Pirates fired manager Lloyd McClendon; named bench coach Pete Mackanin interim manager for the rest of the season.

It's overdue for certain, but at least this qualifies as progress. The Pirates appeared to be leaning toward bringing McClendon back at midseason, but things have gone south since June and the club has currently lost nine of 10. It's not expected that Mackanin will keep the job into 2006. Sep. 6 - 3:35 pm et
