achievement.

Baseball is weird. Only in baseball would someone as useless as Jose Macias last long enough to become a veteran. BP asked some good questions: "Do teams overstate the importance of late-inning defense, especially when compared to the cost of carrying a below-replacement level hitter for the season? Why is the ability to play six positions badly viewed as a skill?".

In a sensible world Macias would have been out of baseball a few years ago. It still blows my mind that Hendry paid 825K for him.

The value is in being able to make a double switch when you bring in a new pitcher. Dusty uses him as a pinch hitter and carries an extra pitcher.

Does anyone think Macias batted down 1 run, two out in the 8th last night because Dusty thought he could hit a HR after flying to the wall in St. Louis ? I couldn't believe he was sent to the plate with McClain, Murton, etc sitting on the bench.
